An Analysis on Why Yasuo is Hated

HalcyonDweller··62 votes·7,422 views

I'm going to analyze why Yasuo has such a stigma surrounding him within League's community. I'm not going to advocate for or against nerfs. This is just to discuss why certain things are or are not problems.

First lets talk about his kit:

I want to propose that what makes him powerful and what makes him un-fun to play against are separate things. Him being powerful does make him more frustrating, but not any more than any other character being powerful would make them frustrating.

Yasuo has an overloaded kit. He has two passives, and two abilities that are spamable. Now this isn't inherently the problem, as there are other champions with overloaded kits that are not as widely hated. But it does contribute to people's frustrations with him.

I think that the most frustrating thing about Yasuo is that his Wind Wall takes agency away from enemies; there is something inherently frustrating about being negated that is so different from simply being out-played. Instead of playing around the opposing ultimate, it erases it and takes away the 'cool moment' that player could have had by using their ultimate. On top of that it isn't at nearly as much of a cost to him as it can be to them. A number of ultimate abilities with much longer cooldowns than Wind Wall are projectiles that can be unmade by it.

His dash used to be a big problem, such as it's stacking damage allowing Yasuo to lvl 1 cheese his opponents, but that has been nerfed. It takes practice for Yasuo to learn how to get the most out of using his dashes, just as it takes practice to learn how to predict and play around it. That said, it is still very frustrating to play against if you can't predict it and end up missing all of your skillshots. The fact that this skill requires practice to learn how to predict may be part of the reason he is so much more of a problem in lower levels of ranked play, because those of us that are in that level of play may not have as much time to practice or learn how to play around it.

Now on to behavior and expectations:

I propose that Yasuo has a higher skill floor than people expect. Everybody has at some point seen a godlike Yasuo player dominating a game. IT doesn't look hard, and he's got a lot of up-front power that we expect should help him stomp games. I think that leads to people just starting out with him to expect to do well (obviously this is a mistake, but it is one that a lot of people make nonetheless). What results is a situation where the player can do poorly -> not understand why -> start looking for other reasons for the game going poorly. This isn't a problem that is unique to Yasuo, it is prevalent throughout this game and makes up a majority of the toxicity we see in game.

The other reason I think Yasuo is so hated in this community is actually confirmation bias. We are more likely to remember negative experiences than neutral ones. It used to be a survival trait from humanity's early days, something we did so that we wouldn't eat poisonous plants or go near dangerous animals a second time. After many many Yasuo games, even if they are equal parts good and bad, we are more likely to remember the toxic, selfish and childish players than the mature ones who did their job and played carefully.

I think that the combination of his kit's expected power, the frustrating parts of his kit, and common toxicity and confirmation bias cause a larger than average amount of hatred for the champion and his playerbase in this community.

"agency" is the key word word. Just like when you flash LeeSin Q and then he just ward hops on you and kills you anyway. As long as they make use of their kit properly, you never had a chance to begin with. The feeling of futility against champs like Yasuo who can take your agency away from you is more than a little frustrating. Not to say other champs can't do the same thing, but with most champs these "windows of power" are much smaller and are much clearer. what makes yasuo so damn unfun to play against is that he always has options(provided by his kit), since like OP said he has little to no cooldowns, no resource, and passive shield/windwall to top it all off. The fact of how he is the only champ in the game that has almost zero scaling from normal to URF mode is a testament to this. Yauso is also a "couter pick" champ, not a "counterplay" champ. What i mean by that is outside of the yasuo players, the match up is very much determined by who you are playing against him. He completely removes any chance of wining lane from certain champs(skill shot projectile based champs) while getting completely Dumpstered by non projectile champs. Either way it's not fun for the player against yas. Either you destroy him cuase you picked Annie or dred your entire existence because you picked Syndra

It's not really a champ matchup, though Annie does hard counter him.

It's more often a skill matchup, based on whether or not Yas is skilled enough to beat you.

You can have the skill to beat a bad or average Yas, but all skilled Yas's will have the power to beat you, and knowing that kinda makes everything you do seem useless.

