Balance Posting Guide

It's easy to get caught up in anger over balance changes, especially if they're geared towards a champion that you play a lot of or if they're ignoring issues which you think shouldn't be ignored. That said, it's important to keep a level head if you want Riot to respect your opinions (and our opinions as a community). There are good posts, and there are bad posts. As a community we should strive to make good ones so that Riot does not have to sift through as much junk to hear what we want to say, and so that our opinions can be constructive and help them with their job.

Let me show you an example of a good thread: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/2tE6HFGx-is-anything-meaningful-going-to-be-done-about-varus

This thread is great because it presents the problems with the champion in a straightforward manner, presents a few options as solution and discussion ideas, and then proceeds to ask for more ideas from the community. This will generate a positive discussion, and if Riot takes time to glance through they will quickly see a bunch of useful ideas. If you want your ideas to be considered, this is the kind of thread you should be making.

Now let me show you an example of a bad thread: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/zWbe33YO-we-dont-want-to-touch-kassadins-ult-we-feel-like-it-defines-the-champ

This thread has a lot of upvotes. People are obviously concerned about the state of Kassadin and they don't like these changes, but that's literally all this thread has to offer. Rather than suggest solutions or better changes, the original poster merely says the balance team should be fired. This will not generate a good discussion, and is far more likely to just generate a bunch of angry posts with no constructive elements. It's popular because it's passionate, but it's also going to be ignored because it's angry and offers nothing constructive.

So to break it down in a tl;dr - Make posts that do more than identify problems. Try to give suggestions for your own and provide points of constructive discussion. Simply whining that you don't like a change will accomplish nothing. If you want Riot to care about what you say, then give them a reason to care.

I like the thought. But I think a lot of the later (bad as you describe them) are born of frustration. The only Reds that seem to come to the Balance forums are ones not on the balance team. When a post (like the Varus one) gets ignored people vent in a non-constructive manner. This leads to more and more Rioters avoiding the forums, and this leads to more and more rude/mean/frustrated posts, and this leads to more and more Rioters avoiding the forums, and this.... well you get the idea.

Only communication can end the bad posts and help the good ones. And sadly Riot has the burden to start such communication.

I'm of the opinion that a lot of these threads get read. Obviously I could be wrong, but the number of times I've seen a post complaining that threads don't get read immediately see a red response has always surprised me. Meddler has also been saying that he wants to improve their communication here... so ideally we should try to facilitate that with good posts.

I don't think Riot needs to respond to every constructive thread, just knowing that they're reading them is enough.

But that's the trick isn't it? Meddler, Ghostcrawler, ect... have said they "want to improve communication" on the boards. But it's become a buzz phrase much like "soon", "strategic diversity". I would like to see the number of times this was said. After a while it becomes a slap in the face if it's been an issue (as they have said) for over a year.

Look at the attention given the good thread vs the bad thread.

Fuck this forums really.

If only I got PBE access... people are actually mostly reasonable there.

A lot of that stems from kassadin being a popular pick in both soloqueue as well as LCS. He's just more interesting to talk about than Varus for a lot of players. But yeah it's sad how people seem to be attracted to the angry posts with little feedback.
