If you haven't played support..

EDIT: I'm not saying support is the hardest role. I'm merely saying it isn't the easiest. Support is/can be difficult just like every other role and is played differently than other roles. It might come easily to some people, or it might be hard. But to assume it is 'easy' and then crap on anyone who plays it is wrong.

Please stop trying to argue about it with a support main?

There's been quite a few support changes currently, and coming in the future. There's a lot of questions about them. A lot of support mains have been discussing the changes, and I have seen quite a few people immediately downvote and try to talk down about the support role when never having played it themselves.

What's with all this support hate?

It seems like there's this attitude that support mains who talk on the boards are just complaining and whining. Like our role is 'easy' and we have no idea what we are talking about.

Hell I even had someone try to argue with me about a support champ that used to be my main, yet they had no games as this champ. Like...I don't want to sound like a jerk, but since I've played them a lot....maybe I know a little better than you who has never even touched them?

I don't play jg, I suck at it. I'm not gonna come here to the boards and start lecturing a jg main about their role. I don't play Gangplank. I'm not gonna argue with a Gangplank main about how their champ works.

I don't want to sound mean when saying all of this but......we do know a bit about our role if we main it....maybe we know a bit of what we are talking about when discussing these changes, especially if a champ we main is being changed?

This could go for anyone really, not just supports....don't argue with someone over their main role/champ if you've never played it...

Support as a role in general is pretty much the black sheep of the other roles of the game, so of course there's always misconceptions of it everywhere. Such as how "easy" it is. Do you have to learn all kinds of combos or even know how to drop your head on the keyboard quickly? Not necessarily, but do you need decision making skills? Certainly. To many people, difficulty of something is measured on how well someone presses buttons and not how well someone can make decisions and actually not fuck up.

Yes, there are a good deal of smarter support mains, but like every other role, there's always those stupid and loud ones that seems to get the most attention and praise. No, it is not always your fault and that there are always shit that you can't control, but that doesn't mean you're free from all faults. Just no.

I just want to point out there are these misconceptions in every role

Top : Just farm get tanky and TP, easy

Jungle : You lost your lane? Its the easiest gank in the world but jungle is bad, jungle is so easy mine is bad

Mid : Yasuo Zed Ryze Vladimir Leblanc "OMG wow no skill champs, your bad"

Adc : Just fucking right click, its so easy

Athenes Lulu4 votes

Other roles' main goal: kill shit, do damage, or engage.

Support's main goal: wait, you do neither of them?

This is why people favor tanky engage supports because they are more similar to what other roles could do: engage.

Because of that support in general is commonly misconcepted more often than other roles.

I'm a support main, when I play a different role, whoever ends up being our support tries to argue that they can still sup without item 2049 whether they go AP Lux ("support who wanted to be mid") or tank Blitzcrank (picks up items like item 3190 item 3800 item 3050 item 3401 but refuses to get sightstone for some reason). It frustrates me so much that people think that since it technically falls under the term "meta" that there is an option to go off-meta.

I'm a support main myself, and I'm not a very good ADC player (I'm bad even by bronze standards), but from time to time when I've got to play adc, I really only have two requests to my support. I really don't care who you play or what you build as long as:

  1. You start item 3301 /item 3302 /item 3303 so there's no fighting for CS
  2. _You please buy a item 2049 _
Wolfeur1 votes

I usually start gold gen then rush sightstone then boots and tier 2 gold gen and then it depends on the game: new item, tier 3 gold gen (I honestly never liked the "eye"-line) or mobi boots.

Glory ln Death1 votes

Depends on the game - some games I'll rush sightstone, others I'll go for 2nd tier gold gen and maybe even boots first. It just depends on how active their jungler is - is he ganking a lot? Are we pushing our lane, or are we pushed to our tower? Is their mid able to roam? A lot of times a pink ward and your trinkets are enough to make it through most of the early game without a sightstone. Once people start grouping up for objectives and teamfights, you'd better have a sightstone, though.

