Do You Feel The Champion Mastery Truly Shows Your Mastery Of A Champion?

To me I dont think it doesnt.

At 1st it did because it showed progression as you gained more mastery points. Then eventually you get the level 4 banner and then the level 5.

But then, until they released levels 6 & 7 everyone who was on level 5 was pretty much at a stand still. even though you still gain champion points on your champion, they meant nothing when it came to advancing to levels 6 & 7.

You had to craft your level 6 & 7 after getting S- or higher for level 6 and S or higher for level 7 (even though we all had plenty of S - or higher games on our level 5 champs while waiting for levels 6 & 7 to be released that we were given no credit for)

And now here we are again. For those who have champions at level 7 mastery. Again at a stand still. No matter how many S games we get on them right now they have no impact on advancing to the next level when they are released.

Why release the mastery levels in sections and not all at once? No one has a chance to show true mastery of their champion and run away from the field. Its like they want everyone to be the same levels. Everyone on level 7's is just sitting and waiting while everyone with those same champs lower level are still leveling.

And why is leveling past level 5 even linked to Hextech Crafting? Why should you have to craft your level after you already earned it.

I don't really think so IMO; I personally have a bunch of mastery level 5's that aren't even my mains, I simply got from playing them nonstop randomly when I felt like it. (IE Kindred and Caitlyn, two champs I play for pure fun and not because I am any semblance of good at them AT ALL.)

Getting level 6 and 7 is gated by the stupid Hextech system, and while the champion shard with IP thing helps, why exactly do we need to use essence in the first goddamn place? Honestly, just make it you need 10 games S- or higher to get 10 tokens to get mastery 6, make it 50 with S or higher to get mastery level 7. It would be a grindfest, but it proves a point.

You have to be GOOD at the champion you're playing to get goddamn mastery.

For example, as someone pointed out, World of Warcraft is notorious for it's reward system. More specifically, their end game pvp/pve. In PvP, the higher your ranked score is, the better PvP gear you can get, or even special mounts only achievable with hard work and a hella lot of effort/grinding.

For PvE (my area of expertise) you need to clear raids in tiers, the harder the tier the better gear, the better rewards, like if you beat Lich King there was a possibility to get his mount Invincible, though slim. Not many people got to even clear the raid. A better example, during Vanilla wow, even stepping FOOT in original Naxxramas was hell.

I personally joined mid- Burning Crusade and cleared Sunwell, which was almost as hard just less gear checking, but it still feels rewarding to walk around with that epic gear no one else has.

tl;dr: The system relies on two things, the amount of time you sink into playing one champion, and your luck/IP balance. Good fuckin luck if you're actually saving for champions and can't spend the IP as freely as vets. The mastery badges feel cheap and tacked on, not an actual REWARD like riding around on Ashes of A'lar or holding Shadowmourne in your hands, or even having a mastery emote to flash to show you know what you're doing.

When I see people flash their mastery emote, I don't think, "wow they must be good!" I think "wow they must play this champion a lot and have gotten the mastery cause of it." Which in itself is a problem.

Yes.....like i said in my post i dont even know why we have to craft a level we already earned. Just makes zero sense to link the mastery to the Hextech. Its just Riots way to try to more money. yes you can get the shards with IP but as you pointed out...not everyone has the spare IP. I sometimes forget how it was starting out, but it was just the other day i was duoing with someone that asked me if i had vayne....i told him yes...i have every champ. I assumed he had the cham i was about to lock in or why else would he ask me? but I ended up having to play poppy for the 1st time since her rework and in ranked because they had no other champ to trade me that i could use for support. And then after the game he was asking me which level 3 runes he should get. So there is a lot for newer players to spend their IP on.

So I dont think there is any coincidence that they linked level 6 & 7 mastery to hextech needing blue essence which you can only get by selling champ shards which just happened to be the hardest to get from chests. So then they make it to where you can buy the shards which is clearly really aimed at those eager to get the mastery.

They could of just as easily tweaked their system so that you get shards more often..........i mean you can literally open 10 chests and get 1 shard out of it if any...thats how unbalanced it is.......but no....they chose greed and just target those who are eager to ge the mastery and do not have the IP for it. So if they do not have the patience to wait for the spare IP, they have to pay to craft something they already earned.

You're arguing something that's fairly nonsensical. There will always be top level points where you can't level further until the games give you expanded leveling. It's like max level in an MMO, it's like hitting level 30 on your account, it's like hitting level 18 in game, it's like winning Worlds. There will always be limits, and complaining that you're at the top and that other people are also at the top is just bizarre. It's a video game, contained by programming and server space. There can't be indefinite anything.

Somehow you have managed to clearly missed my point but at the same time proved my point. I am not complaining about "i am at the top and at the same time other people are also at the top."

The whole point of this champion mastery thing is to show your experience & skill you have on your champions. You can not compare this mastery system to other games because ....lets just use World of Warcraft for example. Yes it has a level cap but your leveling is just based off of experience. You level by just simply playing. This LoL mastery system you level by just simply playing until you reach level 5. Then you can only level further by only obtaining a S- or higher. So you can no longer just simply play...you HAVE to do good. So for this system capping the levels you can reach and releasing them in sections hurts the whole point of calling it a mastery system because of the fact that once you reach level 7 for right now......any other S games or higher you get means NOTHING.

That should not be the case. And the only way to fix it would be to either not release the levels in sections or at least be able to store your S games so that when higher levels are released the can be used to craft the level and not just be good games wasted.

i really don't know any other way to explain it but this simple example clearly shows how this thing does not show your true mastery of a champion.

