The Mid Lane Trifecta Strikes Again!

Y'all know what it is. Since mid lane became the AP lane, Riot's crappy balance has lead to 3 champions completely crowding out other picks in the mid lane; from Diana Orianna TwistedFate to Fizz Yasuo Ziggs, and even supports like Janna Lulu Soraka have joined in on making mid lane boring and hopeless.

Numerous trifectas later, we've reached season 5's trifecta: Katarina Leblanc Zed.

The balance reason why these 3 champs are crowding everyone out? The ungodly nerfs to mana mages and the failure to properly nerf LeBlanc and Zed's oppressive kits.

Katarina is only in the trifecta because she's resourceless. She's seen numerous nerfs to her, but none of them seem to be budging her from the meta because champions that could easily bully her out of lane (Ahri Annie Malzahar) have gotten their faces bashed in with the nerf bat from the godawful mana regeneration changes. Out of the three, Katarina is the least egrigous example because of easy she is to shut down with proper teamplay, and honestly most of the complaints I hear here against her are people that just don't know how to play against her. Kat's just filling the void in the trifecta because LITERALLY NO OTHER MID LANER IS OP ENOUGH AT THIS POINT TO STAND UP TO LEBLANC AND ZED.

Zed is one of the bottom two in the trifecta because his laning is so toxic at this point that he's cemented in with LeBlanc (the trifecta is like the triforce in Zelda, you take the top part off, but the two bottom ones will remain). Because he can poke endlessly thanks to his laughable energy costs on his Q, he can easily bully the majority of champions out of lane with his damage. If all else fails, he'll eventually win the war of attrition, with mana mages having to back because they can't stand up to Zed's energy regeneration. Also, because of his damage and lack of mana gating, enemy mages have to buy regeneration and defense items (the most egregious one being item 3140, since it builds into only one AD item) while Zed gets to rush item 3134 and item 3153. While Zed is overpowered and toxic right now, his kit is mostly healthy, and he can be balanced with proper energy costs, cooldown increases, and damage tweaks.

LeBlanc, however, is the worst of the worst when it comes to the three. LeBlanc saw niche play in earlier seasons thanks to the fact that she had a stun in her kit (silence + root = stun). After they took it out, her play rate started to dwindle, much to the pleasure of everyone unfortunate enough to lane against her at one point in their game. And then Riot gutted mana regeneration, and LeBlanc didn't just return, she put a stranglehold on the mid lane metagame. Because Katarina was becoming a thing, a demand for a lane bully that could hit Katarina from the back lines was in. Fizz came in due to his broken numbers, but after Riot finally decided to balance him, he moved on to annoy people top lane and jungle, but he was arguably balanced. Zed quickly took up the mantle due to his energy resource, but LeBlanc followed soon after by being the most toxic mid laner in the game since pre 5.4 Fizz. She quite frankly didn't need a silence in her kit, it only served to amplify her bullshit. She could still make you want to punch a hole in your monitor with her disgusting early game burst damage that could 100 - 0 you before you could even react, and then jump to safety. Her lack of a mana cost on her ultimate gives her even more free damage, and makes her roaming potential second only to Zed. LeBlanc can make short work of carries without having to build mana regeneration items because her kit does so much damage that it makes up for the horrid mana regen changes. All of the counterplay in LeBlanc's kit relies on her messing up, and getting really mad when she doesn't. That's why she's considered to be universally toxic across all ELOs, and is banned in 70% of games.

And according to the PBE, nothing is being done about any of these champs. In fact, thanks to the mastery changes, mana mid laners are going to be even more screwed!

Do you know what happens when Katarina, LeBlanc, and Zed are all banned? Mid lane becomes stupidly diverse. Seriously, I ban Zed and LeBlanc every time I'm captain, and the enemy usually bans Katarina, and when that happens Ahri Annie Brand Cassiopeia Ezreal Lux Morgana Veigar and Xerath start getting played in the mid lane again. Hmmm. Why would that be?

Riot, I'm patiently waiting for you to end this streak of balance issues in mid lane so that one of these days I can actually look forward to playing it should i be forced to-

Ah who am I kidding. Aight boards, place your bets! Who are the next 3 champions that will crowd out mid lane when Riot whack a moles Kitty Kat, LeBronze, and Zeds Dead them to death like they've done will all of the other former trifecta members?