I'm so happy when I first back with 1300 gold => item 2049 + item 3097 / item 3096 / item 3098

Sighstones are very important. Not only do they create less deaths, more kills, more control over the map, and more objectives, but they also keep you awar.

More damage will not help you as much as wards and people don't ever ward enough.

I play Nautilus support a lot; he doesn't build damage. But if you use some of your money on a sightstone, then he gets extremely far behind in his tanking role. To be honest, sightstone is not as vital to the support role as a lot of people believe as often intuition can tell you or your allies where the enemies are. In the case of my ranked games, I find pings to be much much better at telling my teammates where to go and where not to go.

It's also not a very good idea on your part as a support to simply assume your teammates will not use their trinkets. People are often smarter than you make them out to be.

Naut used to be my go to tank support. I play mostly poke supports but tank supports have always been hard for me (which is ironic because I also used to main top and play tanks).

I do eventually build sightstone on him but not until I finish my support item.

I always get sightstone as a support and use all its charges before backing, but it kinda annoys me how people think the support is the only person responsible for warding. I'll see other roles just not ward, and then later someone will say "we have no wards" (and I've actually had the blame for this put on me before even though I was warding the whole time ._. )

Now a lot of people do ward and that's good, but some people neglect it because 'it's the support's job'

All I want out of my support is vision, Get a Sightstone, 2 pinks, and a red trinket, Ward so I can back off in time to stay alive or not get damaged and waste the enemy teams time. I don't trust supports that I'm not pre-made with so I always act like i'm in a 1v2, Just please for the love of god I need a sighstone for the wards, my trinkets already on cooldown.

getting told that support is harder than top is kind of irritating. most support mains think warding is the hardest in the world but have no idea what top laners go through on a daily basis. they dont have someone holding their hand with a heal to make sure they dont fuck up.

so the shit you're saying goes for everyone. not just support main hate.

QjTHqo3RTq13 votes

Nobody ever said top was easier than support, but its not like support is the easiest role. On the note of warding, placing down the ward isnt difficult, but deciding where to ward warrants more thought than clicking iceborn gauntlet in the shop. Do you ward dragon for a teamfight, baron so they cant sneak it under your nose, top side so top can split and get some reaction time, and so on. There's thought involved in the support role, as im sure top does too, though im yet to find it

Hey another top main here, with my secondary main being support. Wanna give my 2 cents. Support is definitely the easiest role to just plop yourself into if you are bad (Please don't stop reading here, I have more to say) You grab a gold gen item and you try to stick to the most fed carry lategame (and if you are lucky that ended up being your adc) but just because it has the lowest barrier to entry does not mean its the easiest role (nor will I say what I think is the easiest role because I think you shouldn't really talk shit on what you don't do) there really is a ton of depth to the role though. I think too much credit is given to warding, that is you can argue however much how strategic your wards are but honestly more often than not if you aren't in lane you try to go for the closest chokepoint that people go through and the nearest objective to ward, ideally you expect the other major objective to be covered by the other laners. But I think people don't focus on the real stuff supports do, usually in some way shape or form they have a way to catch an enemy (There are fringe cases like soraka but in general) and good usage of these abilities to get the players around them is hugely important. What can your adc do to keep someone still? Not much, if you don't catch the enemy unless they make a dumb attack you aren't going to get ahead. The support (and jungler sometimes too) have the responsibility to make sure the carries get fed, most of the time the support is most capable to get the adc fed but the truly good supporting is when you can also translate your advantage into getting another lane fed (typically mid) of course every game is different, sometimes mid gets fed and helps bot, sometimes jungle gets both fed, sometimes bot helps mid, it all depends on the situation but the support is like a jungler with the sole purpose of improving their team (junglers also have to worry about becoming strong themselves, something more on the backburner for a support) I guess really when you come down to it the support is kind of the jungler with even more of a focus of making sure everyone else on the team is good.

