Aatrox PBE change are carefully disguised nerfs and amplify Aatrox's weakness

DarkinPrime··6 votes·2,339 views

So after 2 years we finally get some Aatrox changes. 2 years of Aatrox mains posting their ideas about what he needs, why he fails and providing Riot with good ideas.

In the end, the decided to completely ignore all of it.

This is quite mind boggling. I am doing to explain to you how these changes will render Aatrox worse than ever, and in doing so, by the time it comes to rework him, they will basically be allowed to make him into a totally different champion that resembles nothing of him now.

These changes are along the lines of the stupidity that allows decisions like Edge of Night to happen. Edge of Night is being nerfed, probably 45 second CD instead of 30, 5 second window instead of 10, and less AD. But really, why is this situation even here? What thinking allowed for such an obviously OP item to put into the game? How detached from reality are the people at Riot who come up with these ideas? It was so obviously a bad idea that it makes you wonder if they really are stupid, incompetent, or both.

Consider these champions Irelia Jax Warwick Camille Nasus , just a few of people you might see at top. Apparently its no issue that they do a combination of true damage, % of health and magic damage.

But apparently its not okay for Aatrox. Below you will see they changed the damage of his E to physical from magic. Sure it does more damage now at later levels and scales a little better off of AD. But notice what Riot has done: They decided for everyone how Aatrox can be played. They decided the item 3146 is not longer an option. They made his early harass much weaker as most top laners Aatrox faces builds item 3047 and start in the lane with more armor than magic resist.

Furthermore, Aatrox is known to have issues sticking to enemy champions. So what does Riot do? The nerfed his slow. His E is usually leveled up first. It will be leveled up 3 times by level 5, which at that point you are losing .25 seconds of slow, then .50, then .75 seconds. Sure, it slows them by 10% more, but you are losing nearly 30 percent of the duration!

Blades of Torment (E)

Cost changed from 5% current health to 30 health

Damage changed from [75/110/145/180/215 (+60% AP)(+60% Bonus AD)] to [70/115/160/205/250 (+70% bonus AD)]

Damage type changed from magic to physical

Slow potency changed from 40% at all ranks to 30/35/40/45/50%

Slow duration changed from 1.75/2/2.25/2.5/2.75 to 2 seconds at all ranks

[new effect] Now fills 20% of the Blood Well upon cast

Now lets talk about his W. But before we do, remember what everyone always said when people said that Aatrox was too squishy? They would say that Aatrox's tankiness is his sustain. Okay cool. So now that his sustain has been gutted, he is even more squishy. Yes, the new W heals more above 50 percent health than the old W, but its not going to compensate for the triple healing multiplied by masteries and spirit visage. And if you want to take advantage of the larger healing at higher health, then you are forgoing using Blood Price for the now nerfed bonus damage. Even furthermore, his W healing scaling off of bonus AD was great because Fervor of Battle increased his healing. I don't care that it doesn't cost health to use anymore, it was already weak and unlike so many other champions who have build in armor pen or crits, Aatrox doesn't have any of that. Also, nothing has been given to him for any tankiness in combat to compensate for his gutted healing. They took away his super healing (which was easily shut down by hard CC and attack speed reduction anyways) and left him with nothing unlike Olaf Nasus Riven Yasuo Fiora Pantheon and others who all enjoy built in resistances, tenacity, parries and blocks and shields.

I won't talk about his Q. Its still the same problem and no one was asking for it to do more damage. Literally no one.

So in the end, after 2 years, Riot misses the mark. Not only does he still have the same issues, they are even worse. Gutted his lifesteal with no additions to his defenses. In fact, its even worse now because his passive revive only works IF you have the blood-well full. Increased Q damage even though no one wanted or cared for that. Nerfed his E making his slow overall worse, and the damage less effective in lane.

Aatrox is now weaker, and pulled in more directions before. If you want bigger healing percents, you need to build HP, but you still need Attack speed to get the heals faster, and you need AD because hes still an auto attacker and his damage scales off of AD.

GOOD JOB RIOT. Way to royally screw this one up.

