list of shen's W drawbacks

Ahristocats··53 votes·4,637 views

-long cooldown -short aoe which means that his allies will be forced to stand in an area like Sion 's Q Nunu ulti -is an area which means that champions like LeeSin Gragas Alistar Rammus Volibear Singed Skarner will be able to move the target out of the zone -doesn't dodge on hit effect spells like mystic shot

despite all of those drawbacks, it last 1.75 seconds while Braum shield protect better the adc and last 4 seconds, same for Yasuo

Don't forget that in order to position the area near his allies he has to use his Q near them, thus wasting his main damage and energy restoration spell.

Meanwhile Yasuo protects from everything except melee autoattacks with no drawbacks for more than double the duration. And Shen's supposeed role is to protect people here.

I like this mans fancy hat, i do say he seems like a most excellent source of various odds and ends.

TehNACHO2 votes

I'd say a long cooldown is quite the meaningful drawback.

Especially seeing that, unlike Shen, Yasuo almost can't really appreciate CDR in many of his builds.

yasuo doesn't need 2 windwall, 1 negate an adc for 4 sec

TehNACHO10 votes

If a single Wind Wall is all it takes to negate the ADC, Yasuo's team either has no front line tanks/fighters or the ADC in question is a retard.

Not everything at all. Just projectiles. Viktor's 2nd Q, Malz's entire kit (maybe Q sideways is a projectile?), Fiddle's W and Q, Cho's Q+W, Nunu's R... they all pass through

Champion Skin1 votes

Well all those things also go through Shen's W except maybe Victors empowered Q auto attack

You examined one spell. Shen has 3, including his ultimate, that he can use to provide peel or protection.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

About your comment regarding having to use his Q... Yeah, he does have to do that, but let us look at a couple scenarios:

A) Shen is laning against Olaf, and has a creep advantage. Olaf walks forward to take a range creep. Now Shen taunts + q to engage a trade (or he can Q then taunt if the blade was behind olaf, same result though) now olaf cant fight back with autos for the risk of shen popping w and negating his ability to fight. In this situation, Shen has presented a real threat with his W.

B) Later in this same game, Olaf is posing a large threat to adc ashe, and ally Lissandra + Thresh can't do much to help her since he ignores their cc. Thresh can taunt backwards across olaf when he dives Ashe (cc not important here this is all about positioning) thus hitting him with Q AND POSITIONING HIMSELF FOR W ON ASHE.

As a mage player, I can't wait for all of the enemy team to get in that small area to prevent auto attack damage lol Orianna Syndra Lux Anivia Brand

anivia and syndra doesn't do as much aoe damage as ori/lux/brand

WarlordTim2 votes

True, but Anivia's Q detonation is pretty close to Shen's w radius, so that kinda counts.

Biffolo1 votes

Not even counting her q. She just presses R. Aoe slow chunk.

WarlordTim2 votes

As well as death to their ADC's attack speed. I just made good use of that tooltip last game.

Champion Skin1 votes

Also attack speed slows are a lot stronger then they look because it is off total attack speed So 20% attack speed reduction cuts AA DPS by 20%

WarlordTim3 votes

Amen, brother. We have glorious Orianna ults in our futures.

Don't forget Annie Galio Illaoi MissFortune Sona Yasuo Viktor Vladimir Morgana Malphite Leona I'm sure there's other people that absolutely love the enemy team grouping in a small area.

A smart Shen we protect the squishy ADC above the more tanky counter parts. With a little common sense, I think this ability could be really useful, especially during laning.

Short duration + protection against AA isn't that great.

Better if he could Attach it to an ally or himself and dodge all AA for 2/2.25/2.5/2.75/3 seconds

if you change it to one ally but increase the duration, it's far better than on 5 people with 1 second, grouping 5 allies in a 200 radius is a bad idea

Champion Skin1 votes

It might not be that bad of an idea if the enemy team is something like Tryndamere top Master Yi Jungle Yasuo Mid (though him landing the third Q would be pretty bad) Vayne ADC Tahm support (because he has no AoE CC or anything like that)

Sire Hippington6 votes

you forgot to mention that it only apears around the spirit blade, and his means to move that around are VERY limited.

