Remind me again why Deathfire grasp was removed? And can it be reworked/brought back?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason riot said they removed DFG was because it burst squishies too hard when it was intended for tanks?

Isn't that what item 3285 does? Poke/burst squishy harder?

If this is the case then the removal of DFG was not justified and riot just did what they wanted to do as usual.

In any case, with all the old items being brought back, can mages get an updated DFG? And update the old active to a passive

Deathfire Grasp

Stats +120 ability power +10% cooldown reduction

From Active UNIQUE: Deals 15% of target champion's maximum health in magic damage and applies the debuff, Doom. Doom amplifies all magic damage that champion takes by 20% for 4 seconds. 90 second cooldown (750 range).

To: Unique passive: Your first spell against a champ applies Doom debuff for 4 seconds. Doom has a small cooldown of 40 seconds. Doom amplifies ALL DAMAGE from 4-20% base on target max health.

Thanks

I think, as a tank busting passive, it doesn't have a significant advantage over void staff.

I don't actually think you're reasoning for it's removal is correct; it was removed because it became a mandatory purchase that burst mages had to be balanced around, and Riot thought they could do better. I would argue that they have.

Personally, I do not like items that are mandatory purchases. But it seems that the game is headed back in that direction (see new IE), so maybe you'll get your wish. I think DFG would actually be a decent replacement for Luden's at this point.

the reason why was that the active was so polarizing that almost every AP champion had to be balanced around even potentially building it riot seems to think it's a limiting item, damage creep aside.

it gave many champions extremely reliable 100-0 burst potential, which people loved, but from what i could tell, riot hates having to think about it whenever they balance a champion.

Well, with the proposed passive I suggested, it would only be effective against tanks. I think it could be brought back

DFG existed back in the days before Riot began giving everything in existence True Damage. I also believe they toned down a lot of Magic Resist items after they removed DFG to keep Resistance from making Mages useless in the early game. Not to mention -- mind you, that Keystones and Damage runes also did not exist back when they removed DFG from the game.

Part of DFG's passive also still exists in the game right now on Abyssal Mask (15% increased damage), although it was also something similar shared with Abyssal Scepter (which only amped 10% magic damage).

Also, you need to factor in the new item which was added -- item 3907 (Spellbinder) , because it's probably even more powerful than DFG was. The reason it's not abused by a lot of champions is because it fills a specific niche where DFG could just be grabbed by anyone.

DFG was an item that was not healthy for the game. It was a general item that made weak champions strong, and strong champions terrifyingly oppressive. Since it didn't fill any specific purpose (as it was just as good against Tanks as it was squishy targets), anyone who built AP could use it.

You forgot the part where the item not only allowed champions to 100-0, they could do it with 2 spells instead of 4. lol
