ADCs do so much damage that melee carries have to be broken to function....

Yasuo Jax Vi XinZhao Ekko Pantheon TryndamereFizz . All of these champs have some broken mechanic that is kinda oppressive to play against but they need it simply to get to the ADC or to do enough damage to kill them quickly.

ADC do so much damage that melee vs ranged would simply be one sided if those champs did not have those oppressive mechanics. If riot tones down ADc damage maybe some of those other issues can be addressed.

Yasuo is the 1 truly viable melee adc in this game and people fucking hate him for it.

Ralanr16 votes

It's so funny how true this is. Any time a melee carry becomes somewhat viable (Yi, Tryndamere) everyone hates them and usually have valid reasons for them to be nerfed. Yasuo people hate but rarely do they have good reasons.

Melee carries are the worst balanced champions in the game.

MohawkBird4 votes

He's got too much in his kit and does too many things well. That's pretty viable if you ask me.

Ralanr3 votes

I never said he wasn't.

GULAG 4 U1 votes

And that's why yasuo is viable unlike Yi. Because even if Yasuo deals way less DPS than Yi, the utility in his kit makes up for it. And he dies easier than yi too. This shows how important it is for a melee carry to have CC, not retarded amounts of DPS.

Spaceman5pff2 votes

Yasuo has two one-point-wonder spells and one of them is his main damage tool in lane.

Every champion with a one point wonder dps spell has issues. Camille Vayne Yasuo

Melee carries are the worst balanced champions in the game.

lol? gangplank is balanced, fiora is balanced, Yasuo is pretty much balanced and only need a very few changes if you want my though, ranged carries are the worst balanced champions in the game except those with a clear weakness like kog'maw lacking of burst and mobility/reliable utility

Ralanr4 votes

Except Kog is really unbalanced and every attempt to fix it has been disastrous on both sides of the spectrum.

GP and Fiora also had severe balance issues that (more or less. GP can become OP at any moment) were fixed. Yasuo isn't balanced with how strong his early is (everything else is fine though).

Plus that's three melee carries. Tryndamere, Yi, Jax, are three other melee carries that all have some balance issues that prevent them from being allowed to be strong.

Ahristocats4 votes

You're exagerating so hard, just like how you're talking about yasuo "yasuo early is too strong", OH YEAH SINCE WHEN IT'S AN UNFIXABLE ISSUE

riot just have to do a skirmisher update and fixing all those bullshit, but melee carries definitly don't have a "design problem" unlike ranged carries that bring range+reliable utility for most of them+DPS+reliable mobility/self peel for everyone except kog

Let's talk about all those melee carries

Jax since his 2012 rework he's been doomed to be a bad design, why? because new Dodge that isn't RNG makes people not attacking jax during E and then attack him. Why is it bad? because jax defensive spell in teamfight becomes unreliable as fuck and people prefer not dealing with him making him unable to attack. Meanwhile you have to attack yasuo to destroy his shield, and you have to pass windwall if you don't want to wait for it to disappear His utility is also a one second AOE stun AROUND HIM on a long cooldown, do you see a problem here? because i do

MasterYi only champion in all mobas without a single utility, nice fucking joke riot

Tryndamere was perfectly fine in 2011, even picked in competition without being overwhelming in it He used to reduce AD of everyone around him by A HUNDRED, that was a good utility and balanced because he had no cdr and the cooldown was 16 seconds Then what happened? nerfed multiple time because of low elo. Now he needs a rework because him and yi unlike gangplank/fiora/yasuo don't have to manage anything, and just rightclick to win kind of why vayne is bullshit

Aatrox i don't know what's the purpose of this guy, Yasuo is good against mages and synergise with knock ups. Fiora is the best against a heavy tank team, and gangplank is like a generalist melee carry. But aatrox? no fucking clue. he has an AOE burst if he builds AP, long range poke+slow, and no fucking damage at all. Not only he scales poorly, but like i said he has no purpose. Drain tank? almost every carry can draintank nowdays

KogMaw let's end this conversation by saying that kog'maw was incredibly well designed after that riot reworked his Q. by reworking his Q to shred a % of armor+mr+increasing its range, kog had a good utility, and saw a lot of plays just after trinity force was reworked. His win rate in competition was around 54%, but riot nerfed him because he was the only adc played with tristana and jinx then they tried to rework him with the most awful rework i ever saw. bring back 2014 kog

Ralanr3 votes

So you're arguing that I'm wrong about melee carries being poorly designed by explaining how poor their designs are?

Ahristocats5 votes

Jax nothing wrong about his design, he needs his old E that stunned every 3 seconds to give him a good utility+a good defense

Tryndamere back in 2011 his design was fine, now with all the nerfs he became a splitpusher garbage at teamfights

MasterYi bad design, no utility Aatrox bad design, we don't know what he does

Fiora Yasuo Gangplank nothing wrong with their design

Ralanr6 votes

I'm not sure I can agree for Tryndamere to be perfectly fine considering how unhealthy his ult is. Maybe it was better in the past, but the game has evolved to something entirely different.

A lot of champions in the past that were "fine" ended up being changed for better balance.

