Let's have a serious discussion about Bard

Since his release, Bard has consistently shown low win ratios. Riot gave him a few consolitory buffs the first patch afterwards, and despite marginally low pick rates and win rates, and despite the common conception that he's weak, he has since been ignored. Bard is resting at an average of 45% win ratio, which, considering that there are 9 other players, is abysmal. This win rate extends to platinum, diamond and master; it's not a matter of people not having skill with bard, it's a matter of bard having inherent weaknesses that simply need to be adressed.

The first problem is, Most of Bard's power is niche and hard to access. His Q is only really powerful if used in the proper circumstances; the enemy has to be standing next to a wall or another enemy. His W is only powerful if you place the shrines and allow them to strengthen over time, which requires foresight that is often simply impossible. His E is highly situational, and, while conceptually sound, often feels difficult to capitolize on. And his R is the most situational of them all; it has an unreasonably long delay for a very small area that does exactly the same to allies and enemies. The best potential is being able to lock enemies out of the fight, but even then, it is nowhere near as powerful as, say, a lulu ult or a sona ult that is devastating on teamfights.

The idea is that his power is shifting and requires great skill to use. That idea is really cool in my opinion, but when compared with supports who have blatent, obvious and overwhelming power, Bard doesn't stand up. Bard does not have the hard engage of Thresh, or the tankiness of Alistar, or Poke of Sona, or the CC of lulu. In fact, he is one of the lowest damaging supports in the league; In lane, his damage is quite literally negligable, and even afterwards, he only has his passive and his Q with any damage, neither of which deal a whole lot. His sustain is good in lane, but problematic, because that's really the only thing he does in lane.

Another issue is his team must know how to play around him for him to even remotely work. His shrines are a unique mechanic that several players don't really understand. His Ult requires extreme capitolization to be even remotely worth it, and his Q is only cc, and very short duration, which requires his team to play around him. He is probably the most team-dependent support in existence; other supports can do their job almost regardless of team play, but he is completely innert if his lane partner doesn't know what to do with him. The same happens in teamfights, in other instances, in basically the whole game. When compared with a champ like blitz or annie who make it easy for the team to be effective, bard is extremely difficult to play around.

But the main problem is this; For all of the difficulty there is to play Bard well, and all of the difficulty to play around him well, there is not a reasonable reward for doing so. If you play bard effectively, it's about the equivalent of playing any other support normally. The problem is not that he's challenging to play; the problem is that he is extremely difficult, and when he's played well, it's barely noticeable. You should be rewarded for picking and playing a hard champion well, but you're not. Instead you can faceroll as annie and, in all likelihood, do better.

There are more problems than this. His passive gameplay, his lack of fallback gameplay when his team is behind, his squishiness that's mixed with low range, his high lane mana costs that necessitate roaming and leave his adc vulnerable, his lack of lockdown cc to protect his teamates... But it all boils down to this: Bard is not rewarding enough as a champion, and that needs to be fixed.

Please upvote and bump if you agree. Bard needs help.

I just always feel extremely useless in teamfights. Like you can try and stun a target with your q if they're positioned wrong, you can heal someone and give them a little speed boost with your shrine and if it's in the jungle maybe you can use your tunnel to reposition? Then your ult can either: be a really awkward initiation that's difficult to capitalize on, awkwardly pause the teamfight in the middle, or be used to catch people running away if they're not good at dodging easy to dodge abilities. Really I feel like Sona's ult is 100% better in addition to being able to contribute more with her other abilities.

Tunnel, Peel, Flee. Tunnel, Peel, Flee. Tunnel, Peel, Flee.

His tunnel tends to make his Q easy to land. His W is nice to boost the speed of an ally or give them an extra hit. His R can be super rewarding Peeling off groups of enemies at once, giving your entire team turret dive capabilities, protecting your turret or even stalling so your team can get in range. The roaming factor means I can support the whole team. The biggest factor imo is your team not knowing how bard works as a support.

