What would happen if there were no bans in Tournament play?

Kingsgrave··8 votes·1,340 views

Most of the bans used in competitive and tournament play seem to be targeted towards specialist picks in order to completely destroy a player, and if you added more bans it would only make the selection of usable characters dwindle.

What if instead of being able to ban players and teams would have to learn directly how to counter these characters and come up creative ways to fight them rather than just straight up ban them every time.

What do you think would happen?

I want the 5th game of a series to be blind pick like how they do it in OGN (I think?).

In terms of Worlds, what we would have seen would be this.

Top lane: Alistar vs either Maokai or Ryze Jungle: Lee Sin, Rengar or Kha'zix being in most every game Mid: possibly the most variation. Could make arguments for Zilean, Ryze, Orianna, Zed or a few others. ADC: It would be Lucian vs Tristana, Twitch or Corki Support: Thresh, Janna, maybe Alistar if the top laner is bored of playing him, Zilean

Could make the argument that having bans open up champion pools in a way because of the number of champions there are/were that it would more than likely be a mistake to let through. With the highest stakes, teams will pick whatever is most OP unless they have to go outside of the box.

The competitive play would become more fun, but people would not stop bitching.

The viable champ pool shrinks down to probably 10%. lol... Everyone mains an OP champ and calls it a day. Maybe then Riot will get the memo that their balancing has been atrocious? Maybe once upon a time, it's been good... But I started in March last year and all it's been is JUNK. I refuse to win a lot in ranked or even normals so I don't get forced to change my champ pool anymore. As it is, I can't play Veigar anymore due to kits like Orianna's. Fuck me, right? Fuck me for enjoying a champ this game has to offer. Fuck me for trying to use a champ in competitive play. Fuck me for "using the wrong champ". What the hell is that.

You sound like another qqer about fizz, trist or lucian some of the "OMFG SO OP QQQQQQQQQ" champs Quit whining. Riots balancing has been pretty great, maybe sometime you will realize how intricate buffs and bans are. A buff to janna= buff to yasuo= nerf to viegar You couldn't do any better

Haha you sound like another qqer about fizz or trist or luc

I'm so willing to wager I could do so much better than the autism squad we're dealt. You don't have to be perfect at the job. But you should be having more success than 10% viability, without a standard deviation % based ONLY because of bans being present. There's no excuse for that. It's blatant neglect or intentional funneling of viable champs to force people to play specific champs and cycle them so that skins are bought for those champs before cycling to another champion for competitive play.

I'll stop bitching when 40% of the champs are viable at competitive play. Seems fair, considering the high number of champions.

Yeah, I'm a QQer. I'm pretty pissed that I've been forced to shift my champ pool entirely because of viability issues. The only champ in the pool I once had that was viable was Jarvan. Miss Fortune, Annie, Urgot, Garen, Veigar, Xin, Mordekaiser and Hecarim are my other champs I so enjoyed to play, but thanks to meta, I just get shit on by those of equal or even slightly lesser skill value when I play my other favorite champs.

No bans just means theres less strategy involved. In a way bans also ensure a team doesn't win simply playing the "op" champions since the other team has an opportunity to remove that option. That being said, a blind pick game is how tie breakers are done in Korea so if you want to see a sample you can check that out.

Yes, but you have to actively learn how to fight those "op" champions rather than just being able to ban them. Imagine how many strange strategies could emerge if they were forced to deal with those champions!

DaCush7 votes

There wouldn't be any strange strategies. It would be everyone picking the same exact champs every game. They should increase the bans to make the champ pool selected be more diverse so pro players have to practice more than 2-3 champs.

If there were no bans, there might have been a pool of 30 champions at worlds.

Earl Eulrich2 votes

ou would see the same 10-15champs over and over, it would only go worse than it is now. We need more bans to see diversity finally, not less.

It would be the death of team composition. IE.. Insec would get LeeSin every time, and the only way a team would counter this is to pick him up first. Anyone playing SHR would simply pick him up first. Than the other team would take the other team's star champ.. it would be back and forth like this in every game. I think there would much less strategy involved, because players would just take their opponents best champs which would just force counters all across the board. I think you would see a lot more games with weird comps, like an adc Malzahar or mid lane Malphite.

Haha, imagine this happened on patch 4.6 Kassadin vs. Soraka in mid lane every. fucking. game.

Sounds boring as hell tbh.

It would be better for usitem 3083

blue side would pick alistar and red side would pick zilean+ryze in 90 pct of games.

edit: also might see rengar too in red side instead of ryze or zilean