He scales better, the passive is better, really the only thing that got nerfed was his W which is the main reason he's been a champion that couldn't be made playable in the first place. I'm not even sure I'd call his W such a huge nerf for that matter since you can actually now keep it up and gain the bonus attack speed from the passive faster.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Uh. No, its not better. And even if that was true. Riot has made now the squishiest fighter who doesnt come close to dealing the kind of damage, often mixed, that other top laners do.

FantasySniper1 votes

He scales so much worse now.

The healing passive had a bonus AD ratio, which was replaced with a missing health bonus. You'd need 4200+ health to reach the same healing levels that the average Aatrox build got within the first few items, and that's without even considering how hard it will be to build attack speed when you have to stack health items.

OurLestrade2 votes

Remember when Riven had the edge mechanic? It's still early on. You can actually buy health on him now without actively gimping yourself which is good.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Yes, you can buy health so you can heal more....but wont because you wont have has much attack speed and to get the heals will be not doing bonus damage, which scales off of the AD you don't have because you built tank and attack speed. Did you even read the post?

I stopped after personal attacks against riot devs calling their changes stupid. It showed to me that you were far too emotionally vested and that you wouldn't have a clear well thought out plan. You may have, but generally speaking, usually if you have a good idea, you're not calling people stupid imo. Sure you can think what they did is stupid, but generally, if you think so you have a great idea and point as to why which when expressed will be far more convincing than throwing around 'stupid' so typically youll go with that instead of lending yourself to ad hominem logical fallacies.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Haha okay. Its a good thing you got offended for Riot and turned you brain off because of "personal attacks". Companies can do stupid things, they do it all the time. Riot is not levitating above us. Pull your panties out its bunch. I clearly gave an example of how Riot makes STUPID changes, that they then have to revert. You want me to suger coat it? Just read the post and stop being offended for everyone so easily.

Hethalean3 votes

I wasn't offended. I didn't say offended. I just said that it skyrocketed the likely hood that your post was going to be meaningless and provide nothing of substance as is pretty standard when someone starts off with logical fallacies. "Being offended" isn't the only response to everything.

Also

{quoted}

Sure you can think what they did is stupid, but generally, if you think so you have a great idea and point as to why which when expressed will be far more convincing

I never said they couldn't do something stupid, nor that they were levitating above us. I mean you're on me for not reading your 800 word essay and you couldn't even read all of my 105 word paragraph lol

DarkinPrime1 votes

"I stopped after personal attacks against riot devs calling their changes stupid. It showed to me that you were far too emotionally vested and that you wouldn't have a clear well thought out plan"

Just think about this for a second. You stopped because you based on whatever reason or experience you have that my post was going to be likely not well thought out.

I assumed based on my reason and experience that your response implies that on some level you felt the need to come to Riots defense, and that you ego gets involved whenever someone trashes someone else.

You assumed the post was worthless because of that. And because of that I didn't feel like it was worth really reading your 105 word response, since no one force to you to almost read a post and then trash the OP based on an assumption.

Are you...ugh, seriously dude. Just go away.

Hethalean2 votes

I didn't come to riot's defense. I was telling you that when you resort to ad hominem before anything that you're undermining yourself before your arguments and points even start. My ego has no stake in this at all what so ever. The post started out seeming like it wanted to be taken seriously then trashed it's own chances right at the start, so I felt like just letting you know why lots of people are going to ignore this and move on.

As for that assumption, it's a time management skill. Sure there are diamond's in the rough, but you hedge your bets and maximize your time as best you can. As for 'trashing the op', I never insulted you. At worst, from what I directly 'accused' you of being was being too emotionally vested. That's not really 'trashing' more of laying the groundwork for explaining the rest.

Where is the reason to finish? I was just letting you know why a lot of people won't even finish your post. Especially people at Riot, if your job is to read the boards for ideas, I highly doubt anyone looking for well thought out, well worded, and interesting ideas... that they'd even finish a post where ad hominem is even a thing.