Mastery levels 1-5 really only show how much u play the champ. If i play a game or two more i will have Jax mastery 5 but i dont think im better with jax than the average jax player. Mastery level 6 and 7 however show that ur good with the champ because u need the S ranks for the tokens.

VvVVvV1 votes

Yes i agree party. I say partly only because yes you can reach 5 by simply just paying the champ. But.....those with better games will reach 5 faster...it is possible to reach level 5 faster with just good performances than someone who is just spam playing the champ and having average or bad games. So that is where your skill and mastery of the champ is shown. And then further by achieving level 6 and 7. But my whole point of the post is for right now once you reach level 7............even if you continue having S games or even S+ games you get nothing to show for it...it means nothing, They are not even set aside in your Hextech crafting to be used later when level 8 is released. That is why I say it does not show your true mastery of that champion.

MY problem is that I personally don't really have a problem getting an S- or above on pretty much any champion as long as I know their kit, might be me in Bronze but it's honestly easy to get tokens, I have a couple tokens for Tristana, Kindred, and Caitlyn, three champions I do not play well, I play for fun.

S ranks are not too difficult to get, as long as you know the basics of your role and don't feed/cs.

I played heavily before mastery was a thing, I've played more casually since then. So according to the mastery I'm a very inexperienced and new player.

Id like to get level 7 FeelsBadMan https://i.gyazo.com/edb639bf7e9ab8d4e5352490da621314.png

You can buy champ shards with IP and disenchant for blue essenses.

I know but I bought LB before getting the last 2 tokens on that account and now I only got ~900 ip on there item 3070

VvVVvV1 votes

This is exactly what i was talking about in a post above.......This is their way to target those who have not been paying the game long enough to have all the champs or most of and have al the teir 3 runes.........so they do not have a ton of extra LP laying around so if they relaly want to CRAFT WHAT THEY ALREADY EARNED....they either have to pay for it or wait.

no, just shows you have a lot of time

The system has been nonsense since release. The worst player in the world can get mastery 5 by feeding enough games. The intentional feeder that built 5 Zeals and Mobis on Rammus every game probably has mastery 5 with Rammus.

It should have been that you only gain mastery points by getting an A-/A or higher to begin with. It's too late for any of that now.

VvVVvV1 votes

Yeah......I think thats what some of the people who voted yes on this fail to realize. You dont even need to be good or have good games to reach level 5 on the champion....just play a lot and boom you will reach it...........thats not a show of skill or mastery of a champ.

And another way this system is flawed is that it doesnt even account for game length when calculating your grade. You can be having a amazing game....far above the top games of those you are graded against in your region and if the other team surrenders early you are just screwed.

One game that sticks out to me that is a prime example of this is a screenshot that was posted on these threads. It was a Shaco player. He went 27 - 0 - 20 with 199 cs........info on towers taken down, wards placed/destroyed/ and other objectives are unknown. But it was a Shaco jungle so im pretty sure its safe to say carrying as hard as he did there was at least 1 dragon and a baron in there. But even if there wasnt how is this only good enough for a A+

Some people might reply to this and say his cs was too low..but eep in mind that I have gotten S grades on jungle Voli with less kills, more deaths, less assists and less farm.

No one can tell me that the majority of Shaco players in NA preform like this or better, this guy was simply screwed because the other team surrendered early and the system doesnt factor in game length.

I think for Mastery 5+ there should be a spot where it also shows exp with the champ. For example I have like 350k on thresh. Just a thing that I think would be cool to add.

I think it's actually meant to be sortof a "i'm proud to main/play a lot of X champion"

Total Rookie1 votes

Getting mastery 6 and 7 mean nothing. I can easily get mastery 7 on every single champion if i play with a full group of bronze 5s. That way the whole enemy team would be around bronze 4. I'll have the most farm, kill, and gold because the enemy team would be like playing bots while your bronze teammates have trouble last hitting minions and don't know how to maximize their gold income. Performing better than your teammates give easy S or S+, not sure if anyone else notice. This system can be easily abuse, so mastery 6 and 7 mean nothing more than mastery 5 to me.

midnight oil241 votes

But that's why you, in normal play, don't get paired with a ton of bronze 5's. In normal play, without a premade team, you'll be up against players of your skill level, so you actually have to work to get your S

VvVVvV1 votes

But from what you are talking about is smurfing. Of course you are going to out preform others in the game. Personally i dont see the point in smurfing. Why would someone want to play against people they know there is no challenge against? Waste of time to me. But only if you have no choice because you have a 2nd account you are trying to rank up..therefore you have no choice but to start at the bottom.

But as far as the other part, I have seen no correlation between performing the best on the team resulting in more S grades. Everything that goes into factoring your grade has been put on these forums so much im not going to repeat it here but being the best performer on your team is not one of them lol.

My only reason for saying that I dont think it shows your true mastery of a champ is because they release the levels you can gain seperately instead of just capping it at a high level or no level at all. People have level 7 masteries on champs that they probably should actually be at level 15 or 20 by now if it wasnt capped at 7. Thats all im saying. So when you look at lets say a level 7 Yasuo and then you see another level 7 Yasuo......technically they are even mastery....but one them could actually have enough great games under their belt that they could already be through the next levels.

Gibberwatt1 votes

That's true - I got placed into b5 a long time ago, and since I recently came back, I've been pulling some form of an S almost every game.

Catastrop1 votes

Not in the slightest, I might M7 on Liss, but that doesn't mean I won't go 0/7 sometimes. All M7 means imo is that you got 5 good games on your champion.

Erockandroll1 votes

I think there's more merit with the level 6 and 7 since you can only unlock tokens on SR.

But at the moment, I could troll players about having level 5 Mastery on Fiddlesticks, and get their hopes up when they see my banner. Only for me to explain that I got that playing LotPK.