I like playing bard because he is fun. And the gratitude of every single epic flee is multiplied by each allied saved in the process

But that's the problem. He requires extreme team knowledge and gameplay to only be as effective (or slightly less effective) than a support who does not.

That's not a balancing problem though. Riot isn't going to buff someone, if they're low win rate isn't the result of poor numbers. And if you tried doing that, he can become oppressive real fast.

If the champion is not rewarding enough, he needs to be buffed. That is a balancing problem, pure and simple.

youve just been using him wrong.

Th reaosn Bard isn't going anywhere in most of LoL is because his heals and damage are minimal, his utility is double edged and he requires his team to exploit his good shots.

All of these things are utterly unusable in a disorganized team environment such as Normals or Solo/Duo Ranked (and even not-so-good in 3s). So he either gets a rework or you'll just have to face that this isn't a character for non-organized use.

his heal needs a buff on mana cost or even on the heal or the 10 sec mechanic

Honestly, I think Bard has three major problems that, if fixed, could make him extremely useful.

A) Bard's Cosmic Binding is, aside from Meeps (if he has 25 chimes) and one heal, pretty much all he contributes to Team Fights. It stuns two people for 1.8 seconds at most on a (base) 12 second cooldown. This is basically a crappy mix between a Vayne Condemn and a Taric Dazzle. Unless it's League Of tanks, you'll be using this once a fight. My suggestion? Remove the target limit. Cosmic Binding can go all the way regardless of the number of targets it hits, but all targets (if it hits more than one) are stunned.

B) Shrines take far too long to charge up for so little healing. Seriously, Taric heals better than your Shrines will unless they fully charge, which takes ten seconds. Charging should take five seconds at the absolute maximum, and improve the base heal.

C) Meeps do pretty much nothing for damage or harass until much later on, forget actually fighting both laners. Remove the 25 Chimes bonus, make Bard start with Meeps that deal damage in a cone.

Just do these three things, his win rate will rise by at least 3% if not hit 50%

Bard is a rotational/pick based support.

His ultimate is used for either picking, or splitting fights. Ulting 2~3 of the enemies team allowing your team to focus on those who are still there, or by allowing a full converge onto those you ulted.

His Magic Journey allows him to out rotate almost any other support, and bring along his teammates as well. This gives him flanking/directional attack patterns to allies that wouldn't normally be there.

His win ratio spikes in organized play because that's what he is designed for, organized play. His numbers are decent enough that he can survive a lot of lane match ups, and win others, but his play pattern is very strong in a lane swap scenario.

In a full 5v5 team fight Bard is intended to be underwhelming to compensate for his other strengths. If the fight begins without you putting your team into an advantageous position with E, or picking off a carry (or more) with your ultimate, the best chance you have is to try and split the fight for your team to buy them time to kill off the other half of the fight. You're not Alistar, Annie, Janna or Leona who thrive in huge team fights.

TLDR: Bard is a strategic champion, not a "bash head into enemy team" champion, and outside organized play will always underperform.

But that's the problem. The only way he's viable is in very niche situations, and even then, other supports do just as well. That's not a state of balance; if you have to go to such lengths to make him situationally viable, he should be MORE powerful in those situations, but he's not.

I have 95 ranked bard games with like a 55% winrate. I find nothing u say to be remotely true at all. Bard is an excellent champion. Even players in my elo (silver1) know exactly how to capitalize on my ults, portal ganks, and Q stuns. I've never found a problem with team synergy as bard, unlike tahm kench... Who when I activate my ult, I just stand there being completely ignored by my team. He plays extremely well when his team is behind, for example his ability to pick off out of position enemis is better than any other support. His objective control outshines other supports. His disengage and peel is solid. And I also have confidence to say he is the best support in the game by far. I will gladly debate this with anyone who wishes to say otherwise. If riot and the community feel like giving him more buffs, then that's fucking music to my ears. It will only make him more OP in my opinion.

I'm sorry, his ability to pick out enemies who are out of position is nowhere near a lot of other supports, such as thresh, blitz and morg, who can supply garunteed kills.