Arakadia2 votes

Jax's design is pretty bad imho. Its boring, far from thematic except his E, and can be toxic when just jumps, stuns, and melts you once he gets items.

Squey3 votes

Yasuo Gangplank nothing wrong with their design

i feel like everyone who says this either mains them or is low elo. THe higher elo you go, the more skilled ones you will find. They scale so hard with skill alone its retarded. Verse a really good yasuo or gp and u will realize how little counterplay there is

Ahristocats2 votes

good thing i'm neither of those then, right now playing in diamond/master mmr, and i don't main gangplank and yasuo and i still find their design good

little counterplay? lmfao they have more counterplay than any hard carries, between gangplank barrels and yasuo tornado that's better than tryndamere rightclicks, and vayne rightclicks

Jet Sett2 votes

It's simple really, when a melee carry is strong they're usually oppressive due to the amounts of mobility/engage necessary to properly carry.

Example: MasterYi can chase down and kill that speedy little MissFortune . But if he can catch her out of position with her bonus MS he can obviously catch champions with low mobility even when they're in position because he's able to catch the mobile ones. In fact I'm almost certain that people have said that mobility counters counter immobile champions too because Thresh ult certainly slows down Vayne, but it also cripples Veigar, and Ryze snare certainly locks down Ahri, but it also opens Mordekaiser up to a painful combo he can only hope to mitigate.

Yeah this entire thread occured to me the other day when playing as Talon. I was super fed, like 12 kills at 30 minutes with 1 death. Jump over a wall to get on Caitlyn with ult+W+q (that's 3 stacks of passive). She flashes before I can auto to proc it and kill her. I dont have flash. She then headshot+regular auto crit and I'm dead. The amount of work I have to do is eclipsed by her simply auto attacking me normally.

If you're a melee champion in this game and you don't build 2 tank items you're simply nothing to an adc. The thing is Talon could NEVER kill Caitlyn if he also had to buy 2 tank items by the time midgame ends. Not in his wildest dreams. Only melee champions with heavy CC can handle adcs in a vacuum-like scenario. As soon as things like Flash/Heal and the supports items and peeling are considered, the only thing I can think of that really keeps ADCs in check are fed enemy mages who delete ADCs like it's their only purpose.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

The reason for that is that this game is set up in a way that is actively hostile to melee carries - if you use melee carries as "sustained damage dealers via purely auto-attacks".

The reasons for that are plentiful:

  • Burst damage scales. This first point is a big one - as a melee champion, it is mandatory to move into the enemy's range of influence to do something. This opens you up to all the enemy's abilities. This is a double hazard for for melee DPS, as they need to stay in that close range for an extended period of time, but the DPS build leaves them squishy by necessity. And scaling burst damage ensures that there will always be enough damage to blow the melee carry up. DotA doesn't have this problem, as burst damage hardly scales in that game (there is no AP, and cooldown reduction is MUCH more limited). This means that the increased tankiness from base stats will eventually outscale the burst enough for the melee carry to close the distance and get that Lifesteal rolling. Also, BKB exists to help melee carries with not getting blown up - it takes getting damaged by magic completely out of the equation for a short time.
  • No double-dipping. In League, a high DPS build is always fairly squishy and susceptible to burst damage. This is due to none of the ADC items giving major defensive stats (even Phantom Dancer only works if you got to auto the burster at least once before he unleashes his damage).
  • Kiting is better. The smoothness of the game generated by the lack of turn times contributes as well, as it enables kiting as a ranged ADCs defense tactic - can't hurt what you can't hit, can you?
  • No XP feeding. As melees need the tankiness from levels, they cannot afford to share XP. In fact, the class that loses the least effectivity when sharing XP are ranged ADCs, as neither their safety nor their damage output are as dependent on the stat.

Fiora is another viable one too.

DunkinNoobs5 votes

I don't know if I would quite call Fiora a melee adc; Despite the damage Fiora can do, I'd never want to rely on her to be the main DPS threat on my team. If anything, Fiora is a sustained burst champ, doing huge damage each time she procs a vital but not doing much damage otherwise. That kind of inconsistency really isn't something that the adc class has. I don't think that calling her a melee adc is wrong, per se, but Yasuo has far more in common with adcs than Fiora does. I'd group Fiora in with Riven as skirmishers rather than true melee adcs. The only champs I would truly consider as melee adcs are Tryndamere MasterYi Aatrox Yasuo, and only Yasuo can teamfight like an adc would and that means he's the only successful one.

Vesemir1 votes

She isnt. Too much shields and CC this season. It feels bad as a Fiora main. I hate CoC and redemption. So unnecessary 2 things.

Squey1 votes

because he shits on any and everyone. im talking about the good yasuos, not the normals or lower tier trash yasuos.

DunkinNoobs3 votes

Yes, that's why Yasuo's winrate, pickrate, and banrate go down as elo goes up; because the good Yasuo's shit on everyone so hard.