Though you also were extremely dismissive of toplane which while the other guy is kind of an asshole. If you think all there is to top is buying item 3025 you are pretty unknowledgeable about the role as a whole. First of all a good toplaner adjusts their build depending on the game, I won't lie there was a period of sunfire iceborn where that was just "what you got" but that was a period of poor balance for the lane. Top has an incredible amount of thought depending on the champion too in my opinion and probably the most flexibility of "what you want" out of your lane. You can pick for splitpushing and trying to keep 1-2 people out of the fight at all times to deal with you, creating space for your team, you can pick a teamfight champion like malphite where your goal is to be the front line of the team, start good fights and sometimes lead objectives even more than the jungler (possibly a symptom of being taken more seriously than a support even if they can fill a similar role in this case) they could pick the niche damage carry, which can be broken off into splitpushing even more or even trying to get the rest of their team fed not unlike a support, there really is an extreme amount of variety to the role, something I wish to see more of with support, as right now your categories for support are either (imo), protect the adc by keeping them healthy and the enemies away, or protect the adc by killing the enemy and getting them strong enough to protect themselves, or category 3, be thresh and do both for no reason :^)

I could write a lot more about both roles and why they both have a lot of strategy any why the OC is an ass or why you came of kinda like an ass, or maybe even identify how I probably came off like an ass but I think I got my point across.

TLDR Both Top and Support are smart beautiful sexy women roles that have a lot to offer.

To be honest, top is pretty no skill, since its mostly wet noodle fights. Even bad players can play a tank, not push, not get caught, not get punished.

Shibe the Doge1 votes

Ah if only that were the case though, first of all top really only develops into a noodle fight when neither party manages to kill the other early on, something that a good toplaner very much should try to do because a couple kill advantage can dumpster a lane. And yeah it isn't always gonna happen, sometimes you have the maokai vs malphite and unless the malphite goes roa first item Q max hail mary to kill the maokai it probably won't happen, but if bad players could "Play a tank, not push, not get caught, and not get punished" than it wouldn't happen, its easy to say "play defensive" but really unless the matchup is an inherent you will die if you are at your wave matchup than playing defensive is usually the wrong choice. You don't want to feed your opponent, but playing aggressive enough to draw the jungler toplane is a huge benefit (that often will go unnoticed) to your team. A jungler spotted top is one that can't stop the bot snowball, or the dragon take. And the diversity of the toplane cast means that wet noodle fests only really happen during a super stale meta, a jax/fiora/darius isn't gonna sit top and go, darn my opponent is tanky guess nothing is gonna happen in lane, no they fight. I have no idea what game you are playing if your top is "mostly a wet noodle fest". Also personal opinion time since I don't play much mid, but outplaying your opponent mid is, get them out of position and blow them up before they can blow you up. Outplaying in top is numerous smart trades until your opponent either has to stay back and not farm and sometimes even get xp, back or if they try to step up taking advantage and knowing your exact numbers to kill them. In top more often than not you don't have the luxury of extremely overkilling someone with your "burst" it comes down to knowing thresholds and exploiting them. But again I don't play much mid so I am pretty biased in seeing top trading as more complex than mid trading.

Yeah, that only works in gold 5, silver, bronze. Having a jungler come top in those leagues is great because they suck so bad you can probably 1v2 them and get an easy double.

but its not like support is the easiest role

It's the easiest role out of the 5

QjTHqo3RTq2 votes

Can I put this way? Top lane has largest abundance of champions who only do ONE thing. Support has about two of those, blitzcrank and soraka. Top lane has Singed, Malphite, Pantheon, Aatrox, Gragas, Kennen, Olaf, Yorick, Xin Zhao, Volibear, Ryze, Tryndamere, and Swain. Just off the top of my head of braindead champs I hate seeing.