The balance reason why these 3 champs are crowding everyone out?

As cool as speculation is: Balance has nothing to do with 3 champions being at the top. It's more 3 is a nice number to keep track of.

If you're playing to win: why would you bother maining the 2nd best champion when you could main the best champion? It doesn't matter if 2nd best is 50% worse or 0.0000000001% worse with every consideration taken into account: if you can play the #1 guy you play the #1 guy.

Due to how intense pro-players look at stats to milk the smallest of advantages, the power difference usually is in the 0.000001% variety concerning best meta picks as well. New players need a valley of power to tell the difference between good and bad picks, not pros. Pros only need fractions of a percentage differences, and the pros are the ones setting the meta picks.

At least with no mirror-matches and Riot generally causing a rock-paper-scissors dynamic there's 3 top picks rather than just 1.

There's always going to be a top 3 best champions for each lane in each meta regardless of how amazing Riot is at balance, that's just how a meta works.

Finally - If you look at win rates and tournament performances, there is no clear-cut 3 best champions. That only shows up in popularity searches and tier-lists.

While Zed is overpowered and toxic right now, his kit is mostly healthy

Toxic is the exact opposite of healthy. It essentially means a lack of counter-play, anti-patterns, and a mess of design issues.

It's not a synonym of Overpowered. OP just means high numbers.

You can't be both toxic and healthy.

for a balanced game there should not be 'one champion to rule them all'

play cho'gath, destroy every assassin ever.

AH HOW COULD I FORGET CHO'GATH?

Yes, he will be one of the one's that will fill the void when one of the Trifecta members goes due to his passive sustain. At the moment, despite the stupid amount of damage you can do with him full AP, he's still not OP enough to deal with LeBlanc and Zed. He can make Kats cry though.

lol.

cho'gath makes zed and lb cry because he just heals up all the damage, becomes too tanky to burst and then bursts your face off whenever he feels like it. and good luck juking when he silences you beforehand.

For plat +, the top 10 mid lane win rates only have 3 manaless champions, Ken, Kat, and Mord. As for pick rate, again only 3, Yas, Kat, and Zed, with Ahri being first who uses mana and has almost double Katarina's play rate. Malz has an almost 60% win rate vs Le Blanc, and a 56% vs Zed with Kat being the only one at 50%. Annie is 52% vs Kat and 54% vs Zed. Then there's Ahri who is 53% vs Zed, 56%+ vs LB, and 49.92% vs Kat. So, Kat is the only one actually doing well against your examples in soloq.

So, stats not only show that your examples are wrong, since they are beating Zed+LB, so 2/3, there is the fact Kat is the only one doing well against them so her being easier to stop compared to LB/Zed is incorrect as well.

Heimer is very hard to all-in, especially when you know how to land your stuns. He also has enough passive health regen to just stay in lane and farm tons of gold. I've had a lot of success with him against assassins.

Remlap12231 votes

Yes, Heimer's kit is pretty oppressive to play against. Due to mana regen nerfs and the fact that his turrets can stay alive indefinitely if they aren't taken out, I think he'll fill the void too. So that's two of the three in the trifecta. But they're both immobile. Jeez, the next trifecta is going to be a really short one.

Veigar Is that a short joke!?

Icestar11861 votes

I was suggesting him as an anti-assassin pick, not the next member of the "trifecta". Also, if you know how to play against him, his kit isn't too oppressive and he makes for an interesting lane.

when did malzahar get a nerf? also malz shits on zed

All you are looking at is lane.

In my elo (low plat) I permaban Ahri, LeBlanc and Katarina.

Zed is manageable. His late game is so horrendous that with a carry top or carry jungler, he becomes irrelevant if he isn't up 10+ kills. Even a Zed that's up 5+ kills, but didn't manage to suppress the enemy top and jungle, would not be able to win the game consistently. I've won plenty of games where the enemy Zed starts out 7-0 and ends the game (losing) 14-7 due to not knowing what to do late game and getting outdueled by enemy bruisers or better scaling assassins. Of course I also lost games where the enemy Zed snowballed out of control, but against most mids that go 7-0, you wouldn't have a hope in hell; with Zed, you always have a chance to juke his ult or simply outscale him.

Ahri, LeBlanc and Katarina on the other hand can pentakill entire teams.