If what you're saying is true then the top 10 challenger spots in every region would be dominated by Yasuo players. That's not the case, in fact they're largely dominated by ADC/Mage players, the demographic that Yasuo counters the most.

Exactly. People saying there is no counterplay to a good yasuo are typically spewing nonsense, if that was true, there is zero reason why top tier players aren't one tricking or maiming yasuo.

he is a little too strong in the early game to be honest. his shield makes it impossible to trade with an equally skilled yasuo. also he can simply when he lands an auto so he doesn't get outtraded. Q auto E away. you lose a trade and the only thing your auto did was poke off his shield. get shield back rinse and repeat. its very annoying.

If syndra stuns him he ll die before he gets to windwall

Q goes over wall W goes over wall

I really dont see a problem

Now there are dumb matchups like velkoz

Pretty sure one of the reasons why velkoz aa is the way it is because windwall blocks everything except his ulti

But then again if you hit e on yasuo he is death

We see the point but examples are bad

WinTheWarOnPants9 votes

He will most certainly not die before the stun wears off unless the syndra is godlike fed or he's already super low. Even if he would item 3140 will make him essentially unkillable to syndra. Syndras stun is very telegraphed since no matter what, it works off at least 2 delayed effects. the delayed Q followed by the delayed E-orb projectile, or delayed Q-delayed W-W, then delayed E. Obviously it's not impossible but when you have almost unlimited dashes in a minion wave AND an ability that is insta cast that 100% shuts down the combo, you are obviously a million times better at syndra than i am if you think he's not a problem for her. Q isn't affected by wall, but it's near impossible to land on a decent yas because of his insane E mobility and how small the delayed aoe is. W does not go over the wall btw. the orb will drop in front of the wall(same with orb +E) Personally i have an easier time against him with velkoz since his autos and W make it easy to proc his shield.

the examples weren't the point tho and i don't like listing examples for things like this since there is always people who ignore the point entirely to wine about one or two of the examples, so thanks for at least acknowledging the point being made lol

it's really simple as to why yasuo is disliked

he gets a ton of ''free'' stats

Free hp (shields) Free Crits Free armorpen

Not going to say he is easy to play, i have only played him once in an all for once game mode and the point and click knockup is easy enough to do as is the tornado and the ult is pure easy mode that being said i didn't do so well, doh was my first time, but i can see myself mastering that champion mechanics wise easier then i mastered sion for example because sion requires decent mechanics for some of the things he does in addition to timing things correctly for which you must have game knowledge, the mechanics themselves aren't any harder it's the timing which requires game knowledge to calculate. Though sion has a few mechanics which are exceedingly difficult to pull off like wall jumping with his ulti People will claim mechanically difficult so he is allowed to have all that shit but that is bullshit mechanics isn't a weakness.

ok back to yasuo

he is simply a tad overloaded, i get why people are mad about windwall but that is not the main issue

Yasuo cannot fall behind due to the free stats, and snowballs automatically if he doesn't fall behind. And snowballs beyond hard if he does get ahead He has a strong early game and many early powerspikes to help him with that And he outscales most opponents as well

And that is super annoying because it feels like an uphill struggle to put him behind in the first place, because he has twice your toolset so he can outplay you but you cannot outplay him, so you wait to capitalize on his mistakes. You put him behind, except nothing happens he didn't actually suffer from it.

He is one of those champions that removes your agency from the game You cannot make plays on him He can fuck up, and even if he fucks up he has such an easy fall back, not only does he have utility with knockups suspension armorshred and windwall no he can simply wait for the next powerspike whether that be his first purchase of phantomdancer or his 2 item powerspike

Yasuo barely has weakpoints you can capitalize on and when he does present them 90% of the roster doesn't have the kit to exploit them and for the 10% that do it won't matter because of his fall back pattern.

