"If You're a Support Buy Sightstone"

Çhåryzård··107 votes·4,705 views

Ok, I'll buy sightstone, I always do, but..

  • I get 3-4 wards with sightstone.
  • I can only have a max of **3 visionwards **on the map and then 1 red ward.
  • Every single one of you gets a FREE item 3340 at the start of the game that, guess what? You can actually use to ADD MORE THAN 3 WARDS TO THE MAP!
  • This may sound crazy but at level 9 you can actually turn this into a item 3363 if youre a squishy carry so that you can place wards from farther away. This makes it so that you don't have to get close to the bush and risk being surprised. Even better? These last infinitely until being destroyed and DOES NOT COUNT AGAINST YOUR WARD LIMIT UNLIKE MY SIGHTSTONE! :O
  • Reminder that I can only have 3 wards on the ENTIRE MAP at a time, and then the 1 red trinket.
  • It is **COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE **for me to ward everything with my sightstone. If you want the entire map warded you need to pitch in.
  • There is 0 reason you should have 5 or 6 wards placed by 30 minutes.

I've been seeing a lot of "if ur support buy sightstone" threads lately and honestly, it's extremely annoying as a support player myself.

I do buy sightstone

But a lot of the people that complain FAIL TO WARD ENOUGH THEMSELVES.

I CANNOT ward the entire map, I can only have 3 WARDS AT A TIME WITH THE ITEM YOU WANT ME TO BUY.

KEY WORD IN THAT IS "BUY"

I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY WARDS

YOU GET THEM FOR FREE.

NO EXCUSE TO NOT USE THEM.

As I like my support Janna with all three of the items that build out of Aether Wisp. Janna : item 3113 >>> item 3504 item 3285 item 3100 .

Unfortunately, I've come to realize that in a typical game, by the time I'm able to afford them, the opportunity to effectively use them has passed. I've conceded the need to buy more effective, budget items to let me effectively contribute throughout the whole game.

My Heartshaker10 votes

item 3504is kind of sleeper OP right now. Most support mains tend to rush ardent especially if you're with a hyper carry AD.

Tulare7 votes

It's my first real item on Janna, but I follow it with item 3107 now. Most of the time the game ends before I get anything else, which kind of underscores the point. If the game ends while all I have built is item 3096 item 3504 item 2049 item 3107, it's not going long enough to justify much more expensive builds. If it goes past that point, I will sometimes start building item 3285 but I almost never try to justify item 3100 anymore. Only if we're winning a lot or the game is going super long and I have money burning a hole in my pockets.

I tend to sit on item 3114 until I get Locket. Redemption is nice, but I personally find Locket to be better.

I have been getting censer first item on Taric almost every game since the first time I tried it on 2/8/17.

I looked through my match history to find the exact date.

You mainly play Karma, Sona, and Nami. You're not the person those threads are aimed at. They're targeted at the people (often autofilled) who play mages in the bot lane, and build full damage without even bothering with sightstone.

And I'm saying that a lot of the people that complain in the first place fail at warding themselves.

I've gone Lux Velkox and Zyra support before, depending on the lane I prioritize the damage first and then the sightstone because it gives us better control of the lane if the enemy is poked down.

Are there supports that decide they'll go full ap? Yea, there are.

But most supports, no matter who they are going, take some form of sightstone. What people don't realize is that we have to pay for those wards, it takes up an item slot if you choose not to combine it into the 1 item and really doesn't provide much statwise except some health, and we can still only place 3 wards at a time.

It's not like buying sightstone is gonna magically ward up the entire map, we still need some contribution from the rest of the team.

Zielmann3 votes

Oh, that's definitely true. But just because those people don't contribute (or contribute insufficiently) doesn't mean their observation that their support should be buying a sightstone is invalid.

Yes, the support should get a sightstone. Yes, the whole team should be contributing to vision. Both are true.

And regarding other people contributing, everybody should be buying and placing control wards regularly, too.

Screw ap supports. I support camille. The shielding is crazy on top of her passive lol

Arakadia2 votes

What additional shielding is there besides her passive?

Moonfall Saber3 votes

item 3190 item 3053 item 3401 plus if you build a item 3107 it makes them all stronger

Ah okay.

'Omg this support doesn't ward!'

Has 3/3 placed. I check the scoreboard. Two charges on warding trinket. No, those threads and comments are NOT only directed at mage supports that just don't ward.

inb4 'you're just not warding where you should be if people are still complaining!' I have three wards to place. Do I constantly place one at objectives like Baron, or do I ward along the lanes so that YOU are protected from being flanked while you push? Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

No, I'm not fucking counting control wards right now. That takes up an item slot with no recharge.

Dale Wardark11 votes

I play top lane a lot and for the first 15 minutes I lament the fact that I don't have more opportunities to use regular wards and can only have one control ward.

Ark Sorcerer7 votes

Sometimes the jungler will ward you up. I tend to give a control ward to my top laner to assist them with vision, especially if I cannot gank for a time being. Helps a lot.

