How I went from Silver 5 to Gold 5

FourVsFive··17 votes·8,937 views

I played support only and have my team carry me :P

Haha, in all seriousness even though i played support only and really not a good player that deserves to be in Gold 5, I found some games the key to winning can come down to attitude. I never knew how attitude could make you win or lose games till I started playing ranked.
And it starts with champ picks and bans, even though people may not listen and pick champs you don't want or not ban the right champs, do not be mad simply support your team best you can and keep any negative thoughts to your self and not type them.

If some one does something dumb or is feeding, do not discourage them, and if some one does do so, tell them its ok and to ignore the others. We all are one in the team putting 1 guy down is like putting the whole team down, so yah that may only be able to get me to gold 5 and luck may be the most part of it, but it helps more then I thought. It may increase your win rate by a small margin, but every little can help. Thought id share and maybe it will help you too.

I feel you dude, I'm gold 3, I myself in terms of skill don't think I deserve this rank, of all things, I'm someone that only fills, I don't have a main champ, I don't have a main role, sometimes if I feel like playing a specific role or am 1st/2nd pick depending on which team I am, I call support or jungle, to have the least chance of getting counter picked. I myself wouldn't call myself good, in fact I'm pretty sure a silver 2 would be able to beat me if they used their main against me.

In all honesty, despite in League where you're supposed to watch yourself, and improve yourself, I'm always thinking about how I'm going to play with the people around me. Should I go top as a tank for the team at the same time counter pick the enemy? Or should I just play someone that fits in the team comp, should I get a champ that provides peel, or should I get a champ that does damage? I always question myself these (Unless I'm the first 2 picks, I just hope my team can work it out with my pick).

After that laning phase, I decide, does my enemy feel like he's better than me in this match up. If yes, play passive even if the levels are the same, if I'm bot, is my ally able to put some pressure on the enemy, if yes, poke them, if no play passive, aim for disengages or shields etc.

Rather than watching my own skill, I always tend to watch my allies and enemys skill level and get the feeling about how good they are and how bad they are. Most of the time I never end up overestimating them or underestimating them. And then sometimes I get lucky, I focus and somehow pull a flashy play, but never end up being able to make the same play in any other game T_T, and thus I somehow reached gold 3

I just got to Plat 5 last week, and I also primarily fill. Maining one champ I think would get rather boring for me personally.

I believe that if everyone else on my team gets their best role, while I am decent at any of them, I am far more likely to win due to my allies' skills. I'm also betting that toxicity on my team is also somewhat decreased on average, because everyone is more likely to go where they want.

Good luck with continuing to climb!

Why should a player with a bit better reactions and a bit more map awareness than you / but being a big flamer and a negative influence for the team be better rank than you?

XeroKimo1 votes

Well you have to admit, everyone get's mad sometimes in a game, I'm no exception, tho I'm normally the guy with a negative mentality (Real life too) if more negative things happens in my game (primary rage source = lag) Then yea I could start getting pissed off and so.

Please don't. We support mains actually carry games. We initiate, heal, peel, and take damage and the blame for you "carries." So quit making supporting sound like some effortless, easy job. "Not a good player" makes it seem like you don't need to be good to support. Otherwise I agree with you on the attitude part.

meh, don't be proud of gold

go for plat+, that's where the real loot is at

and don't stop at plat 5 cuz that's basically gold 1.0

Karlyr1 votes

The same goes for Silver 5, Gold 5 and (especially) Diamond 5. I'd even say than more often than not D5 players play worse than P1 because they don't care of ranking anymore because they know that they won't reach Master.

Mooing Kev2 votes

I can definitely feel this. I met a troll D5 player for my diamond promos who fed 0-7 as nasus because our jungler never came top. Makes climbing out of p1 really hard.

Another thing you can do is fall back on trying to make calls. Simply going with the flow reduces the amount of conflicting calls and makes your team move as a whole

This would be a pretty grandscale project for it to affect my winnings honestly its easy for me to not say negative to my team but all it takes is for some guy to open his mouth to ruin it for everyone else, and I dont have much control over that

FourVsFive1 votes

Yah I try to support the guy that is getting hated on by telling them its ok and to ignore them, but not much else I can really do. And try to tell the others to chill and focus at the task on hand. At least show that not every one is hating on them.