I think that is his issue

He could use a little bit of trimming on his kit

Like getting rid of his ults armorpen for example Nerfing the shield a bit, make him work harder to acquire the shield by increasing the needed distance traveled and reducing the time it's active to 0.75 seconds

Spoofghoul3 votes

like i said most of his mechanics aren't

however he has a few which are among the hardest to pull off in the game though those aren't your basic bread and butter stuff

However Sion relies more on timing his spells which requires a lot of game knowledge you are constantly keeping track off how fast is someone going when to drop the big axe to stop a dash, too soon and no knockup too late and hes already out of Q zone How much damage is x ability going to do, can i dodge it in time, if i do will i still be in range for when i can detonate W Do i use E to shred? or do i use it for extra magic damage, can i land my ult and Q timely after using e for the shred

Then there is the harder stuff like looking left and firing minions away to the right Canceling your attack animations to speed up your attacking

And then there is stuff like making 90 degree turns with ultimate And then there is the even harder stuff like wall jumping with the ulti

here's yasuo's ult mechanic for comparison, is someone somewhere within range in the air? if yes press R to blink to them and deal damage and extend the knockup

basically he just presses R, his dash is similar point and click and you can even attach the knockup to it, which is his only timing sensitive skill but once mastered a very easy unavoidable point blanc knockup

Yasuo does not have many hard mechanics he just uses them more often and in quicker succession he is one of those champions you master and then becomes kinda easy to play after mastering them

One of the reason's sion's kit stays so engaging is because everything is so timing and gameknowledge sensitive, and that shit changes patch to patch, in addition to having SSSS+ tier hard mechanics you can TRY to master. Sion also leaves clear counterplay to his opponents with his telegraphed kit making things harder for him turning most matchups into an actual skill matchup.

Yasuo simply out kits you that isn't hard or skillfull at all

For me it's that it feels like I get all the bad Yasuos that try to 1 v 9 and get instantly deleted while the enemy team always has a Yasuo that could get a Heptakill blindfolded. Why do I get all the bad yasuos? WHY? Answers these questions!

i hate yas because of wind wall. 1 wind wall cast gives yas enough time to kill anyone whos kit the wind wall negates being most adc's and mages.

Fed by Snu Snu5 votes

The most telling thing about Yasuo is the simple fact that when the time comes for Urf mode, Yasuo just remains Yasuo. And he can still compete as if nothing has changed.

I'd say that more of his power should be loaded on his higher levels of Q than his R to be honest. Having tried him a couple times, connecting Q consistently is not as easy as it looks. Taking 50% off a whole team by pressing R freely thanks to your Malphite/Lee Sin though...can't say it was any feat of skill.

IronwallJackson4 votes

What are you talking about, Yasuo is one of the worst champions you can play in URF because his bread and butter abilities aren't affected by the CDR. The overall power level is significantly higher on URF because of how spam-happy other champions become, and not admitting the disadvantage that puts him at is disingenuous at best.

Also, Yasuo's ult only does about as much damage as one of his autoattacks come late game, so it's no great shakes in that respect. lockdown and arpen is where the value lies.

Toshtok1 votes

that's exactly what he said, in urf yasuo is just yasuo. he doesn't get affected. in a normal game technically it's like playing a urf mode individually where everyone is in slow mo.

Glad you asked, not sure why you did though.

  1. Open threads are to be read and discussed despite the time period! given that if it is a1 year old or older some ideals might have changed, in 5 months maybe you got a haircut but everything else is pretty much the same.

  2. I do what i want with my time and it's not up to you to dictate or judge what or where I spend my time. (If you think it's up to you please do get off your high horse)

  3. Why deflect when the comment had nothing to do with time-period discussions?

  4. Even if a discussion starts 100 BC it can still go on to these days, we're still studying what people 700BC said, why would I not jump in a 5month old thread :D

So I think you're right when you talk about player behavoir, but I don't think you're right when talking about his kit. I think his Windwall is actually the least frustrating thing about Yasuo. Now Windwall was the initial thing that brought Yasuo hate. It had the full level of frustrating that you'd expect, but in the present it isn't difficult to play around.

Now I propose that almost every other part of Yasuo's kit has something that makes that spell more frustrating to play against than Windwall. Let's start with his passive. His shield is basically a "you don't get to poke during laning phase." As a character that excells with an all-in playstyle having his passive counter a playstyle that is strong against his playstyle is inherently frustrating, and the fact that it is only half of his passive makes it twice as frustrating.