Not once did I even mention my stance on Riot in this post, nor did I 'come to their defense'. I was simply trying to instruct you where you're post is going to fail to catch the attention or even keep it of a more intelligent reader looking for thought provoking reading. They're definitely going to be able to identify logical fallacies easily, and most likely are going to move on and not waste their time.

If you don't want to improve your diction so your voice can be heard, so be it. Personally, I like Aatrox, and want him to be in a better place. However, I don't play him enough to really know what is a good idea to change him nor can I even write a post suggesting improvements which is why I even came to this post in the beginning.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Dude can we cut the crap? You know god damn well that the sentence "At worst, from what I directly 'accused' you of being was being too emotionally vested" also implies "and therefore, too stupid or immature to make a coherent argument"

Furthermore, you have no context about me "Where is the reason to finish? I was just letting you know why a lot of people won't even finish your post. Especially people at Riot, if your job is to read the boards for ideas, I highly doubt anyone looking for well thought out, well worded, and interesting ideas... that they'd even finish a post where ad hominem is even a thing."

I used to post polite civil posts about Aatrox. For years. Meddler responded ONE time and used my idea on a small change. The rest of the time, no matter how nicely I worded things, the post was ignored and trashed regardless. So please spare me this whole idea that people would listen more. They won't.

Even furthermore, you said ". I was simply trying to instruct you where you're post is going to fail to catch the attention or even keep it of a more intelligent reader looking for thought provoking reading. They're definitely going to be able to identify logical fallacies easily, and most likely are going to move on and not waste their time."

Its not your god damn job to go around "correcting people" on posts that you don't even know anything about, as you freely admit. The fact that you feel compelled to explain to people how to post, while reading a post on a subject you are largely ignorant about, tells me that you are specifically looking to pick people apart and that despite what you say, you do have an ego, and that ego is what compels you to feel like other people could or should want or value your opinion on how they come across.

So, are you done yet?

Hethalean1 votes

lol yeah trying to help you was clearly a waste of time. smh can lead a horse to water, but can't make em drink. comprehension fails by op.

DarkinPrime1 votes

God damn you don't get it. No one was asking for your help. There wasn't a gun to my head when I was typing my post. I expressed exactly what I wanted to express. You talk about me lacking comprehension? Good lord you must be the most insufferable person in real life. News flash, but the world is not always aching to hear you take on everything, even though loooooooove to give your opinion on everything.

I questioned their competence based on an example. I said it makes you wonder if they are are stupid or incompetent. I didn't say they were. I said based on this and that, it sure can look that way. This is not an ad hominem attack. Stop trying to be smarter than you really are (THAT was an ad hominem attack)

I actually didn't think the changes were half-bad. They make his kit more interactive, he scales better, and his new passive is alot nicer than his old. I realize removing the E AP ratio nerfs AP Aatrox, and I don't know why Riot kept the AP ratio on his ult if they were trying to make him build more AD, but it still seems pretty good. Now, Deaths Dance actually works with your E, which is a change I really like.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Your opponent in lane is going to have ARMOR. The higher scaling on the E means nothing. The slighly lesser scaling of magic damage would do more damage in most match ups!

TheHappyReaperz1 votes

Which means buying BC on Aatrox is a good Idea. While having it magical meant it did more damage, in most matchups, it also sucked up power in his kit, scaled oddly, and did overall poor damage lategame. At least with this it scales better, and unifies the source you scale of off.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Black Clever won't help Aatrox harass and poke with he E. Most of your laning phase will involve you not having the completed item. So it means nothing.

The damage scales better on his E now, but like I said, his utility is down. You are losing .75 seconds on his slow. 2 seconds instead of 2.75. Sure you get 50% slow instead of 40% but I would rather have nearly another second of a 40% slow then only 2 seconds of a 50% slow.

TheHappyReaperz1 votes

But, his utility is up in the early game, as the duration of the slow is 2 seconds at all ranks. In regards to the slow increase, less is more. If I'm slowing you for 50% for those two seconds, its worth more to me than slowing you by 40% for an extra .75s.

Except now with the new BTRK changes it actually works quite well. You're missing the whole picture of the item changes, mastery changes and skill changes and how they will all work together.

