You are completely wrong. I know plenty of silvers with great mechanical skill, but I only started climbing once I started learning the game. You literally don't know how little you know.

and i know plenty of silver player who have shit mechanical skills but know an absurd amount about the game...

these things arn't "mutually exclusive"

the difference is.. if have HAVE great mechanical skill they can LEARN the game... you cant LEARN mechanical skill past a certain point, that is a limitation of the human body.

if your on the correct champion sure. but some player like myself like the champs they main.. and regardless of how strong they are and what is meta they are going to play their favorite champions.

i played nidalee in season 7 when she had a 38% winrate. i didnt play her RANKED, because they would be suicide, but i played her, AND i made her work. i dont give a crap about what is meta. what is OP that only determines what i ban, not what i play. if i get a good game idc if i win or lose it's a GAME its ABOUT having fun.

sure if i wanted to play different champs i wouldnt be "Stuck" in silver. if i wanted to quit my job and league league all day i wouldnt be "stuck" in silver.

but i choose not to, because i have a family. and i play the games i have the most fun with. im not going to following the meta in order to "climb" im not so obsessed with climbing that i need to pick up a new champ that is OP every damn patch.

if i am going to climb i am going to do it with the champs i love. having FUN. not being a slave to the meta's new "OP" champs.

and so i laugh a people who think they are better than me because they choose to pick the OP picks to "climb" because they think thier "higher rank" means anything. if you cant beat me on equal gold in a 1v1.. when your champ counters mine. i dont give a fuck if your in LCS.

As a support main who peaked D1 last season with multiple smurfs accounts I can say you can carry from support. Also, I have seen people with one hand hit challenger if someone understands the game at the most fundamentals of levels I don't care what mechanics they have give them Annie and they can get to d5. Now if you want to blame ping then look to the pro player Matt who got to challenger on 200 ping. The list goes on and on if you are really going to tell me your mechanics hold you back then i would rethink who is the delusional one. Also you have more than a game a day so far this season that is plenty to climb. Don't try to say time is what matters. Rektful (Hearthstone pro who doesn't have mechanics) got to gold in less than hundred games.

P.S. if you are going to tell me you have no mechanics then stop playing Nidalee. You cant play her. Try Warwick/ Volibear/Amumu/Zac and watch some LS you could learn a thing or two about climbing.

Based on my observation (right now im going through silver on my another account "verysalt" (West) i can tell that silver have terrible game knowledge, of which big part is Macro play. Things like overstaying, chasing kills, not prioritizing objectives, poor team fight locations. In fact elo hell players don't even think about choosing place to fight, they starts fights completely randomly. It's obvious that most of them being held by game knowledge and lack of understanding of interaction between their champs and their team or opponents.

By no means silver ever would have better game knowledge than platinum, if that would be the case then only lame, physically disabled person who physically can't micro his champ would not be able to get to platinum.

Dude, I am carrying myself out, since Silver 3 so far I haven't lost a single game. Right now I am 1 game away from Gold promos. And I play ONLY support with lowest cs score in my team every single game.

About Taric. It's a hard carry support when played right, but he can't carry on his own. Taric requires great team cohesion which you will not find even in Gold. He is very strong but very niche.

one of the smartest players i know is bronze 1, his game knowledge is as good as any coach/analyst review I've ever heard. why is he bronze? he has no fingers on his left hand. Ranked level =/= game knowledge and my friend is a perfect example of that.

sKz Aaron D2 votes

That is the most extreme example I've ever heard. That is not the case for the rest of the 67% of players in bronze and silver.

I mean, I climbed out of my silver placements to mid-gold as a support main playing my 3rd best role in Season 6 in about a week and a half. I think it took about 20 games. And I did it from a college dorm room where my ping was 40 higher than I was used to, with a lot of packet loss and ping spikes.

I think that if someone is stuck in silver it's almost always due to a lack of game knowledge, mechanical ability, macro sense, or some combination of all three. It's unreasonable to say that half of the people in silver would be able to climb out if they just played a little more often. There's a lot to learn. There's no shame in being in silver or bronze, but there is in refusing to learn.

