Another Idea for Ranked points. & My Experience/Thoughts (Long)
Okay so there are a lot of players who hate the ranked system and some who say, hey i climbed suck it up. Now I would like to point out a few things here. One being, the game is largely balanced around professional play. This means that if a less skillful player is getting rekt by a katarina, riot is less likely to take shots at her because she isn't flooding the competitive seen with the same results. This is fine. I ACCEPT this idea to an extent.
What I do not accept is the way they balance the ranked solo Q. It seems to me, you are either really good or really bad. The players who are diamond/masters/challenger, already know they are really good, can climb bronze to diamond no problem and that is 100% fine. However Players who are Bronze and even silver have a similar acceptance. They are bronze, they are silver.. and they know it because if they were diamond lvl they could climb. This leaves only Gold and Plat with the satisfaction of actually improving, at least in terms of rank.
I'm not saying that all bronze players are capable of being diamond, I'm saying their are bronze players who are capable of being gold. These players are held down by many reasons. AFKers, Feeders, what ever. I don't think the current system really lets the majority of its players feel good about the time and effort they put into the game.
I have a suggestion I would like to run past you guys. This idea comes from a game I use to play growing up called STARCRAFT. I played on a map called FMP, otherwise known as Fastest Map Possible. Their were 2 leagues made BY THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY. The rank system here was around 1v1 and 2v2s. The same principal applied, the higher your rank the better the players. Only they did thinks a lot different. I do not remember all the specifics but I can give you a really good idea of how it worked. Allow me to explain. There were 6 ranks: D C B A S K (D being bronze K being Challenger-ish) Each rank had 3 lvls, 1 2 and 3. So you could be D3 D2 D1 and once you hit a certain amount of points you would move up (just like league's ELO system)
Here is the catch. The lower your rank the more points you get for a win and the less points you lose. However, if you were a C1 Player and you lost to a D3 player, you would lose MORE points because you were favored to win .. because you were higher rank. This isn't as important for league if this system were to be implemented because WE do not pick our opponents in league.
In the StarCraft leagues, the points went something like this
D: 70-80w 10-30L C: 60-70w 25-35L B: 50-60w 35-40L A: 35-40w 55-65L S: 25-30w 65-85L K: 20-25w 75-100L
Like I said I dont remember the specifics but as you can see, the higher the rank the harder it is to climb, and the lower you are the easier it is. For StarCraft it wasn't black and white though, you could pick the players you wanted to play vs granted they accepted, and it could be an A rated player vs a C. Players who were at the S and K rank would actually play lower lvl players because playing eachother would result in a more or less 50% win, which is a loss of points for both of them. So they had to take a gamble and play vs B or A rated players in which they would get slightly less points, lose more points, but had a MUCH higher chance of winning because they are just that much better.
About me.. well I am 22 years old, I have played video games since I can remember, I played StarCraft 1 from 2006-2012, I was a crappy "bronze" player who got better at the game and got as high as A1, which is a huge improvement. I then played StarCraft 2 for only a few months in which I got Top Diamond in the first month of the game, largely due to my experience on the original. I played Dota 2 for a year and got 3400MMR (nothing to brag) before I started playing League of Legends. In all my experience, the longer I played the game the higher ranking I achieved, I started playing LoL in July Season 4 and placed Silver 5 and moved up to Silver 1 by the end of preseason. I started Season 5 Silver 2 and have fallen all the way to Silver 5. Now I'm no Diamond player by any means, I am probably not even a plat lvl, who knows. But the fact that I am nearing Bronze 1 with 0LP after almost a full year of playing this game really bothers me. I have felt and seen improvement in my own game play. And yet this rank system tells me I'm just as bad as i was 2500 games ago when i first started at lvl 1.
TL;DR: Riot, please make the rank system more enjoyable for your playerbase, you have the balancing for the pros.. let us have a more rewarding rank system.
