Maphite jungle is actually hilarious underrated

Run AS Reds, AS Quints, Flat armor yellows, Flat CDR Blues (this is really important for your level 1 ult cooldown). Run 0/12/18 and SoA for your keystone.

His clear speed is really good, because of his passive and maxing E first, jungle mobs do like no damage to you. Your dueling ability is hilarious good with an attack speed setup at level 3 w/ red buff, he outduels almost every melee jungler (Start W > E > E > Q). His pre 6 ganks aren't very good but try to keep your nose in the enemy junglers business and counter gank his shit pre 6. Then once you get 6, try really hard to keep blue buff and ult with it, so you're working with 20% CDR between runes/blue buff and by the time you're ulting again, you'll likely have purchased a source of CDR.

Cinderhulk allows you to get so fucking stupidly tanky and with his W, your armor is still through the roof with a few items so you get really tanky really fast and his bases damages are so fucking high that you can solo ADCs pretty much at every point of the game.

Professionally speaking, jungle malphite isn't good but in solo queue, if you can pressure the map relatively decently (mostly by counter ganking/tracking the enemy jungler), your level 6 ganks are insta kills and hilarious good at tower diving.

Personally, I liked using Armor Quints and Scaling Health Seals on Malphite (and Rammus) when jungling.

If I'm picking Malphite, then it is going to be against heavy physical damage (which generally means they have multiple autoattackers). As such, I like to take a very armor heavy build and need to get health elsewhere: item 1401 item 3025 item 3075

My main issue with him was how limited I felt when my ultimate was down (or if the enemy flashed it) and my lack of early gank pressure.

I don't find him to be a bad option in the right situation, but I find that other tank junglers are more versatile and consistently useful. I tend to prefer: Sejuani Gragas Nautilus Zac

Scaling HP definitely is better with cinderhulk but the flat armor yellows really help you out on staying healthy early on, which is where you want most of your power for runes imo (outside of scaling CDR).

Yeah they're better in almost every conceivable way but man, sometimes I don't feel like thinking and malphite is perfect for that