The Sword Saint3 votes

Yes it's because of game knowledge, and the mental ability to act on that knowledge. Plenty of people get to challenger with average mechanics using only their map awareness, macro play, shot calling, etc. Hell, just being able to control your frustrating and not bloodlust after kills or tilt and make dumb decisions despite knowing it's the wrong move should be enough to get you decently high elo.

AlienPrimate1 votes

Except I have had a multitude of people spam ping when I build tear on Taric who then ask me "how is your attack speed so fast?" It is absurd that people think they can tell me what to build when they don't even know what my passive does.

sKz Aaron D1 votes

Exactly. I'm only Gold 1 and I taught a group of bronze and silver players for a couple of months last season, the one that actually applied what I taught climbed from Bronze 3 with a 33% win rate to Silver 4 with 49%.

I taught him how to play Amumu. I'd probably played like 2 games of Amumu to his 50, but the comparative skill was enough for me to get him to climb 4 ranks with that champion by the time preseason was over.

Quiet Dude5 votes

If you play against a champion enough, you can learn a great deal about them without ever having played one. I played with a Jayce once who insisted he stay in hammer form and not poke the enemy team, he'd only save his cannon form to execute. But I've played against enough Jayce's to know he's all about whittling people down and then using hammer form to finish them off or CC and then swap back into cannon. But the Jayce on my team insisted I was wrong, because he was a "one trick."

I guarantee without ever having played Jayce, I'd play better than the guy on my team based on my observations and past experience. Don't be so arrogant.

Higher elo players can help you play this game as this champ. They probably have played against this champ just as much or more often than you have played this champ, allowing them to see the weaknesses of that champ you're maining.

I mean, what matters is if they're actually right, regardless of their elo.

Theres people who main stuff for ages but have never strayed in their build or playstyle, and what they just happened to do in their earliest days of playing the champ is probably not optimal play.

For example, I encountered a cait main recently who rushed BT and runanns because despite being a 'main', they really haven't followed any outside sources or updates to the champ, they just like her and how she plays. I'm fairly sure most people would agree that IE is definitely a better rush than BT these days (unlike a number of seasons ago), and furthermore since the change to her passive cait is probably much better off with shiv/rfc more so than runanns. I am not a cait main (and although I've got a diamond border, I stop at d5 so don't really consider myself 'high' elo), but I'd still give such a cait main advice on how they should play.

Now if you've got solid results with something and you can back up your playstyle/build and/or have experience with what they're proposing and know it doesn't work so well, that's all well and good, but I wouldn't say that maining something inherently makes you an authority on how to best play the champion.

this is true; when i made this thread, i wasn't really considering item builds, but good very point.

and the end elo donest matter what matters is who is correct. and yeah im sure there are cases when somone calls themself a "main" of a champion in lower elo and they dont know jack shit about it and some higher elo person who hasn't played the champ before still knows more about the kit.

i mean just yesterday i had to explain to my freind who was being my ADC as jihn that his Q donest get stronger unless it kills a minion.. he thought it was with each bounce regardless.. now i dont play jihn, i own him sure, but as i cant play adc to save my life. i just buy them so so i can swap with ym freinds i think he was lvl 6 on jihn.. granted we are both silver.

but he literall was like.. dude no.. let my READ YOU THE SILL DESCRIPTION... then he did and was like ... "OH.. wow you're right.."

so yeah

Mysticman892 votes

I figure the only criteria to being a main of something is to mainly play it, without having a skill or knowledge minimum.

It's interesting to note that the player with the highest mastery points for any given champ tends to actually be relatively low ranked (in the top 20 for individual champ mastery points, only 5 of them are plat+, and one is even bronze 5 and consistently runs heal/barrier twitch).

It's harder to succinctly describe play styles compared to builds, but those can sometimes be clearly wrong to non-mains too (say, ultra passive Draven players are probably doing it wrong...).

Colgate Gator2 votes

I don't know, high Elo players have a lot under their belt, which also translates to knowledge about Champions.

Meanwhile, your so called "Main" hasn't got you out of Silver 5, and you're unwilling to accept that maybe there's something wrong on your side.