DarkinPrime1 votes

First of all I am not. I have over 5000 ranked matches with Aatrox over the last 2 years over multiple accounts. I have a very good idea of how all the changes will work together, and none of it accounts for the fact that he is now the squishiest fighter in the game with no defensive compensation for his gutted lifesteal. His lifesteal was the reason Riot didn't give him any tankiness.

New Botrk wont change that. All the new BOTRK is going to do is made it so that you feel a deficiency in bonus AS when you buy it, which you need to proc his lifesteal every 3rd hit faster.

He is going to have the same problems with these changes---a narrow knock up window on an unreliable, easily interrupted dive, on a long cool down, and not good at sticking to enemy champions, and a kit that pulls in too many directions. He is still the same problem.

And no one is arguing with you that he's going to have those problems still. He needs a full rework but that's not going to happen for a while and these changes are meant to at least make him somewhat more playable and stop the constant buff Aatrox thread.

Are those changes a nerf? No they are a buff. Are they going to fix all his problems? No but they will make him somewhat playable.

DarkinPrime1 votes

If they don't fix any issues then there was no point. Totally unnecessary and its not a buff. I am telling you from more experience with Aatrox than you have with any other champion, and probably ever will in your life, that these changes are not good.

If the only thing these changes were for is to make him more playable and shut people up, they could have done many other things. For example, in his current state he is nearly playable and not that bad in many situations.

All Riot had to do, until the rework was this:

Increase base movement speed to 350 from 345 Increase base attack range from 125 to 150 Change "The Blood Well depletes by 2% per second if Aatrox hasn't dealt or received damage in the last 5 seconds" To "The Blood Well depletes by 1% per second if Aatrox hasn't dealt or received damage in the last 10 seconds." Add in something like "Blood charged" on his abilities, so if his blood well is full, his E would grant vision on enemies hit. and his dive would slow enemies slightly who are hit outside of the knock up area.

And thats it. That alone would have been fine.

midnight oil241 votes

I can see right there how some of your suggested changes would be pretty oppressive. He's got to build his blood pool now, which is part of his "build power" thing, but you want it to be that it would take forever to go away. He's sort of a tough champ to balance, so giving him more effects wouldn't help, it would just make him oppressive. You don't tackle his w which is what made him hard to balance.

Also, you're kind of arrogant.

I am telling you from more experience with Aatrox than you have with any other champion, and probably ever will in your life, that these changes are not good.

Okay, your grammar is horrible, and you sound like a snobby rich kid. No one wants to listen to that. Next up, don't open arguments with talking about how much you know. Makes you sound obnoxious. Third, you don't work on the balance team. I know it's hard to get this through that head of yours, but they are competent at game balance. You, in turn, are not. If you're an expert at game balance, why aren't you working at riot?

DarkinPrime1 votes

Oh really? You said "Except now with the new BTRK changes it actually works quite well. You're missing the whole picture of the item changes, mastery changes and skill changes and how they will all work together.?

Basically you OPENED up with telling me that I was missing the whole point. I responded and countered that I do see the whole picture based on X experience.

Really. They are competent at game balance? Like how poppy was OP after her rework, then they had to nerf her? Like Camille is balanced? Or like how they cant decided on how BOTRK should be?

Are you serious dude? Go away.

midnight oil241 votes

That was a different guy. I don't know much about balance myself, I just know htat we're worse at it than they are. Why don't you go work for riot?

And I could say the same to you. You're clearly not operating at full capacity, judging from how you can't even tell that my name isn't Kaioko.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Are we? Consider how when Riot released the new mastery system. Remember how immediately, on day one the entire community said that the crit mastery was going to be broken on Trynd and Yas. And it turned out it was. And Riot had to fix it. So, with no testing or data, most of us could immediately figure out it was busted, but Riot, who gets paid to do this, somehow couldn't?

midnight oil241 votes

I mean, sometimes we'll figure things out, but in general Riot has a better grasp of what's going on. In comparison to them, you are but an annoying little flea who doesn't grasp how the world works, someone who doesn't understand that they, in the world of league of legends, is a nobody who, with every word about how smart they are, just betrays their arrogance.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Haha.