Shibe the Doge2 votes

A lot of the champions you named do more than "one thing" and such a statement is kind of flawed because that requires an imaginary definition of what "one thing means". Easy example I can think of is Malphite only doing "one thing" I assume that you mean starting fights, but he doesn't just start fights he can also be a counterinitiator or even a bodyguard against a person who dives on the carry. Is that one thing supposed to be teamfighting? Teamfighting is not a one dimensional thing and really shouldn't be treated as such, and the beauty of top champions is build flexibility, yeah you could build full tank and your role really does largely boil down to be there for the fight so it goes well, but a pickup of a zzrot, an iceborn or other items to help clear waves even a champion with poor innate waveclear can still splitpush with success.

I will concede some champions like singed really do only do one thing, splitpush and be a nusiance. But most champions cannot be defined as one dimensional unless you don't understand the champion (which isn't necessarily a big deal unless you start claiming facts about something out of your experience range, the whole point of the original post)

People are so quick to get hostile on these boards I swear. Everyone wants to defend their own lane because it will make them feel more important. NEWS FLASH PEOPLE, EVERY SINGLE LANE AND ROLE IS CRUCIAL TO THE GAME.

Every single lane has a different set of goals.

Top is either a bruiser/carry or a tank, both want to get strong enough to be able to plunge headfirst into the enemy team and cause complete havoc, usually forcing the focus onto themselves to keep their team safe, they also have to worry about keeping an eye on the Rift scuttler and Baron, and 9 times out of 10 they need to have amazing map awareness in order to tp during a fight and turn the tides.

The Jungler has to worry about optimal jungle clear times, warding objectives, watching out for invades, and picking off enemies. Whether you pick an assassin/tank/fighter/mage it doesn't matter the goal of jungling is the same. You have to try to get youself fed off the jungle mobs as well as keeping an eye on every lane trying to decide who you can help when. "Oh the enemy mid laner is pushing and my mid laner has all cd's up, good time to gank for a kill". Also it isn't always the junglers fault for not ganking, maybe you're pushed, maybe your jungler is low from clearing camps and recalling, maybe he's behind and would only give your laner a free kill anyways, theres a lot of thought for the jungler to put into a gank.

Mid is the lane that usually decides the FLOW of a game. For example, if I'm losing Mid and my laner takes a tower, since Mid is the shortest of all the lanes the enemy team is going to decide to start grouping a LOT sooner to push that lane as opposed to any other lane losing towers. Early game mid has the most entries to the lane so its easier to gank for both teams, so mid usually has to be on constant alert for ganks, both from their team and the enemy team. Both mid laners are usually carries, so the focus is to get as fed as quickly as possible so try to snowball yourself, and depending on the champion, start ganking other lanes while at the same time trying to keep your enemy shut down.

ADC is all about farm and proper positioning. A fight can get turned in an instant if the ADC is the first to die, they have absolutely massive single target damage and the best siege potential out of any other role. The job of an ADC is to stay in the backline and let your team try to distract the enemy so you can start mowing them down. Early game is all about CS, that's the biggest concern of any ADC, if you can't cs properly you'll never be any good in the role.

The Support is either a beefy tank with pretty hefty cc, an AP caster with decent poke, or some type of healer, usually a mix of these. The support's job early on is to both keep the enemies off their ADC and engage the enemy for their ADC to try to get them fed. The support has to worry about proper warding, clearing wards, and has to have extreme decision-making skills. A support can usually turn a fight by using their abilities at the perfect time (EX: a Sona holding off on that ult until she can hit every enemy in a teamfight or a Taric using his ult and stuns just at the right time to save his team).

TLDR: Every role compliments another role in this game, thus every role is equally important as every other role. There is no "most important" role and no role is inherently harder than any other, they all just require a different mindset, playstyle, and have a completely different set of priorities.

Wouldnt say all are equally important. Think about it this way friend, If someone HAD to DC who would you pick? which role would you choose to disconnnect for the rest of the game? I'm sure you could win 4 v 5, but which is the least useful role among the 5.

Arthimetes1 votes

I wouldn't choose one to dc because no matter who it was your team is at a massive disadvantage.