Nucleophilic atk1 votes

To be honest, I wouldn't do that. I got a random chat ban one time (while I was actually being good). I tried the support ticket and got nothing...so I came to the boards to ask Lyte. He said that I was chat banned for defending a teammate. This dude was flaming so I said "calm down ffs" and told the player being flamed to just mute/ignore and report after the match. I literally got a chat ban for this...because apparently you can be chat banned for saying "report X", which is stupid.

For a short time I had a 90% winrate with Volibear by farming jungle and not ganking at all. If my laners did well, then it was an instawin. If my laners did badly, then I took the blame for it, everyone beat up on me, which actually raised morale since everyone had a punching bag to beat up on (I just muted them :P), and I tanked all of the turrets with my Warmogs+Randuins+Spirit Visage.

As someone who reached diamond last year just using a touch pad. A massive part of the game is attitude. I would say it is easily a 20% swing in your chance to win any given game with equal skill levels. I know I make bad decisions when I am angry at a teammate and found that muting sometimes was my friend. and just constantly telling people to keep focusing on making plays, getting gold and dropping wards to help us figure out a way to win.

I won a lot of games I shouldn't have won because the other team got angry at each other and I was able to talk my teammates into keep trying to make plays. Probably 1/4th of my wins in ranked last season had the other team saying that they "threw" or "report 'player' for throwing/negative". It only takes like 3-4 wins that could have been losses to move you up an entire division.

I don't know man...I was nice to that 0-5-1 top laner...he finished 0-15-3.

I try to have this attitude, I know people have bad games and everyone makes mistakes, but GOD DAMN, after a losing streak filled with trolls, feeders, a support Teemo that isn't supporting, a Warwick that doesn't even upgrade Hunter's Machete and constant toxicity, it's hard.

I try to just fill whatever role is needed most of the time. I'll request my position and champ so they don't ban it (which they do anyway), then if someone else really wants that role I'll move onto another. This has eased a lot of my own stress in champion select, going into it expecting to not get what I want.

I have a terrible temper, but I have had games where, as a team, we worked together so well, that victory went from impossible, to easy

This is coming from bronze elo hell. I have had very few good games, but the few matter the most

Godhri1 votes

I main mid but I haven't carried a game in such a long time that I don't feel like I deserve my recent rank of Plat 3.

Budupops1 votes

really not a good player that deserves to be in Gold

You'd be surprised, i've had gold intentional feeders in some of my games.

I go into every game assuming I've played with everybody there before and they pissed me off and my win rate is only a little bit below %50.

IziMytTJd71 votes

I'm a gold 2 player, and every time I play ranked on a new account I find that winning in silver is all up to chance. Sometimes your team simply will not let you win, and there's just nothing you can do. It is THE elo hell. Bronze? I can win easily (placements are basically bronze). But silver is something else. I placed in silver 2, and then got DEMOTED to silver 3 because my teams just would refuse to win. Once I make it to gold the games get so much easier every time.

Before I start...inb4 tryn doesn't take skill.

My personal experience with climbing came through the detailed guide from a challenger player for tryndamere (Not Rohammers).

I carried myself from Silver 3 or 4, all the way to Gold 2 by the end of season 3. I read his guide (which was a collaboration between himself and another seasoned tryn player) and each matchup while watching his stream, he explained how and why he won his lane while streaming and in his matchup details he explained the simple things to look for to gain an advantage.

On top of that, in his guide he broke down explanations about what skin has the better animation for crit, what the hitbox differences were like, he even demonstrated a neat cheesy trick with tryn where your aa animation can be paused mid swing and if you're paying attention you can see if it's going to be a crit or not and if it was, you could use that next swing to your advantage (I can explain in more detail if people want to know)

With all this information and all the explanations he gave during his matches, it helped me gain solid knowledge on playing tryn at a higher level than before. This was mainly for tryn top, but in the guide there was info for tryn in the jungle.

His stream and detailed guide helped me understand things in LoL that I previously either didn't understand, or was unfamiliar with.

Everyone has their own way of learning the game and once they figure it out, it makes it that much easier to learn.. For me, it was having someone with a higher understanding of the game to break it down for me and others with a detailed guide and visual representation. Compared to other champion guides, this was the most informative to me.

you must be lucky a bit to have a decent team. last game i had a malphite who feed riven to 12/0 in early and he said report me and i had 18/6

When I got dumped in s5 this season, it took me 2 days to get back to gold, from the supportive roles:

-Play support, steamroll bot, control the game. -Play jungle, get your lanes going while controlling dragon (read: solo it the moment you see an opportunity), control the game.

