I quit this game roughly a year ago

And over the past month or so, I’ve slowly come back playing mostly ARAMS with the occasional normal on LAN and NA servers. At the time, I quit because I felt like the game was at a place where I simply wasn’t having fun anymore. I cited several reasons, most of which I barely remember at this point. I bring this up because for the first time in a year, i played a few ranked games last night on my smurf (check ChoGathsSon).

And after only two games, I was remindef of why I quit. And two massive things stuck out to me and for whatever reason, seemed more clear than ever. Those reasons were:

  1. Top lane (and laners in general) still have no avenue to control their own lane. In my first game, I was ganked twice and received no help whatsoever. I still outfarmed my opponent hardcore but our mid lander fed and their jungles steam rolled whereas ours would often dive in and die in exchange for insignificant kills. My second game I got ahead on Gnar early with a solo kill and a 1 for 1 when I was ganked. But then Kayn did Kayn things and proceeded to gank me at tower four times in a row after that. My lane and my game pretty much over.

  2. Playing alone sucks. I hate playing by myself, but I did because I was bored and the only close friend I have that still continues to play this game with me was out of town (we normally just spam ARAMS).

As I went into detail for the first point, I want to make it clear that I am not flaming my team or blaming them for my loss. I am not even mad about losing because I realize that the MMR my accounts hold is still probably higher than my current skill and if I was in any decent shape, despite the setbacks, I probably would’ve just carried. Maybe not, who knows. That really isn’t the point.

The point is that it still holds true today: jungle has way too much influence in this game. And with solo lanes and lane phase in general ending so quickly, the jungler seems even more influential now than ever. And I hate that. I enjoy team fights, I enjoy general macro play. But lane phase, to me, is where mechanics and strategy shine the most. Individual outplay feels strongest here. Though it is a team game, this is where a player can build up their power and carry if needed. And that potential just seems totally gone because all any lamer has to do is sit back and wait for the jungler to dive you under tower repeatedly if you’re shoved in and if you try to apply any pressure, lord help you. Not to mention, junglers have extreme mobility on top of about 50 million different ways to ignore tower aggro now, so that’s pretty frustrating, too. The point is, lane phase sucks and I still feel like the team with the better jungler wins.

To elaborate on point number two now. I never really enjoyed playing this game by myself (but at least the game was still fun in s2/3/4 when I did). And honestly, flex queue is a wash and duoing isn’t fun because you always get bad players on your team to compensate for your duo so more times than my, as a duo, you HAVE to carry. I miss ranked 5s queue where you several friends could build a team and play a real, strategically dedicated game together. Even though we had no hopes of accomplishing anything, those were always my favorite games. And that fact that all of my friends have quit and moved onto other games because they have their own issues with league, it makes it feel like I more or less just wasted my time last night because i came away still feeling sour about this game.

I really feel like my decision to quit taking this game seriously last year was resolidifed last night. I just didn’t enjoy it at all. While I admit two games is a bad sample size and I would need to play more to get a better feeling, I was just so offput by this experience that I’m not sure I’m even willing to do that now. I hate to be so negative too but the game honestly sucks and everything that I ever enjoyed about this game is more or less dead. I’m not sure why I even bothered making a post about this. Let’s just say it was to complain about jungler again. At least that could justify it somewhat I guess.

Personally I think it's fine to comment on the state of the game as a whole and say that there are systemic things that need to be adjusted. Right now, front loaded damage is too strong and it's too difficult to trade at all without a trade turning into an all in because people's runes (especially early) give them kill pressure from 85-90% HP.

There's a problem in my eyes though when you take particular circumstances from your game out of context and then make comments like "laners in general have no avenue to control their lane".

In your first game as Jax, you're starting a shove toward Mundo that should bounce back to you once it reaches turret. Before then, you see Graves at 5:15. You back off. Then, despite the fact that you JUST SAW graves on your ward, you initiate an all in against Mundo and Graves doubles back to finish you off. Then you come to the boards and profess that junglers have too much impact on the game...despite the fact that you knew he was there and just won't mention it in your post.

But that's not the end. Because at 5:42 Mundo has literally 46 HP, you have about 200 and literally no way to escape graves. If you auto mundo, you go 1 for 1 100%. Rather than just auto him (you're right next to him), you just leave him and start running toward the top brush with 2-3 autos worth of HP left, die, and Mundo lives with sub 100 HP.

There are plenty of things wrong with the game right now, but to pretend that the mistakes you make all belong to systemic issues with the game is part of the reason you're having trouble.

