Disable autofill in ranked, period.

It's supposed to be a test of your knowledge and skill, not your luck. It's all well and good to have autofill in norms. People who are playing casually probably want to find a match faster, and aren't hindering anyone's climb when they troll after being autofilled-- which happens more often than not. But if someone wants to play Ranked, it's unfair to force them into Support when they want to play seriously.

The mentality that everyone should be able to fill works for professional players. But for the rest of us the only tried and true method to climb is to pick a role and one or two champions to know inside and out. They can't just tell us that if we didn't pick support, we had better learn it.

its a neccessary evil because no one wants to support. everyone wants to be le carry(despite the ironic fact that supports are currently the hardest carries in the game. everyone single one has over 50% winrate minus tahm)

if we got rid of autofill no one would pick support and que times would increased by 2x - 4x. why do you think you get autofilled as support 99% of the time? it exist purely for that reason.

if you want to "play seriously" then you probably should learn support. its a MASSIVELY underestimated role in terms of carry potential, and im not talking about the pure dmg supports either, im talking about actual utility supports like Janna Nami Soraka . even lane support Ivern carries really hard

It's not a necessary evil. The evil is that Riot is not taking the steps needed to make Support a desirable role. And they're putting the lack of effort behind the mask that "everything is okay" because autofill artificially shows people are playing support.

Support will, unfortunately, never be a desirable role compared to the "carry" roles.

Think about it for a moment - If support champions are super strong, they end up being moved to solo lanes to carry (Example: Mid/Top Lulu or Karma)

If support items are super strong, they end up being used by the other carry roles that need damage/utility/gold income (Example: Mid laners running Frost Queen's Claim)

@OP's point for the thread: Honestly, I don't mind the idea of waiting longer queues to be guaranteed my 2 roles, but that's because I have many means of distracting myself while sitting in queue. (Flash games, YouTube, Twitch, etc.)

The most obvious problem is mid-high elo players can easily be stuck with very long queue times if autofill was to be permanently disabled. So where do you draw that line between "players need to be able to fill so queues aren't 40minutes+ long" and "players are not good enough yet to be expected to play ANY role"? Like, for example, would plat 5 or higher players be expected to fill if necessary?

Thats funny because in overwatch support role is getting fairly popular or at least it's not hard to find someone to play support if you're at a respectable elo. Overwatch has provided an incentive to playing support, eg. Playing Mercy(a healer) gains more skil rating than a dps.

Actually lately everytime i have been autofilled or ppit fill on either rank or norms ive gotten jg near everytime. Which is rater odd considering how high impact the role is right now.

Still, to adress what the op said. Autofill does teat your skill, your skill at playing all roles. If you want to climb then you have to accept the fact that autofill is a thing. Learn how to play all the roles. Not only does it help for autofill, but it helps your role. You will understabd what the whole enemy team ia doing, instead of just what your counterpart on their team is doing.

The problem is, even if you know all rolls decently, you will still be inferior to someone who mains said role all other things being equal, so being autofilled into a role puts the person in that matchup at an inherent disadvantage, broad knowledge or not.

And that affects not only that player, but the rest of the team too.

You know it's really silly that these threads get downvoted seeing one end of this scenario. I'm a support main and get autofilled sometimes into adc or Jungle, jg being the role I don't play whatsoever. Knowing your strong points is a strength in itself and there are certainly people out there that want to support. Having your match lost due to autofill tilt in ranked is unacceptable and I find it ridiculously poor that we're in Season 7 of a game with this playerbase size and you're telling me that "longer que times" is the only repercussion here.

Yeah, they don't seem to understand that people won't want to play the game at all if they don't even get to play how they want. They've got some impression that people would rather play one 20 minute loss for autofill protection for 2 games than wait an extra 2 minutes for each of 10 games.

I'd rather wait longer in queue than have someone who has no idea what they're doing in their role. It's particularly frustrating when someone is filled into Jungle and then autoloses the game due to how impactful it is right now.

As someone from a relatively higher elo please do this, theres almost no chance of winning when your ADC and jungler gets autofilled.

If you want to play seriously, you need to learn all roles. And what do you mean "they can't just tell us that if we didn't pick support, we had better learn it." ? Of course they can tell you that. Knowing your champ inside and out is great, but you learn a lot just from knowing how other roles work. If you aren't good enough to play the other roles then you are missing out on information on how to play against and around those roles as well.
