PSA: Playing like a carry when you're support against a support main will wreck your lane.

You figure, "Ill just que up in support for a fast que, build (insert mage here) full AP and carry! YEAH!"

Maybe.

Probably what will happen is an average support main, and average jungler will stomp on you and shake you like a bag of free money.

What some people dont get is that the "off meta" stuff that is used in bot lane that works, is stuff used by support mains cause they know how the lane works. Not some flavor of the month kiddie that hops onto a champ and fires up support primary as their que. The basis of successful off meta supporting is STILL supporting.

I consider myself primarily a support main, and have expressed my sympathies to many an enemy team about their "support" several times. Lux, Brand supports tend to be the worst offenders because people just think its some secret OP ez mode stuff. First, any ADC thats seen it a couple times often ceases to be troubled by Brand support. Second, a support main often isnt troubled by it at all. Third, if you dont build a sight stone, ESPECIALLY in this meta where everyone and their dog is trying to shit on bot lane... you will suffer for it. Also any jg that has seen it before will be double trying to shit on bot lane to shut down TWO CARRIES in one lane. This will be very effective because the full AP no vision support mage wont have any significant utility to fall back on. To get the most out of their kit they will have to be near the front line trying to do damage... damage they wont have cause they shared gold with a marksman and possible got shut down from no vision.

I get that many people find support boring, but some of you need to decide if you find supporting or losing more boring. Going to the bot lane without knowing it as well as a support main just means youre gambling your hopes on a gimmick to get you through... and that gimmick only really works if you both know your champion well, and how to support.

Best advice, wait the extra minute for the mid lane queue time, and hope you get a real support to increase your chances dramatically in that lane.

TL;DR: Off meta supporting is still supporting, learn to support or youre a burden to the lane and will probably get stomped by a real support.

Dude you are wrong Kalista is a top tier support she has infinite dashes so she can peel for her Zyra while staying safe, her e is a slow and free smite at once and she provides free vision with her w. If you now count her ultimate you got a the best support you can think of. Sadly Riot gutted her cause she was a pick-ban support in competitive play. Now all we got is the typical Caitlyn putting her traps everywhere so her carry can hit the skillshots once somebody steps on it.

Ok, that was kind of funny.

As somebody who use to main Jungle/Sup. I can tell you I now main Jungle/Top. Because the 'support' mages are not off meta; rather they are completely out of control. I will go back to bot lane when Ziggs, Brand, Malz, Zyra, Annie, etc are gone. Actually it's the only reason I hate autofill. Because of 'support' mages.

Well based on win % Zyra is the only mage that is played more as support than as a mid laner. Even then her build statistics prove out my point more. The first item built on her is item 2301 . Successful support Zyra is SUPPORTING, while also offering CC and damage. I see a LOT of people picking Zyra and placing zero wards. Those people arnt supporting.

Sona is winning more games than her at the moment though.

You largely missed my point somehow, I think you assumed a lot from the TLDR part.

I said that off meta stuff working is because of support mains doing it. A support main would build item 2301 on Zyra . A person who doesnt understand bot lane wouldnt and would go full AP and lose to the player who understands how to support, while still playing as a mage.

So somebody who mains support will beat somebody who doesn't? You don'tsay...

Weasel Kensei2 votes

Ah but I do say.

What Im trying to help a few people understand is that they cant just take a mage bot lane and faceroll just because. There are people that dont understand that a support main will beat them bot lane. They think theyre hot shit and have killer mid laner skills, they dont realize it doesnt all translate to a 2v2 lane though.

They often do it "to win" and never play support properly, or ever will. Im trying to spare them, and their team, the harsh fact that for it to work well, they must first be able to support properly before they can understand how to really get it to work. If those players took the time to learn supporting, they would see the lane differently and would probably then see why picking a traditional support has a lot of advantages.

Because they refuse to look at the lane in a purely supportive fashion, or the match and their team in a supportive fashion. They will never see as much success going mage support in an attempt to be an AP carry in the support position as a real support main on the same champ. People dont get it, and Im trying to help them understand that full AP Lux with ignite players will win fewer games doing that than a Lux with Sightstone and exhaust. Assuming similar skill levels and not someone smurfing to rofl stomp on Bronze ADCs.

Me and a friend mained bot lane back in S5 (Not sure how well this would work now), and were at one point familiar enough with the roles required of us (I would not say I am anymore), to pull off a Diana/Sion bot lane. We stomped the enemy laners (then their team), who apparently did not normally play the roles. So yes, your point, in my experience, is incredibly valid.

Well, I wouldn't call it off meta because currently the best supports are Malzahar, Zyra, and Karma.

Weasel Kensei3 votes

Karma is certainly not off meta support. The Karma we have now has been more popular on support historically. She sees play in other lanes because she can be pretty flexible, but shes not some flavor of the month support by any means. There was no reason to make a list of non traditional supports and include Karma in it.

Malzahar like some other odd champs can work as support because he can be pretty cheesey with his passive and his extreamly reliable/lethal CC with his ultimate. In all honesty, having a Malzahar is like having a Warwick or Vi in your lane, but with a ranged aa, that can just point and click CC/chunk your target. Its about as reliable as an Annie stun, and Malz doesnt have a big red indicator that hes about to flash supprise buttsecks you so the jg can come and gank. Again, this is best played by a support main who understands what theyre doing with it instead of some kill stealing kiddie who couldnt wait for the midlane que time.

Zyra gets by more than she used to with the addition of Thunderlords. After her rework she got an even better botlane also. Her E can initiate, peel, poke. Her Q by itself is ok for poking, but with the pets proc also its also a strong poke/zone tool. Her ultimate is also a strong peel, initiation, zoning tool. She has enough tools at her disposal to fall back on some utility when behind. Its why she works. Zyra being played by a support player in a supporting fashion is a support.

i dont know about that buddy. I hope onto brand/zyra support with ignite and destroy lane. normals supps get fkd by non meta picks if they dont respect them

Depends like Support mains should know the whole champion roster at least , I pretty much know every champs kits and power spikes how they play and off meta picks are something i can expect. Like fiddles bot lane i never see yet i know how to deal with it with an actual support. Nid support i fought a long long time ago i knew how to deal with and stomped lane and won. Gragas support i fought a few times i know how to deal with it by hand. Brand /Zyra they may be freelo to people who dont respect them but to people WHO actually know how to fight them they end up free G and wins (assuming they dont throw) Even ziggs bot is nothing new to me since i played him support and had fun.

my favorite lane is Zyra Heimerdinger doh :D what are these ganks we speak off

Weasel Kensei1 votes

Zyra and Heimer would be a pain to get in on.

Reminds me of my occasional Teemo supporting I tried out just to amuse myself.

While he isnt good at peel, the blind blocks all damage from the enemy ADC, followed up with exhaust cuts their damage down. By this time Iv poked them with repeated AAs so they back off. The golden ticked on that guy though is shrooms used as free wards in the bush, and blocking off the enemy jg approach. At a certain point the enemy laners just know not to chase the ADC because they will get kited to hell and back from the shrooms. The only thing that keeps it from working well is the gold reliance for items and levels to increase Q and R effectiveness.

Meh... usually I lose to a team with someone just queing up "support" only so they can carry because any advantage I get is punished by the enemy team having a party bot lane.

Then again im a mage main who plays botlane alot Q_Q.. so i would play Velkoz Brand support. i just enjoy supports with shields/heals

Legacy Hydralpha1 votes

I'm in the same boat as you. I love Vel'Koz a lot and I've played him support a few times, but I prefer utility in the game over anything so I take Bard pretty much all the time.