True. Sometimes the psychological effects of having a ward is enough to deter the enemy jungler

It does. Wanted to gank top but a control ward was placed so know they are aware I am here; leaving me no option but to destroy the ward and leave. In which case, that top laner will place their own ward. Me personally, I usually replace the control ward.

Mhihnj1 votes

if you know that they got a control ward you can pretend to leave and try a lane gank instead

Ark Sorcerer1 votes

Granted that is a possibility. Leave to only come back 10 seconds layer. It is how the enemy top laner reacts is the problem. They can be on guard for the next 45 seconds and play safer to their tower or immediately ward while my own top laner is still lane.

The former is a patience thing, wasting time. 20 seconds sure... 45... egh.... getting too long. The latter is an issue how long it takes my laner to get to the river to help kill the enemy laner. Not so much a valid one as a trust issue on follow up.

I think I'll start hacking the game so I can break past the warding limit and place that 4th vision ward

Explain? Or did you not read my post?

You can place 3 vision wards. You place the 4th and one dies, meaning you can only have 3 at a time. I'm saying I'm going to hack the game so I can place the 4th one without it dying. I include red wards in the post and say I can put 1 down ALONG WITH the 3 vision wards, but I still can' place 4 vision wards at a time.

Is it really that hard to understand?

Imagine what it was like when these noobs had to spend gold to buy a single ward.

At least in those days the item 2055 was invisible. item 3341 wasn't a thing then, you had to catch them with a item 3649 or something like that and either get lucky or know where they were planted. It was fun. The fog of war contained a terror that has not been known on the Rift since. There were no vision plants, no bomb plants, no honeyfruit. Traveling upriver ended your life 9 times out of ten.

Stillname4 votes

"Warding is a team effort" also applies to more than just everyone should ward.

If an area of the map is blank a support can't just go ward that by themselves you have to go as multiple people or get picked off one by one.

Truly Prideful3 votes

I wish everyone would play support for a while at some point, it helps build better warding habits. I mained support for a long time and now I generally outward anyone without a sightstone each game. Unfortunately I've been getting an increasing number of sightstone-less supports lately, dark maps are scary.

It's funny when people think they can dictate how others play. Support doesn't have to buy sightstone and flaming them only makes it worse.

If you dont build sightstone on support. Your doing it wrong. (unless your a mage support building item 2301)

BattleMan692 votes

There is no right or wrong. When I play brand i go straight for frostqueens and it works just fine

Bwuceleeroy1 votes

works for you maybe, but you're fucking over your adc to make yourself feel better

Miku Append3 votes

I think you kinda missed the point of people asking supports to buy a item 2049 . They're talking about the auto-fills and kids who think going Lux , Brand , Annie , or any other mage for that matter, as a support is some brilliant idea (hint; it's not, it just pisses your team off). Believe me, there's nothing more infuriating than seeing a Lux support rushing item 3089 instead of a item 2049 .

Resolution1 votes

From someone who plays an insane amount of Brand support; I normally get praised for picking him late game. It's very rare I ever see my ADC complaining about that choice. Just because it annoys you doesn't make it a bad idea/nor makes everyone else mad.

Mhihnj1 votes

I don't see the problem with playing lux, annie, brand support. As long as it positively impacts the game, i am fine with it.

Sure no problem. As long as they do their vision job....

there we go, now you are complete XD

######im just saying this i totally agree with you, i may not Play support as a main role but i get autofilled a lot lately, so i end up doing my best to ward but my best isn't enough in a 5v5 game with only 3 wards and a vision ward

Noxian Pride1 votes

Off-topic but the preview to your gif made me concerned you would eat a ban.

DoktorKaiser2 votes

Yes that is all true but I still believe that not buying sightstone on support should be considered trolling or inting and bannable if not permanently. Its just 1 fucking item JUST BUY IT FFS !!!

Tulare14 votes

The whole notion of support as a low-income, utility-oriented role is a construct of the metagame. It's generally agreed that it's most efficient for the support role to have a sightstone but by no means does that make it a mandatory buy exclusively for support. You might disagree with how your support pursues the role but that is NOT a reportable offense. This is no different than, for example, somebody playing a crit-oriented build on their marksman instead of a lethality build. They're making the tactical choices that they think are right for the team.

I happen to agree that vision is crucial and I understand the dynamics that make it most effective for the support player to assume that responsibility. Nonetheless, the game permits supports not to buy Sightstone because it is a valid, if questionable choice. Any other player, concerned about the absence of vision, can build a Sightstone themselves. You're concerned that the purchase will set back your power spike and the enhancement of your champion's unique kit? So is your support player.

OHminus2 votes

I would actually say not buying sightstone is akin to the marksman buying cleaver first. Yes, it can be done, and it may work, but in general it's a setback.

Tulare1 votes

I agree with you, don't get me wrong. Buying Sightstone first, or nearly first, is probably the most effective choice a support can make. The metagame may be fluid but it isn't arbitrary. There's a reason why Sightstone is such a popular choice. Nonetheless, the dude I was talking to was taking it way too far. Suggesting a 14-day ban for not taking it is ludicrous.

Every adc i have played with so far from unranked to plat 3 has place a single digit number of wards, even the enemy adc.