Top would most likely ruin your frontline and open up the enemy team to your squishies

Jungle would give the enemy jungler complete map control and handicap your own team due to no ganks

Mid would most certainly remove your biggest source of aoe damage or single target damage, depending on champion

Adc would virtually remove your teams seige potential and teamfight power

Support would likely remove your biggest source of any cc or healing, your vision control, and put bot into a 2v1 resulting in the enemy adc getting fed early.

So again, none of the above.

redfeenix1 votes

Edit: you MUST choose 1 person to dc for the rest of your game. Its your promotion series. Who do you pick and why. you MUST pick someone.

Arthimetes1 votes

fine since we're playing a child's game

I'll pick me. I'll take the bullet so others don't have to.

redfeenix1 votes

but what role lol.

Okay so your argument that all 5 roles are equally improtant. I'm saying that its not true, there is always 1 role thats worse.

In my case I would dc my mid laner. Support can play mage/Ap . Therefore mid laners not as important to winning (4 v 5).

What about you? are you sitll gonna maintain that all roles are equal? who would piss you off the most if they dc'd. the least?

Arthimetes1 votes

I wouldn't get pissed at them, I mean it would be annoying if it was a blatant ragequit, but not pissed.

There is no ROLE that's better or worse, player skill defines their role's success. Every ROLE is crucial, it's why they're all there.

What role on my dcing? Whatever role I happen to be playing that game I suppose.

Some diamond 5 0lp jungle main tried smack talking me during season 5 about the mid lane and champ balance for mid lane when all he did if he couldn't jungle was play ahri and Diana with a losing winrate. Needless to say he got embarrassed when everyone else who read our argument agreed with me

In short: maining a role doesn't make your judgment on the subject infallible.

No, but it should protect you from

Vayne: Gosh, you stupid Muthaf*****, build Zeke's first, not ____! Why do I always get stupid supps?!?! Brand: Dude, I'll get there. Lemme get my core first, then I'll build whatever you want Vayne F*** this, I'm out

I had a Soraka game where I flashed engaged the enemy and peeled healed for our Ez at the same time. I felt so proud and typed in chat,"yw."

His response was," your supposed to do that."

I probably would have responded the same way as Ez to be honest. You were expecting praise or acknowledgment for doing your job. It's like when Ez gets a kill and then says "yw" in chat to you guys expecting praise. He's just not the type to give praise easily and I don't think he should be demonized for that.

Supports can carry the game sometimes, especially on unconventional AP supports like Brand. But those are just cancer to me.

It's sad when so many people can agree that the way to carry as a support is to go play an ap champion with such high damage that even on a support's paycheck you can still outdamage everyone... Nothing against you, more the system. I just really hate that full damage support is the only recognized way to carry as one without a highly coordinated team (since it's still hard to carry with a decent team).

i actually think that support brand is abit worse now if you cant get his passive proc off . . . BUT IF YOU GET HIS PASSIVE PROC OFF HOLY SHIT support brand is so stupid. % max health burn and then a aoe blast . . . its so fucking scary

I've carried as Morgana with only one AP item after FQC. (Rylai's) People just don't realize you can "carry" be constantly making picks and netting your team a few kills without giving any up.

You can also carry by getting good engages while providing your team with huge heals and shields.Sona Janna

Sad thing is, you can be amazing at support, but if your team doesn't use the advantages you create, carrying will be difficult.

You could land that one-in-a-million hook as Thresh, but if your team doesn't follow up, it will be the same as trying to hook a 6-stack cho that's standing still, but missing.

(Mainly talking about lower ELOs here, I know this doesn't happen nearly as much a bit higher up the ladder)

Its because if a support main gets stuck with idiot teammates they cant do anything. If they go ap support then they can face roll the other team before they crush your dumbass teammates.

I don't understand why "carry" has been purely damage-focused. Braum can carry with CC and protection, Leona can carry the same way a Malphite can, a well-placed Wish can turn the entire team-fight around.

The problem is that most people are too focused on the damage dealt and don't bother to notice what allowed/denied them their damage.

They can carry, but not alone. They're a catalyst for their team's success.