I never claimed to be that smart. I claimed that most of us were smart enough to see obviously poorly thought out changes and it makes me question how they can get things that are so obvious so wrong. Want another example? When the reworked Poppy I immediately took issue with her...and just with a casual glance at her kit an stats and a few games against her, I could tell she was way too strong. And I was correct, as Riot later nerfed her. I wasn't the only one who thought this. The list can go of things Riot has done that they later had to undo or change. Nearly all of these changes that were undone were immediately spotted by the customers are bad changes. Remember when they thought it was great to get rid of Solo Que and we had to post on boards for a year straight to get them to bring it back?

Furthermore, perhaps you are the one that doesn't understand how the world works.

Riot entered the market at the right time to enjoy dominance. There are a lot of things that happen when a company is this successful this quickly. First, owners tend to start believing that most of their success is due to their genius. Their ego kicks in. And egos like to control things--such as the direction of the game even if its a direction their customers are not asking for. Due to very little competition, they operate in vacuum where their ideas seem great because they are the only ones around. Furthermore, as the company grows you have more chiefs, more people who thing they know best and want to implement their ideas. Different teams working autonomously, as Marc Merill wanted, that end up producing conflicting changes. Hence balance issues. But even beyond that, if you read Marc Merrills blog, there is an attitude he has that is very obnoxious--he doesn't understand eSports despite him wanting to expand eSports, and he will imply that the players are the ones who just don't understand how hard it is to be so successful so fast. Its the players, dontcha know, that don't understand the genius of their changes, like when they got rid of Solo Que.

Your thought process on this and me is completely out of line and out of touch with reality.

midnight oil241 votes

Ah, but I'd rather be out of touch with reality than a guy who acts like a god.

Anyway, after a variety of events tonight I'm too pissed off to keep arguing for my side, but I still stand by my views. I'm just gonna get kicked off the boards if I keep going.

DarkinPrime1 votes

Haha I act like a God? You should learn to tone down the outrageous dramic statements. Its not attractive to women.

MaeDoSan1 votes

This is not his full rework , why are you so worried ?

Hige1 votes

uhm I think you kinda forget that his costs are almost nonexistent considering he has lifesteal and a revive passive... you can use all of your kit and you'd have spent around 100 health in total ._.

Now the thing is that Aatrox was given a missing health damage, so building health could be counterproductive but aside from that, I think the kit looks really good

DarkinPrime1 votes

I'm not forgetting--its not worth giving up the triple healing under 50 percent health and the higher bonus damage just to have them not cost health. Id much rather it cost health scaling up in flat amounts and be able to have more healing and more damage.

Did you even read my post. HOW is his kit good? Riot just made the absolutely squishiest fighter who doesn't even come close to doing as much damage as may other top tier fighters.

Hige1 votes

Well, being squishy is something that drain type champions should be, for example, new warwick has a small window of damage reduction but aside from that he's really really squishy, he survives by draining his enemy and more importantly, his gap closer is his ult that has quite the long cd, Aatrox basically has Malphite's ult as his Q... Also he has an automatic guardian angel meaning that he is inherently tankier than most (he can stay in a fight for much longer because you literally have to kill him twice)

Also, the changelist is not complete apparently so... yeah, balance will happen eventually

DarkinPrime1 votes

Malphites Ult has a much loner range, an much wider area of impact, and double the knock up time and cant be interrupted. It its literally nothing like Aatrox Q, dafuck are you smoking dude? He doesn't "basically" have Malphites ult as his Q. Huge stretch.

Also, he has always had a GA. Just because he is keeping it doesn't mean he is tanky enough. It doesn't help him while he is alive and dealing damage the way other fighters an top laners tankiness help them.

Are you not aware that Riven Pantheon Jax Olaf Nasus Fiora and many others nearly all have shields, parries, block and built in resistances. Aatrox is pretty much the only one who lacks anything like that. Except sometime he get to die and then die again 3 seconds later.