Honestly, its the adc items that scale too well with each other, not the adc kits themselves. This combined with the damage increase from masteriws creates massive damage. What I suggest is nerf adc items but buff the adcs to compensate.

badooga1 votes

One idea from an older thread is to make the crit from item 3031 and item 3087 unique passives so that they can't stack with each other, decreasing ADC burst damage. Furthermore, removing the crit from item 3046 should do some good, as well as some other changes along those lines. While ADCs are supposed to be the DPS tank killers that do sustained damage while kiting to avoid getting caught out, crit allows them to anihilate squishies and do a lot more damage than they should be. In the same way that removing some AP damage from the game did the game some good (mages received more item diversity and became less oppressive at the same time), removing some crit from the game should do some good as well.

Furthermore, buffing tank masteries is definitely a must. Revert some of the nerfs on Grasp, and change Bond of Stone to something else (I had the idea of armor and mr that stacks each time you get attacked, and at the max of 5 stacks, your next attack slows the target) that isn't utterly useless (buffing BoS is unhealthy in this "shield, heal and peel for the ADC so that they kill everyone" meta).

Treyhova3 votes

The problem with removing crit is that is really the big niche for ranged characters, since their abilities tend to suck and, since crit only effects autoattacks, others are unlikely to buy it. I would be fine with the IE, Shiv combo not being a thing anymore, but removing crit from PD would be a ridiculously huge nerf.

"broken mechanic that is kinda oppressive to play against" These Champs listed above are all Champs that thrive off of getting into the middle of combat, they need some kind of oppressive mechanic to be able to do what they were made to do. Each of their mechanics have a sort of counterplay against them, which makes them balanced, but they still have that sort of "broken power" because without that their premise they were created from would be too weak to survive in League. Mainly put: learn how to play as/against Champs, and stop complaining on the boards about dumb shit we've already heard.

Qukslice11 votes

Tell me. How in the hell do you counter play Vi? This isn't an insult. I just don't understand what the hell I'm supposed to do when Vi jumps on me with her ulti.

YumScrumptious961 votes

QSS, have a support get Mikael's, or position yourself away from the enemy as far as possible so her ult doesn't make you super easy for them to kill.

WestwardZephyr4 votes

Actually, a QSS won't do anything but make you run a little faster away. Can't do anything about a Vi ult, other than have a friendly Camille ult her.

YumScrumptious961 votes

Oh k. That's a little bullshit then because QSS isn't even strong as is.

PureUtterCancer1 votes

You can't qss any knockups rn, only other hard cc.

YumScrumptious961 votes

You can QSS plenty of knockups, you just have to flash after QSS. So if that's the case with Vi then QSS does work, that's how its intended to work. If QSS+Flash doesn't work against Vi ult then yeah that's fucked.

PureUtterCancer1 votes

You can QSS the damage from plenty of knock-ups, but i think there's not too many you can QSS the actual knockup duration itself, like you can qss yasuo ulti, but only the damage, the knock-up suppress still happens. You can correct me if i'm wrong and you have examples, but last i checked you couldn't qss the knock-up itself. Also i know for a fact that you can't QSS vi ulti, lol yeah it's kinda fucked.

YumScrumptious961 votes

I'm certain you can QSS the knockup suppress from Yasuo ult, I've seen Tobias Fate do it with orange + flash.

Technically, Vi's ult isn't what you counterplay, it's her follow-up, where she has less available mobility and should be easier to kite. The issue right now, though, is that Vi deals a lot of burst damage, and can kill squishies too quickly for them to react properly, unless they blow Flash, but that in itself is kind of necessary for her to function right now, because she'd otherwise never be able to follow up properly. If kiting were less harsh on melee champions, fighters and tanks wouldn't need burst or excessive mobility to be able to have an impact on ranged opponents, but until then, it's always going to be a situation where either the melee champion reaches their ranged target, in which case they auto-win through sheer stats and raw damage, or they don't, and get kited until they die.

Rintam2 votes

Vi main here, offering her thoughts.

The thing with Vi ultimate is that most people who complain about it use their mobility or CC while she is ulting. Vi ultimate has two parts, the gap closer and the damage. Ccing her during the gap closer is useless, but if you CC her during the damage, she stays stunned even after her ultimate ends. Most of the burst she's known for comes with the Triforce empowered E after her ultimate, so stopping that is more effective. For instance, with Ezreal, don't arcane shift until after her ultimate goes off. With an Annie or Ashe, stun her as she reaches you. She will still do damage, but she won't be able to combo off the ultimate. If your playing a Jinx or Twitch, you have to rely on your team to do this. Jinx is a low mobility ADC, and her lack of peel or escapes is an intended weakness. If you're squishy against Vi, stay grouped, because alone she will just wait out the stun or chase you down and kill you. ADCs or mages can't 1v1 divers. Some very effective counters to Vi are Sivir, because of her spellshield, Tahm Kench, as he can eat whoever she ults and make her useless, Kayle, because they can trade ults, and Shyvana, who, post 6, will always beat her in a 1v1. Fiora can Riposte her ultimate easily, Jax can dodge her E, Tryndamere will just kill her, and Olaf ignores her CC. Fizz, Vladimir, Shaving, Elise, Zed or a Zhonyas all do the same thing. Poppy has a strange interaction that ends the dash portion. Don't play Jihn or Xerath against any diver. Just don't.
