On Matchmaking, Autofill, and MMR

Matchmaking Context:

When teams are matched up, the system takes the average mmr of all 5 players on each team and compares each team's average. If the numbers are close, then the system puts them into champion select together.

The Problem:

People can be auto-filled into a role they know nothing about or are very bad at, which screws up the balance of the matchmaking. For example having an auto-filled bot laner against an ADC main....

Two Potential Solutions:

  • Count an auto-filled player's mmr as a smaller contribution to the team's average mmr than normal.
  • Give people some sort of rating for each position they can play. (more on this below)

If using my second solution, I believe it should be implemented as follows:

  1. Players should have a base mmr still, something that is used as a starting point to represent their general skill at the game.

  2. But in addition to this they should have separate mmr for different positions that can be added into their base when they are assigned that role by matchmaking. (It could work like a multiplier instead of an adder. Maybe 1.1x or 0.9x for example.)

i feel that would work well because there are times when I get mid or top and just kinda go.. crap but on the downside it would also make people who are stuck with bad teammates suffer because they might do fantastic in lane and lose thus lowering their mmr because of someone else

If they lose anyways there MMR is getting hit. Might as well help them out by giving their team a handicap for the auto fill user.

System can be abused though. But that's ok.

How would it be abused? The system chooses who gets auto-filled, not the players.

In higher tiers, support is most often auto-filled. If I main support, I can choose two other roles Mid (most popular) and X (second popular). Then I can hope to get autofilled into my role of choice support. Even if I am not autofilled into support, I may be able to trade with someone else who was autofilled.

I mean it isn't grossly abusable. It would still rely on luck, but if the player can play most roles decently it opens up the possibility. Of course with autofill protection then next game it won't work as well.

Ok that makes sense. People who are generalists would benefit most, basically resulting in the equivalent of smurfing in autofill roles. That would definitely mess up the system. But I think that with auto-fill protection they could pretty well lock it down.

Abusers would have to play one game as NOT support after every game they get support because autofill protection would force them into one of the two roles they chose. There is still the risk of trading roles, but I imagine that this would make it complicated enough to frustrate most players who would try to abuse it.

Might not work as well for jungle, but I guess we would have to see.

On the other hand this would partially solve the problem of players being toxic for getting auto-filled. They would know they are getting matched more fairly most of the time.
