Why is the Price for IP boost so expensive and not balanced?

FourVsFive··81 votes·4,828 views

Most expensive champs cost 975 RP, and a 50win IP boost costs 2,560. Highest IP average per game you can get is about +120 ip from IP boost. (assuming u trying to prolong game for most IP) So 50win boost that costs 2,560 RP will get you 6000ip which is about what it costs for the most expensive champs that are 6,300ip.

So buying a 50win boost is like paying 2,560 RP for 1 champ.... I would suggest reducing the price to something more reasonable like 1,800 rp.

Based on peoples comments it seems most agree ip boosts are for runes and not champs, and so the price is justified. So i suppose the question comes down to is spending 25$ worth of RP worth it for three 2k quints, or seven 820 seals a fair deal? I supposed the answer is yes for those who want to rush getting runes vs those who play for a couple years and are patient.

I assume it's for Runes.

Which are still overpriced as fuck, I shouldn't need to spend 2k IP on a single quint.

This. You don't use IP boosts for champs, you buy directly with RP. That leaves runes.

If you're paying RP for champs you're doing it wrong.

I never paid more than sale price for champs and got most of them through IP anyway.

The boosts are for runes, which are their own set of stupid problems. ~Uiru

Or just have a life.

Even at minimum wage, $10 = 1h. 6300 IP = 50 games = 40 hrs give or take.

Taarki8 votes

Wow... I don't know where you are living but min wage where I am is $7.25.

Probably Canada.

Here in Alberta, minimum wage is like $10.50

Right? 'Murica.

$15 an hour here in Seattle.

Even at $7.25, 975 RP is ~2hrs working, to get 6300 IP, you need at least 50 games = 40 hrs.

then don't buy them.

Problem solved.

Except Riot wants to sell them, and they'd sell more at a lower price. I doubt they've even visited the idea of lowering some of the prices they have. Have nothing useful to contribute to a thread? Don't post. Problem solved.

If a stall in a marketplace sells its food at 3 times the price of every other stall, do you walk up to them and complain?

No, you go to a different stall.

Cindikle2 votes

Ok, but that same stall sells your favorite cheeseburger. But you want to try their other products, which are for some reason set at a crazy high price.

So you give your feedback hoping things to change.

Basically what you said is "Go to DotA".

Also it is likely that people will often walk up and ask why their product is so high. Maybe Riot can explain to us what they intend IP boosts to be used for. Because it's obviously not champions.

LeeDark4 votes

If I actually like the people who own/run the stall with high prices, then yes, I'm going to suggest they lower the price to attract more customers. You come for the dish you like, but you might try something new if the price is attractive.

In fact, market research shows that people DON'T go to a different stall. Brand loyalty trumps price a significant portion of the time, so even in the real world instead of just an analogy, you are wrong.

JevelFaithful1 votes

I was actually under the impression they were overpriced luxury if you couldn't wait for whatever reason. Basically that you shouldn't buy them out of nowhere. Which is actually a pretty bad idea of them.

On the other hand, you'll get a lot of Ip by just playing without going for runes. You might be half way to that runeset by the time you want that runeset.

If you want to buy 6300 IP champions with RP, there is an extremely efficient way to do that. Don't use IP boost.

The win IP boosts are reasonably efficient for buying runes or cheap champions in the 450 or 1350 IP category.

The time-based IP boosts can be pretty efficient if you spam games over a weekend or something.

Old Man Teeto4 votes

It's Runes.

Champions can be purchased with $$$.

Runes can't but you can indirectly buy boosts to get runes faster.

The return rate is made intentionally poor so this is discouraged.

You win 100% of your games? Baller. Assuming you're mortal and win at most 65% you still get IP in your losses and would have a much larger IP amount than you cited.

FourVsFive5 votes

There is 2 types of ip boosts, I talking about the 50 win IP boost which only boosts your ip for 50 wins.

ActuallyArrow12 votes

the "50 Win IP Boosts" do not boost the IP you gain when you lose. While yes, he would still have more IP if he factored in loses, the math shouldn't include that seeing as he is calculating how much the bonus gives per win.

LeeDark3 votes

Except you didn't pay anything for the loss IP, or HALF the win IP. Just the bonus 120 IP for those wins. So you still only get 6k IP off a 50 win boost. The other... 9k or whatever it would be is IP you would have earned anyway.

You can just outright BUY two champs for that RP price, but the boost only gets you most of ONE champ. I'd say the OP's suggestion of 1800 RP is too much to pay. At 975, I'd start to think about it, but I wouldn't think I was getting a good deal even then.

Tylo Snoyer1 votes

Up vote for the use of baller and mortal.

Tsugaga3 votes

I'd imagine the price would be lower if people didn't buy them, but enough people probably get suckered into buying boosts. Boosts are a money trap that Riot will keep and not pay attention to as long as people are willing to pay for them.

TotalJerk3 votes

It's expensive and inefficient because you can buy runes with them, else it would risk throwing the game into pay-to-win territory during the initial 1-30 grind

NullDragon2 votes

You get IP as if you played a max length game for the gamemode you're in. So about 168 IP for ranked, every win.

Also, you can buy runes and stuff as well with those IP boosts. So yeah, it's for runes.

OreoRampage2 votes

So are you complaining about having to play a free game you enjoy in order to earn perks and bonuses that increase the value of the game you enjoy, thus increasing your desire to play this free game that you enjoy?

Spacesuit Spiff2 votes

I assume this is by design; they don't want to sell "power" so making it efficient to grind runes would be an issue. I occasionally buy a 2-day boost if I know I can spend a whole weekend ranking or w/e but I kinda prefer them being inefficient the way they are.

Malgana2 votes

How does the IP compare to rune costs though? I've already got most champions, so maybe extra IP for runes would be better since you can't buy those with RP anyway.

FluxBound2 votes

It's expensive so you don't waste your money

Worst Mid Ever2 votes

assuming you play like 4 games a day, ~60 ip a game, 150ip first win of the day, thats ~400ip a day, meaning 6300ip champion - 16 days or 64 games 4800ip champion - 12 days or 48 games 3150ip champion - 8 days or 32 games

if you actually enjoy a champion you would play at least 50 games on it before moving on to something else, hell someone like ireliacarriesu has 4k games on their main champ (probably enough to buy the rest of the champs in the game with no FWOTD bonuses), only new players who want to buy all the FoTMs at once want more ip per game, if you want to play champs you don't own make a pbe account

Because there are seasoned players like us that have over 125,000 IP and they're not needed.

Silents4291 votes

Wait you make over 200IP from a win with a boost.

Gavran1 votes
  1. per-win IP boosts are for suckers, per day is much more efficient

  2. IP boosts are the only "pay to win" (increasing total available runes gives a real if small advantage) thing in the game, and as such should be priced absurdly.

2a) runes are also "play (more often) to win" which also sucks but meh

why would you bother with a 50 win when you could easily get 25+ in a 7 day for 1000kish
