Is this intended? Aery shielded my ulted. ally so the Brand AoE didn't kill her and then they just waited till my ultimate ran out. Xin put a spear through her heart as I watched in agony. If Aery didn't shield on my ultimate, it was an easy revive.
It is intended, as Aery will move towards any ally that you target (spell-wise), but also appears to contradict Zilean's ultimate. But hey, at least when you speed up an ally, they get a shield? (:

What I learned: Do not take Aery on Zilean.
The term "help an ally" is very vague.
I don't think it's a bug, but it also shouldn't work that way. Aery doesn't need a shield or heal, you just need to click on your ally. Nami E and Morde W are some examples I found that throw Aery on someone. That being said, that should definitely be changed because that's BS lol.
It's probably best to avoid aery entirely until this bug, assuming it is a bug, is fixed. If this isn't a bug, maybe you should try out other options since cockblocking your own ultimates as zilean is horrendous.