Im glad you mention this because I pointed out in my post that I am not absent of blame or misplay myself, though I did not make that implication that it had anything to do with my frustrations with the game and that may have been disengenious. I agree, the Jax game is a bad example, but my frustration was more to do with the Nasus game. And as I stated, two games is still an incredibly tiny sample size so to say that this experience is somehow loaded with games to back up t claims would be false. However, I do watch streams and it is still rampant. And it was true last year when I quit. Junglers do not have much to farm and often rimes, ganking non stop is the correct play. Given how much damage they do on top of that, it’s not usually hard to execute a gank - especially in top lane. This was my frustration then and a year ago, I believe it was more than justified. Two games in now, maybe not so much but I admit it certainly demoralized me to attempt to continue to play any further and determine whether that’s true or not.

I'd say your larger point is probably true. In my opinion, I think there is too little risk in constantly ganking. If you fail a gank, or two, and the enemy laner is continually jungling, you'll be marginally behind, but you'll still probably have made a positive impact on the lanes such that there was never really any risk in failing to even burn a summoner.

The bigger issue that you sort of alluded to is damage, and that's something they're addressing not only in the next patch but in the coming pre-season. Personally, I still enjoy the game enough given that I'm able to do well enough in roles that don't play well in this meta (I reached Gold just playing Karthus in an assassin/electrocute meta and can probably still reach plat with him).

It's frustrating trying to out play and work around the things that need to be adjusted, but it can be somewhat tilting sometimes.

Right. If I was half as good as I was at my best, I would’ve probably made much better decisions and simply played better mechanically to win those games. However, losing honestly isn’t a frustrating point for me anymore because I’ll always look at any game as something I could’ve played better in. My experience matters more, win or lose. And as I addressed in another comment, I just don’t have faith that things will get better.

Here's to hoping preseason fixes this clusterfuck of a season.

Been hearing that for almost 7 years now. Seriously doubt anything worthwhile is going to change.

Games will still be snowbally as hell and end at 25 minutes with no comeback potential at all

Junglers will still decide the game

Damage will still be out of control and riots solution is so buff tanks, which isn’t the problem. Damage keystones do too much, durability items give too little and tanks inherently still do too much damage themselves. All it will be is tanks one-shotting everything like they do each season they get buffed, then they’ll get nerfed into the ground and the remainder of the season will be small different meta shifts of mages, bruisers and ADCs.

More people will quit and any friends that you may have aren’t going to magically be incentivized to come back

If anything I think Nexus Blitz is Riot's way of solving the snowball problem. If they create a game mode that's tailored for fast games (as in faster than ARAM with a full poke comp), they could in theory extend game time on SR back to 30+ minutes (like it was in every season before season 6) and make Blitz the "I wanna play a quick game of League in a PC bang" mode.

It's funny how many people said Riot would fix League by the time preseason ended. The entire season felt like one long preseason considering how many time Riot kept making large changes to the game.

I appreciate the offer and may take you up on that one day, so long as you’re okay with spamming ARAMS :p.

don't waste your time here - the game still sucks. I'm only playing one for all right now because it's such a clusterfuck that it's hard to care about balance. Yeah Talon can still one shot you with extreme ease, but look at all those heimer turrets! LOL!

One for All Skarner v Skarner is the funniest thing in the world. You just chain impale people back to your fountain LOL

seeing ~15 heimer turrets underneath a tower, all firing at one turret, was the funniest thing I'd seen in a while in leage.

the tank changes arent going to make a tank meta. the runes are the issue, too much free damage in game. and tanks have no runes to make them a threat in laning phase. its gotten to the point were im taking conqueror on maokai and going an ad bruiser build cuz ill tank just as much and still be a threat cuz when i go full tank i do no damage and have no threat to do anything in fights damage wise. i was in a game earlier today as full tank maokai. full armor and hp build had over 1800 true damage dealt to me from a yasou and only 400 physical damage. it seems 80% of his damage was true damage ignoring any armor or damage reduction i had as a tank. should i win the fight and kill him 1 vs 1 no im not saying that. should i have all my gold i spend be completely negated by conqueror + IE true damage with his bonus armor pen ? and its not about yasou. its just the state of the game. damage and mobility is just crazy. its not fun anymore and i just play cuz im bored at home with nothing else to do.

I keep telling people jungle is a ridiculously influential role but nobody takes it seriously.

Kinda upsetting when Graves/Xin/Kindred style on you over and over and fucking over again.