Hige1 votes

he lacks all of that because his role is different from those you listed, none of those are Divers, they are tanks, skirmishers, juggernaut and slayers, Aatrox' purpose is different though you seem blinded by your own opinion so, there's nothing else to say here.

DarkinPrime1 votes

He is seen in top lane. I am comparing him to other top laners, regardless of class..and because he lacks these things, he is outclassed.

Meep Man1 votes

Furthermore, Aatrox is known to have issues sticking to enemy champions. So what does Riot do? The nerfed his slow. His E is usually leveled up first. It will be leveled up 3 times by level 5, which at that point you are losing .25 seconds of slow, then .50, then .75 seconds. Sure, it slows them by 10% more, but you are losing nearly 30 percent of the duration!

This is coming in the same patch with the BorK change that makes it slow for up to 6 seconds if you keep basic attacking someone.

Aatrox is going to be building more Juggernaut-like after these changes, I can say that. With all this in mind, I can see him having more health and such and healing for a lot more.

Ignoring the fact his Passive, a 30% guaranteed revive, is now up every 180-120 seconds, sure.

DarkinPrime1 votes

"This is coming in the same patch with the BorK change that makes it slow for up to 6 seconds if you keep basic attacking someone."

Irrelevant. Items change and sometimes go away forever. Deciding his kit is okay because at the moment an item (which everyone can also get) its around, its totally irrelevant

"Aatrox is going to be building more Juggernaut-like after these changes, I can say that. With all this in mind, I can see him having more health and such and healing for a lot more."

By the time the 5% of missing health is significant, he will be so low in health that he will be easily bursted down. And because he built tank he wont have enough attack speed to heal up fast anyways. So lets say mid game he has 3000 HP and is down to 500. A that point he will get an extra 125 HP back on his heal, plus the base values, so lets say ive leveled it 3 times...so 60 hp. And lets say with the 8% percent bonus from mastiers, youd get about 200 hp back. Dude I can get that while still in lane now under 50 percent health, around 700 heal left, and heal for more than that. He is not going to be healing a lot more.

"Ignoring the fact his Passive, a 30% guaranteed revive, is now up every 180-120 seconds, sure"

Dude, seriously? He already had a passive and and was still considered too squishy. Its not a guarantee 30 percent revive if the blood well isn't full. So it snot guaranteed now is it?

Apocalypsic1 votes

His passive scales very well with Steraks now. I'm seeing Cleaver, Steraks, Spirit visage in his future, dunno about Botrk with those changes coming in but Juggertrox build is gonna be pretty nice.

DarkinPrime1 votes

The problem with that is that he still needs lifesteal to get the heals. BOTRK is going to only give 25% now. And his passive gives 20-50% instead of the current 30-55%.

One attack speed item won't cut it, and if you dont have attack speed, by the time the 5% of missing health is significant enough to help, you will be so low on health that some ADC or Assassin or Mage will be able to burst you down.

FantasySniper1 votes

Pros:

  • Only [E] costs health now, and it doesn't scale.
  • [E] had its base stats averaged out.
  • [Q] scaling buffed.

Cons:

  • Removed the 30 - 55% passive attack speed.
  • [W] damage nerfed.
  • [E] scaling practically nerfed. (Guinsoo's)

Blood Well: You no longer have to spend health to fill it. It takes a [Q] > [E] and 3 [W] damage procs to fill it. (9 basic attacks, 6 with Guinsoo's) This is arguably less requirements to reach full blood well. The loss of the passive attack speed is a huge detriment considering how long it still takes to fill.

This is a huge nerf to Aatrox's jungle clear speed, while a minor buff to his team-fighting.

Blood Thirst: 600 missing HP covers the 30 loss in healing when it was originally tripled below half health. For every 1 bonus AD, you need another 15 missing health. The average Aatrox build has at least 100 bonus AD, so you would need at least 4200 health to achieve the same effectiveness.

The healing now has a better foundation and is more graduated, but with Aatrox's build pattern and the lack of attack speed on tank items, it is a full-on nerf no matter how you build him.

TL;DR

This is a nerf that will hit jungle Aatrox hard and the teamfight bonuses will barely outweigh the losses in attack speed and scaling.