You basically want to do what you don't trust your team to do, which is all the nuanced things like engaging teamfights and warding and such. You can force wins even with a lame score, the key is to just put so much pressure on the game that your team gets a free ride and the enemy team collapses under you. For example, Vi with a cookies page: gank like crazy early and take and early dragon, and then build tanky and soak up all the enemy burst damage when you engage teamfights (ideally escaping so you can wait for Q to come back up and jump on a carry again). You'll end the game with a weak score aside from dragon count, but you gave your team the freest ride.

Very good advice. I try to do this myself whenever it is needed. Sometimes I find it helps just to laugh at everything that's happening. For instance If I just died twice in less then 10 minutes I'll say a joke in /all chat. I also find that if you can get the enemy team to laugh it puts them at ease and relaxes their guard, which can help you in some cases.

You seem to underestimate the impact of a good support in a team. You can create picks, save teammates, deny gold from the ennemy because of all that utility.

A good support player will really make a huge difference. It's completly false to say that you are getting carried when you play support. You are, in fact, carrying your ADC/Mage until they can carry you back. This goes from warding to saving lives.

Pro player examples : LustBoy, Madlife, Kasing, Hylissang.

Mooing Kev1 votes

This is true but that is because these pros are playing with other teammates that they communicate and have high synergy with. In solo queue it's a different story. Some adcs are simply incompetent, either forced into the position or are hot headed adc "mains" who think they can just jump in to any match ups thinking their support is a god. Even if you barely saved your adc, what is the point if they don't kite, orb walk , focus the right targets and gets caught trying to solo farm lanes. This is why i try to play every lane EXCEPT support and adc in solo queue. I also

Karlyr1 votes

You don't have only your adc to help though. And orb walking isn't really necessary during laning phase. So you can be a nuisance to the ennemy adc for his lanning phase even if your adc can't teamfight properly. And from there you can help quite a lot your other teammates.

I won't say that support isn't hard to carry/climb with. But it's far from being a nightmare too. Just keep a good morale and everything should stay fine.

Mooing Kev1 votes

If you want to win rank, you need to step up and make an impact, especially in those games where you have a weak link on your team. Sometimes no matter how well you support, your adc is just too incompetent. Learn mid, win lane or pick champ that doesn't need to win lane to influence the game(Lissandra). Winning lane isn't enough, roam usually focused on bot lane and get gold flowing to the adc. Play jungle, and learn optimal paths, while warding deep(anyone can do this not just sup)to learn enemy jungler movements to counter gank. Proceed to snow balls lanes. Pick a tanky ass top laner with a lot of cc(team fight pressure) who can run tp. My go to top laner is sion who has everything. He has ranged farm/harass, an aoe zoning nuke with high potential cc if landed, an absolutely beast shield(best shield in game imo) and an ult that most people misuse imo by trying to land long range ults from half the map when you can simple just be in the front and use short range ults to disable multiple enemies at a higher success rate. I would say my biggest blunder season 4 was trying to play zed only mid hence led to me dropping short at plat 5. This season i've made a lot more progress playing various roles and trying to snow ball the team rather than focus on just winning my lane. So far ive hit diamond promos only once and been stuck at plat 1 for a while but hopefully i'll get there by the end of the season.

deadlychuck1 votes

I did a similar thing in season 3, i went silver 4 (placed into it) to gold 5 (for free stuff) in 2 weeks. I played most support, and i found that if you just ask people to do something or take an objective, then don't yell at them for not listening to you, then you can win a lot of games. Obviously some will ignore you, but all you have to do is have them notice you making a single good call, then they will be more apt to listen to your directions and shot calls later that game.

Silents4291 votes

You mean not whining on the forums about your supposed deserved ranked and how inaccurate it is instead of just playing gets you somewhere?

Wowww

Not a shot at you, good post. Just a shot at the players who know who they are.

I don't play league enough to be good at it, but I think it's always best to be encouraging. Honestly, what does flaming get you? A superiority high and a "summoner has disconnected"

ah more of Lyte's shitty propaganda

Asking for a report on someone is merely an opinion presented. I see no way this can be construed as something worth punishing. Riot has a system in place for this and someone is asking for it to be used. How can Riot's system work if players aren't using it actively? In the end, it's a player's choice what they find report worthy and there are many players who make false/twisted reports. For example, I had one person ask for others to report me for refusing to communicate after I informed said person that they were muted.