Depends on what it was they said really I mean if you are playing a champ and doing bad against your lane and i say something like "build a hexdrinker" when they mainly deal magic damage and i see you still building damage and keep dying I'd say that be fine. Never really had anyone literally tell me how to play them other than maybe something like "peel for the adc". Which I still wouldn't consider telling someone how to play their champion so i'm curious what this supposedly high elo player said to you and who your "main" is

Even then though while there's plenty of champs I don't play i've played almost every champion at least once with the exception of 4 or so and even if I don't play a champ I've seen enough of all of them to know what they can/ can't do relatively speaking and the difference between a good/ bad player playing said champion.

I'll use an exmaple of myself that happened maybe 2-3 weeks ago although it happens often enough to me where people try telling me how to play/ build my main which is currently alistar. Thing is I take predator often on him and its pretty much every other game I get someone on my team spamming I have predator on alistar, or someone tells me they like it so i get both good and bad reactions to it all the time literally soon as the match starts.

Anyways weeks ago this syndra mid tried calling me boosted I was playing alistar support with predator literally as soon as the game started, I then preceded to go something like 10/3/18 and carried the game meanwhile the syndra went something like 3/10/5 and the only kills the syndra got were literally kills I handed to here, those aren't actual scores since I don't remember exactly but it really was something like that. I get S reguarly on alistar

Now when I take predator and do badly for whatever reason although generally that means the whole team is doing badly since if it's just my adc or whatever I can still make plays for someone else. However I build a rylai alot of times on alistar too and in said games when my score is bad i get told i shouldn't of tried building damage on alistar, although the reason I build rylai/ take predator isn't for the damage rylai gives health so it does help me tank to an extent and the slow from rylai is really good for peeling/ letting my team secure kills since it allows us to chase people trying to run away much easier afterall when you are basically perma slowed you probably won't get out alive. I've been building rylai on alistar since even before his rework and honestly I think it was a bit better then because his old passive aoe proced the slow and was easier to keep up at all times compared to his new e aoe.

So i literally have people try telling me how to build alistar semi-reguarly but I don't believe I've actually had anyone try telling me how to literally play him since I do his combos well.

well i dont use reddit, but yeah any player who thinks they are better than you because they are "higher elo" is full of themselves.

if your BETTER than me.. you proe it by example... not my talking shit.

you think you can play my main better than me.. ok then ill go support we can que together next game and u can SHOW me. then when your bullshit thoery donest work becuase it was ludicrous to begin with we can have an educated discussion about you telling someone who to play a champ they have never played before.

you want to know the last thing i said to a higher elo player (sysbot) who streams nidalee when i saw his runepage, and i suggested he try a different one

i told him to the new rune-page for nidalee. he tried it ONE game as was like "holy shit this is ABSURDLY better than what i was using, Thanks dude"

you know what? he also plays nidalee.. he is DAMN good at nidalee. and yet some random silver player (aka ME) showed him a better way.

thats what ACTUAL high elo players do, they dont shit talk other people.. they take new info.. take into into account. and that use that info to climb even further, he listen to my reason and thought he would give it a try... then realizing i was correct.. thanked me for it and as far as i know he is still using the same runepage for nidalee i showed him to this day.

From my observation from playing and watching a lot of games with players of varied skill levels, the thing that separates high level players from low level players 99 times out of 100 is macro play and general game knowledge. That’s not to say that there aren’t low knowledge high elo players banking on mechanics but it’s rarer.

You could be decent or pretty good mechanically speaking but if you make stupid decisions constantly you probably won’t make it out of silver.

As for playing a champion, I think a distinction needs to be made between playing the champ well in game and knowing the ins and outs of a champion.

For example, if a random high level player and a low level one trick play mirror match up in blind pick, chances are that the high level player is going to win through a mix of good mechanics and vastly superior general game knowledge, but that does not mean that he will know more about champ matchups/counters, builds, more complex combo interactions, item builds/runes and their interactions with said champions, those things I would trust even a low level one trick to know more about in most cases.

because yeah Steven hawking is a hell of a lot smarter, but he doesn't know the ins and out's of THIS particular field as much as said first year med student

I am a better Trynd player than almost every Tryndamere main in silver and bronze. I don't play him.

Macro play and overall game knowledge, plus almost certainly better mechanical skill as well means you can probably learn something from the person 10 ranks higher than you who doesn't play your champion.
