At what point do you change course?

I started taking Vel'Koz support recently to climb my way out of the B5. It was working pretty well last week. Won 4 out of 5 games. Last night, for some reason, I lost three in a row. In each, it just felt like a comedy of errors. And after the first, the team never recovered. For example, the Zed would roam bot, get set up perfectly for the kill by the ADC and I, and he just wouldn't get the kill with a "I don't know what happened there?" comment.

I was talking to a friend of mine who plays recently (before last night) and he was like "You know, if you take support, you have to realize that you can't complain because you didn't take a carry-champ." Right now I sort of feel like I should give up on the role (support) because while I have fun playing this game, it's not fun to play with people who don't try to improve. And that's what a lot of the B5 is. Players who believe those that got to the top are just lucky. Meanwhile, I'm asking people left and right for advice, reading guides, and checking Champion.gg for item builds, top champs in lanes, and everything else.

And not to get too deep here, but it's starting to become a larger issue. I love the game. I like playing, but then I come to play, get trapped with folks who evidently, and honestly I mean it's evident, aren't trying to improve. I end up wasting 3 hours, then I'm pissed I didn't do something more productive nor did I achieve anything in game. About a month back I uninstalled the game because I thought it was setting me back in life.

So, once again, I'm looking for advice. Do I go top lane with Cheese Champs and carry? Or do I stick it out and ignore the one bad night. I think my major concern is that I'm about to go back to the B5.

It's possible to carry as the support but I definitely think jungle and mid have an easier time. Top lane is kind of the limbo lane. You can smash your lane and still lose the game or you can hard carry by split pushing and no one knows how to stop you.

Just do what makes you happy and the elo will come eventually. Climbing the ladder is a marathon not a sprint. If you do something that you don't enjoy just to try and gain elo all you'll wind up doing is burning yourself out on the game.

I appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Top is nightmare mode for ranked play.

You have minimal to no team presence. Your job in top is to farm up as much as possible while praying your team doesn't feed their brains out. If the enemy top screws up and you can get fed off them, neat, but don't expect that to happen consistently. And even if you do get ahead in top, three times out of five (at the very least) enemy jungle or mid will start camping the ever living crap out of you just to put you down.

Most other times your lane feels like ghost town, it's probably because the enemy is winning other lanes hard while you can do nothing but cry in your own little corner. And during those miracle games in which your ally jungle does pay attention to your lane and camps it to try and get you fed, it's no guarantee that you will be able to carry your other allies.

The enemy can just as easily pay as much or more attention to top as your jungle can and can often result in a 2 v 3+!

I'd like to note that you have every right to speak up as the support. You (hopefully. I hope you don't just build ap support. You're not a support main if you do that) are the one who keeps them alive with cc and shields, and they'd have a harder time carrying if supports weren't pulling off zone control all the time.

No, this is a recent development. I tend to use Naut, Zil, or Braum (occasionally Bard).

But in solo que B5, I build AP Mage because as i've mentioned, sometimes handing people kills isn't enough.

While certainly handing them kills isn't enough, you're not a support if you're building to deal damage. You're just a fifth damage dealer. It's like that whole "death is the best cc" joke come to life.

With respect, unless you have a viable solution, theory doesn't cut mustard. Try going Lulu in the B5 and see how it works out.

Yeah, they don't always work well with support, but if you build damage, are you supporting your team any than they're supporting you?

I don't mean to be rude. I appreciate your feedback, but you're missing the point. There's no use shielding someone that dives in on a 2v3 (with me as part of the 2) if I'm Janna. There's no use healing an ADC who hides behind me or the tower.

If I get rolling with an ADC that I feels is honestly trying and knows what they're doing, i take traditional supports. As supports, with only incidental AP. But this isn't viable in 90% of the B5 games.

But the way I see it, you give yourself a higher chance of winning should you decide to go with a real support. Yes, people can be idiots, but when things go right, it can work. Basically, the way I see it, bot lane has two types of secondary players: supports and ap carry the second

Right now the results are mixed: http://champion.gg/statistics/#?sortBy=general.winPercent&order=descend&roleSort=Support

Soraka, Janna, and Nami are pure supports.

Zyra, Brand, and Vel'Koz are not.

Sion, Zilean, Blitz, and Sona aren't harder to pin down. Sona and Zilean, while traditional supports, are often going nuke city. Blitz is an outlier, and Sion is a total mold breaker.

The lane is in transition and I think what you're seeing here is in flux between the brackets. E.g. Janna is #1 but if you take her in the B5 you'd better be a top 2% Janna player.

yeah, but support is a class meant t ogive the ally laner and team things like shields and zone control. I jsut don't like it when people take a damage champ and call it support at the drop of a hat. It should be coordinated with your team first.

RookPusher1 votes

If I have a team, I will. If I'm in there with 4 other people, i do not.

I feel like you've been burned.

I've had multiple zyra's take cs and kills when i could get them, and take the kill at the last second. Supports that just build damage help no one.

RookPusher1 votes

Agree to disagree then. While I'm all for giving my ADC kills, I've held back way too often and seem them drop the ball.

Her taking CS is inexcusable until she's using Relic charges.

I'm fine iwth the support taking a kill or two. That' sfine.

My problme is when I"m 3 levels behindthem and they take their ninth kill that I had just fired my ult at.

Support is a tough climb.

What I've learned about myself is I'm naturally better at support than any other role, and I also enjoy it more. I find it truly satisfying to carry games as support, even if your team doesn't recognize that you are the one carrying.

That being said, if I could play any other role well as I support, I'd probably go that route. It's simply easier to carry with other roles.

If you want some advice for continuing on support - look at your win rates over long periods of time. Stick to champs you have over 50% win rates with after 100 games. Learn 3-4 who can counter or successfully match most of today's popular supports & adcs. You will climb if you do this, even if it's slowly.

And when you need a break from playing the same champ over and over, go mess around in some ARAM or normals. It does wonders for soothing the grind.

Thanks, man. Dumb question - where are you finding stats on win ratio over X number of games.
