Summary of Marksmen changes: They can go in other lanes, but still, only they can go bot lane

Forget about the fact that ranged champs blatantly have advantages in lane vs melee ones

Is anything going to be done about this? Ranged ADs are consistently the most overpowered class of champions in this game and Riot buffed them MASSIVELY this season

The Marksmen update didn't solve any problems at all. Instead of seeing Jinx and Vayne every game, we see Lucian and Ezreal every game. Instead of Infinity Edge being the godly ADC item everyone wanted, now Essence Reaver is the best.

I don't think Riot intended for the Marksmen update to allow more bot lane diversity or allow them to have very obvious advantages in lane over all melee champions, but it's still been an issue for years that Riot hasn't solved. Even I as an ADC main would love to see melee champions be more viable in bot lane aside from some gimick like Leona and Pantheon.

So you could shit stomp them or something?

I'm genuinely curios why people think ranged champions having an advantage over melee champions is something that happened by accident. Ranged champions are supposed to do well against melees. How do you honestly suggest Riot give melees a fair chance in a ranged lane without making them completely broken.

It's pretty obvious the only melee champion who can viably go bot lane is Mordekaiser, otherwise they get stomped in almost all cases. I want to see more melee champions made viable in bot lane just to increase diversity. ADC is probably the least diverse of all roles with most games being Ezreal (37.7% play rate) and Lucian (42.3% play rate).

There is also Yasuo. He has some of the tools needed to survive on bot lane (passive shield, wind wall, mobility between minions). And unlike Mordekaiser, Yasuo actually has the sustained damage needed to not fall off late game.

They tried to put a non marksman type in the bot lane and people HATED playing against it, and playing as it. The idea to try and force other types of champs into the lane is probably on the back burner for now at least, if not totally canned

That's because they chosen the wrong champion to work as a melee bot laner.

Mordekaiser does not have an appropriate kit for bot lane. He was only working because he was broken, as he could have a clear level advantage and the damage on his Q was way higher.

If they were to choose a champion like Pantheon, or better yet, just create a new champion, that problem would not exist.

Well, Mordekaiser can still bot lane. But yes, it would be nice if more non-Marksman could go bot.

Cass would be a cool one, I think, since she's all about sustained damage. Azir too, since he's Marksman-esque and can take towers quickly.

Problem with a bot lane/duo lane, and why only ranged, auto-attack-based champions are sent there:

Shared XP. That's it. Ranged auto-attack based champs are the ones least affected by sharing XP with someone.

Think about it: Melees want levels for the tankiness from base stats. Ability-based champions want levels for the increases in base damages. In contrast, a ranged AD champions gets roughly 1500 gold worth of AD from levels.

The only reason why Mordekaiser can go bot lane is due to his W which still gives him extra experience on duo lanes. However, it is not worth using Mordekaiser bot lane. He is an extremely risky pick. Not only he is vulnerable (but strong) early (immobile, vulnerable to ganks, vulnerable to poke depending of the matchup) but he falls off late. It is better to just stick to a traditional ADC.

I honestly don't know why Riot had that idea to begin with. There are many better potential candidates for melee bot laners, such as Pantheon. Or they could just create a new champion.

The idea of making non-marksman champions go bot is good. But you must do it right.

Riot has stated that they actually made Yasuo to be a melee bot laner, and Yasuo sees more success in bot than he does mid or top.

Creating a new champion with the perfect kit for bot lane didn't change the meta. It just made him an oppressive mid laner because he's designed to fight against two champions at once in lane.

Is anything going to be done about this?

Best way to address the problem is probably looking into the core of the issue for why marksman are sent bot lane, with seems to come down to 3 factors:

  1. objective control. Marksman will always do respectable damage to Dragon/Baron/Towers/Inhibitors and, since destroying towers and inhibitors is required for blowing up the Nexus that's nice to have. Especially as marksman tend to have the range necessary to take down such objectives while the enemy team is actively trying to defend them. Granted: vs. tower/inhibitor/nexus damage is technically 100% of your base AD plus the higher of either 100% of your bonus AD or 40% of your total AP, so AP champions can still do some solid vs. structure damage, but even with shoving waves nothing short of an AP+AS champion really comes close to full AD, and melee AD simply cannot damage an objective that's defended by the enemy team without taking a massive risk.

  2. CSing capabilities. Ranged auto-attacks are a reliable means to get CS in a 2v2 lane, where melee range AA's are very unreliable. Especially vs. a support like Thresh Blitzcrank Leona, who can easily force every 23 CS gold you go for into 50% of your HP gone.

  3. Lower relative EXP. As bot-lane shares experience between 2 players, level spikes happen slower and thus a champion needs some way to deal with being ~3.5 AD, ~85 HP, ~40 MP, ~3.5 armor, ~1.25 MR (melee only), and ~55 QWER ability base-damages (often with the potential for another ~20 best-case scenario damage with max bounces/max hits/max standing-in-DPS puddle) behind mid and top, and potentially jungle. Having ~55 base damage above a target with ~85 less HP is pretty huge for a mage or assassin, especially as their QWER tends to do ~1,000 damage w/ lvl 18 bases and ramping that up with 450 AP only brings it up to 2000. As most marksman have 0 bothers to give about being a piddling 3.57 AD behind other lanes when their itemization adds +70, pretty negligible downside to sharing EXP: especially in exchange for a baby-sitter.

Those are all the main points I can think of. Break it down into smaller problems and you can find solutions.

Like, Riot could allow most abilities to damage structures and just buff their defenses to keep game time relatively the same to deal with the monopoly marksman have on securing objectives.

Riot could also potentially offer some cheap items to make CSing/shrugging off ranged harass more bearable.

Riot could also tweak AA itemization more in the Shiv/Tiamat direction favoring a burst of up-front damage then more of a lul afterwards to make the trade-off of EXP in bot-lane something marksman feel more similarly to other champions rather than ignoring it almost entirely..

Graves & Quinn can do fine top. But put someone like Ashe or MF there and typically I can't see them doing well. Ashe & MF still lack any significant escape/dash so going top can be risky with the threat of tower dive ganks.

The Bíg Ticket2 votes

Graves and Quinn autowin every top lane matchup. So does Vayne 95% of the time.

NavyDivea1 votes

They tried with morde but failed horribly. Hopefully they will make a Juggernaut for bot lane one day. With Graves, Quinn, and Kindred in other lanes in the jungle we need more diversity.

YCitizenSnipsY1 votes

How the hell do you make a juggernaut for bot lane? They would either have to be ranged themselves or completely broken like Morde was in order to do well down there.

Ratbert1 votes

Just have them handle it like they handled supports going elsewhere.