On the topic of his passive, there is the other half of it. Yasuo get's free crit chance, that is inherently frustrating. "But there's a drawback." you say? Well there is a drawback that is almost entirely removed with one item that is core to any crit based build. My proposition is that IE should interact with Yasuo's passive differently than it does with basic crit in a similar way that they made IE interact with Ashe's passive.

Now for his Q. It's a spamable spell on a manaless champion that gets extra utility when used in succession and a larger hitbox when used with another spell. Did I mention it can be used for animation cancelling making Yasuo do a lot more damage than otherwise?

I proposed his W isn't annoying and am still on that.

Now for his E. It's a spamable movement spell. Not only that but it has the Kha'zix and Tristana effect in that after being used aggresively it can also be used to escape, but unlike Kha and Trist who have to get a kill Yasuo doesn't have risk attached to it, at least in laning phase.

Now for his Ult. The only major thing I propose is annoying about it is that if he uses it on you under turret the turret won't target him until the end of it allowing him to pretty freely turret dive. "It's not like he has to hit you with something to ult you. Hur Sarcasm." Yeah he has to hit you with something he can get on a moment's notice and doesn't take and resource.

HalcyonDweller3 votes

I think a good fix for the Q would be to make it an auto-attack reset, thus allowing him to use it after auto-attacks, but then putting his auto-attack on cooldown, instead of allowing him to weave auto-attacks in between casts.

I agree that the dash is too low-risk for the reward he gets from it.

But I disagree with you about the passive shield and about Wind Wall.

The shield is only partially broken, and I think it counters melee champions instead of poke champions. For poke champions, auto-attacks or low cooldown poke spells are enough to burn off the shield before laying down some real damage. I think that it hurts melees a lot more, since they can't poke it off him before he engages on them, basically giving him free damage prevention in trades with them.

The Wind Wall is frustrating because it takes away from opposing players' glory moments. Now that in itself might not be such a big deal except that then the ability has so many ways it is frustrating; it lasts forever (in terms of a teamfight), it can block ultimate abilities with much longer cooldowns than Wind Wall, costing Yasuo very little while costing the opponent so much, and it can erase abilities even if they barely touch the edge of it - making abilities that look like they should have got around it just vanish.

iahim985 votes

Interesting discussion, the thing that I find the most frustrating when laning against yasuo is his E, that mobility in laning phase makes him so annoying to deal with, he can E the hole minion wave, hit you and if he remembered to let 1 minion to dash back he's safe, while you had to keep track of him so he won't Q or E-Q from whatever place he is, lookout for his W and try to auto him once to proc his shield, and all this dance repeats the next minion wave. I find it the easiest when I'm with Darius or Riven , where if he is close to me he is the one in trouble, and I can zone him from my minions so he can't dash.

Something that I want to see is his E having an ammo system, something like 3/4/5/6/7, recharges every 6 sec and refills in base (not necessary this numbers, I want a low number early and definitely not infinite uses at max rank), I think this would solve a part of his frustration, and wouldn't hurt as much good yasuo players as they usually dash only when necessary and look for good angles to reach their target faster, but would solve the frustrating cases like after trading and running back with half hp you see your own minion wave coming and you feel like "you little traitorous bastards" as they seem like they come to aid yasuo, not you. My goal with these changes is having yasuo care about how often he uses his dashes and give the opponent a chance to leave yasuo immobile if he makes him use all his dashes (or yasuo wastes them).

I also like one of your ideas in having his W a health bar, but instead of being like yorick's W, that bar would show how many hits can block and be consumed if it blocks something big (and maybe not having its hp decrease the 1st 0.5 sec to reward good yasuo players for the right timing), as I find his W be the most annoying in teamfights, and it feels the worst when your ability got blocked by accident when he W to block something a few seconds ago, and all this time also making adc useless.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Thanks! I agree the dash can be really frustrating, I like your idea for an ammo system, it seems like it would add a fair amount of resource management to balance out how hyper-mobile he is in lane.

Apparently early in it's design his Wind Wall was a very brief ability that would slash an incoming projectile or ability. I would love to see something like this done with it, either reducing its current duration, or making it like a cone area ability in front of him that lasts for 0.5 to 1 second.

