I really really miss 2nd old Ryze
The current iteration lacks the rapid succession of combos like the last one had and didn't have a trash ult that high-elo and pro players can actually utilize. The old ult was just glorious

His combo is still pretty fast. You just rush for the highest CDR possible and QWQEQEQ~ away anything that moves. Occasionally, you might want to EW for strong root or E->wait->EQ for AoE in teamfights however, but most of the time QWQEQ~ does the job.
Also, for fast comboing, E has higher leveling priority than Q. I typically start out by going 3 points in E and 1 point in Q and W, before upping Q to 3 points for higher base, and finish E first as the first attack spell to max.
I do agree that his ulti is a balance bane to him, though.
I absolutely hate his current E. The ability requires TOO much set up for it to be effective compared to old E. I really think that's where they need to start.

If you kill the target affected by E with your next hit, with any either Q or W or E, it will automatically spread upon death as well. It doesn't always need double E's to spread. Once you're over certain level of "fed'ness", clearing masses of minions become extremely satisfying: You just E a minion, and kill it with Q or any of your spells which the flux will spread to nearby minions, you E on the bunch of minions who have the flux and watch it spread like wildfire, before you skewer all of them with your second Q and watch a sea of gold flying up your screen.
Double E's is only needed in teamfights (IF you decide to go the AoE damage in fights) because unlike minions, champs typically don't die in 1 hit. But then again, once you max E first and capped the CDR, E should only have about 2 second CD anyway. And don't forget, casting W or E will also refresh Q. And so as I was saying, you just rotate QWQEQEQ~ and kill everything most of the time, and only reserve EWQ and E->wait->EQ for their intended special situations.
.......
Once you get around it, Ryze only has like 3 or so combo types in total; QWQEQE~ is the standard and can almost infinitely chain once you have enough CDR and mana (and ofc, a target).
The real hard part is using ulti properly. I still can not wrap my head around that.
honestly, in team fights Ryze's only actual useful combo is WEQ. You just cannot double E effectively in team fights. Old E was AoE that bounced within a certain radius which was far more effective than trying to double E someone, especially since Ryze is extremely short ranged.
The waiting/delay between rotation of spells is the reason why Ryze is in a terrible position. His old ult and passive made it to where you can reset multiple times. They nerfed the fuck out of it by creating a short ranged team teleport and removed spell vamp.
try minion dematerializer. if you throw the e right before the dematerializer kills the creep, it will spread. good way to get a surprise combo in.
The old Ryze where all your abilities were targeted. Oh man, that was so fun. Your E bounced off everything. Not to mention that it shredded your target's MR. Using any ability would reduce all of your cool downs. To top it off your ultimate gave you extra mana. Oh man, it was just so darned fun when you could 0-100 people and infinitely spam your abilities.
Q wasn't targetted and R isnt a targetted ability. Old Ryze you could miss Q but it would still benefit you by granting a stack but current Ryze you land Q or you lose the trade. No stack or anything (besides expending shield passive)
We're talking about the same Ryze here right? I'm talking about iteration 2 Ryze where his E could no longer bounce off himself.
I'm talking about s5 triple root Ryze
i'm pretty sure old new ryze had a whole lot of macro users. his combo was literally just infinitely alternating w and e, with q in between