Kitten of Evil4 votes

I suspect its intended use is not to clump up your team and protect them all, but rather to spread out as much as is necessary, with your team's AP and/or AD carry inside the dodge area.

Jorencice2 votes

^This. Let them blow every single aoe ult on just the adc.

While your team ahnilates their squishys because everyone is tunnel visioning on the zone.

except that the adc is the primar source of damage in late game

Kitten of Evil3 votes

Your team will also have other peelers, I'd hope.

At any rate, my point was that people are misinterpreting this ability. It isn't meant to create an "entire team, hide here" box. It's meant to shield your primary damage dealers from their primary damage dealers. Your ADC or APC dodging 3 or 4 enemy ADC auto-attacks can save them literally 1,000 HP late-game.

Champion Skin1 votes

Wait... isn't there usually some tanks/front liners between the carries which usually makes it difficult for the carries to just walk up and start attacking each other?

It would be nice if his W attached the Spirit Blade to an ally or himself, which could carry the dodge zone around.

But I think the biggest problem is it has a stupidly big cooldown for how much protection it brings. It should either last longer or have a smaller cooldown.

carrying the spirit blade would remove some counterplays,it's better if we increase the strength of something than if we remove some weaknesses

what's the best? low cooldown or long duration?

Zarkkast1 votes

Maybe not carrying it, but make it so he can command the spirit blade to a target location with his W?

World Ender1 votes

Look at Shen's old W, Feint. It shielded him for about 200 damage at max rank only on himself. Now, he has more of a team oriented ability which can block auto's of any damage (imagine blocking a Vayne's true damage, Jhin's 800+ damage autos and a Yasuo crit for everyone in the circle, at the same time.

It honestly does almost the same thing by blocking damage, but it's better for your team or in late game scenarios where carries do massive damage with their autos. Sure, there are drawbacks, but all skills have drawbacks.

I'm a Shen main, and I honestly love this change. It allows Shen to be even more team focused than before, and that's always where most of his power came from. His old Q and W were bland and didn't really help his team, they were more oriented towards his solo laning phase. By shifting most of his solo power to his new Q and passive, they freed up another skill for team-oriented play, which is fantastic.

op isn't asking for shen to have his old spells, but to increase the duration of his W, and don't think that his W will block a lot of damage, because a lot of champions can do damage with their spells those who can't like Vayne will be countered by shen

Can't Vayne just E her target out of the area though?

Edit: not as easy/safe as it sounds of course, just wondering about a hypothetical situation.

true

ZyniX1 votes

Yeah but he loses his 50% damage reduction on taunted enemies now and it will likely be near impossible to set up your w beforehand to taunt enemies inside it for the same effect. He also loses dueling power from his old passive as well as sustain and no ranged q makes his csing harder. Before getting sunfire you will probably lose your tower if you try to back or ult from getting pushed in so easily.

Spells should be designed with counterplay and not a "click to win teamfight 100% of the time".

Biffolo2 votes

Your counterplay is displace them, bait it out and attack while it is down, hit them with some spells and not autos, have your tanks cc the fuck out of them and wait until it drops to slaughter them, among a few other things.

WarlordTim1 votes

That's what us mages of the world are for, friend. Who needs auto attacks when I know where the enemy adc will be standing for the next 2 seconds?

TallyZrg1 votes

True though I think this spell was designed to be used in lane mostly with the removal of feint and vorpal blade, and in team fights when someone like a Jax, Yasuo, [insert AA Champion here] flanks the backline to delete the ADC.

The counterplay being that mages give zero fucks about 100% dodge as they rain down firey magic hell on the zone.

Also nearly 2 seconds lasts a lifetime in a teamfight. Think of how long a Morgana binding lasts and how it feels. Granted the duration is a little over half the duration of a Morgana binding, but will still feel like ages in game I suspect.

the counterplay here is to move them out of the zone, or use the zone to destroy them Malphite Illaoi Karthus
it should not be "just wait few seconds because it doesn't least a lot of time"