I think if it has been out already in the teamfight... well I agree it's frustrating, and certainly wasn't blocking what he used it for anymore, and no offense meant, but at that point it is kind of on us for firing something into it, since we could see it was there.

iahim982 votes

Agree that is on the player for firing, but after a few seconds is hard to tell how much it has left, especially in teamfights where everything seems to take so long, and there is usually the case where you need to shot the ult now or it might not be useful enough to change the teamfight anymore, ending up with "God, I hope I counted right and windwall expires". It also has one of the weirdest hitboxes, and if its not pointed directly at you is hard to see, but it can still block abilities even if is almost parallel with the skillshot as long as it barely touched the line, It happened to me more then a few times where I try to use the counterplay of the windwall by moving around it, only to still have my skillshot blocked just because it touched the edge, making me feel stupid for even trying to move around it (while also wondering if it was blocked anyway, wouldn't have been better if it was blocked from the beginning, instead of me wasting time going around it and staying close to the danger).

Asayake 5150glow4 votes

I dislike Yasuo because of how easily he stomps match ups in his favor. Mid lane, with mages that are unable to stay away from him and their own minions, without unWindWall-able CC, it's a simple matter of Q, E+Q, Windwall, E+thirdQ+auto+R on the Yasuo's part, and that's a Flash blown or a kill. Against those who can, it's a skill match up, but being able to do that just feels bullshit. And it makes you think you can do that with everyone, which makes it feel bullshit when you pull off your ult and then lose the duel afterwards.

Champions who Yas can outtrade toplane and don't have the capacity to stick to him are also fucked. But most top laners can deal with Yasuo once they get a few items, if they respect the lvl 1-2 Yasuo has.

I really really wish they nerf the duration of it. That is the real nerf he should of had a long time ago.

Myrkrvaldyr2 votes

Yasuo isn't even a popular pick or ban worthy in high elo. If a champion is not used often or banned often in high elo it means people have a very wrong impression of a champion. Yasuo's and Zed's kits allow for some nice damage and safety. Even though their skill cap is considered high they're simple enough to do decent with, which is why lower elo people complain. Zed, for example, has a low win rate right now. People stopped bitching about Zed.

I wonder how much would change if Yasuo had mana.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

It would definitely be interesting to see the impact of giving him mana. Kassadin's ultimate has a stacking mana cost. (Not to argue he should be like Kassadin, one ability is single target, the other is area free-target) But it would be nice if he could run out of a resource from spamming dash.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

There are two changes I would like to see made to Yasuo. First I would like to see his crit passive adjusted so that it scaled instead of being flat. This way his power spikes from crit items early in a game would be more manageable.

I would also like to see his Wind Wall changed. There are a number of things I've thought of that might help deal with the problems I've outlined in the post above, so I'll list them out here (I'm not advocating for all of these, just raising the possibilities for others to consider).

  • Make it so that it doesn't block 100% of an ability, maybe just make it so it halves the damage and cc of it.
  • Make its cooldown go up if it absorbs a much longer cooldown ability.
  • Give it a health bar like how Reworked Yorick's wall works.
  • Make it absorb abilities up to a point (like its HP bar) and then disappear, but grant him a shield equal to some % of the effects or damage absorbed.
IronwallJackson4 votes

If you nerf the Windwall, which is a huge portion of Yasuo's power budget, he'd have to get some pretty serious compensation buffs in return to keep the change power-neutral. I don't think anyone wants to see Yasuo running around with stats like an actual bruiser.

And now to address your proposed nerfs. The first makes it into a strictly worse braum shield, the second is bad for everyone since pretty well no one can figure out when it would be off CD again and it's not like it comes up more than once per fight, and the latter two would make the windwall pop pretty much instantly during endgame fights and in the face of certain abilities.

Ability duration and width are good tuning levers if you feel like eschewing cooldown as a possibility. Full effectiveness is necessary for an ability like this or it might as well not exist in the first place.

An Enemy Sutando2 votes

This is all too unnecessary and would lead Yasuo to become another Irelia/Fiora type of champion, as this would be removing a large part of his survivability.

The only nerfs his W would need, if any at all are:

  • Shorten its duration, as windwall is supposed to be a reactionary spell.
  • Remove/Reduce its size growth per level.
