Sona
Sona is one of the older champions in the game. Her kit gives her some rounded power allowing her to have a little bit of everything that a utility support would want; poke from Q, healing/shielding/damage reduction on W, movespeed/slow on E, and a great aoe stun. Her power level has fluctuated since the beginning of league. A while ago she was given a mini-rework in order to take away some invisible power from her auras and make her more interactive, and if you ask me it failed.
One of the big things Riot has to think about when changing/updating a champion is "What does this champion do?" Like I have mentioned earlier, she kind of does everything but doesn't truly excel at just one thing. Yah, her poke is above average but if you ask me the fantasy of a poke support is not what is or should be intended for Sona.
Sona is at a weird spot in League of legends where she could be considered old enough to be looked at for a VGU/update but she was just given a texture update not too too long ago as well as that mini gameplay update which changed auras and her heal. Sona, like many of the old champions pre-rework (Warwick, Urgot, Taric) seems to fall flat when you consider her in-game fantasy between lore and gameplay. Here is an excerpt from her lore:
" In her hands, it played tones which stilled or quivered the hearts of those around her. Within months, she was headlining with the mysterious etwahl for sold-out audiences. She played as though plucking heartstrings, effortlessly manipulating the emotions of her listeners - all without a single written note. In secret, she discovered a potent and deadly use for her etwahl, using its vibrations to slice objects from a distance. She honed this discipline in private, mastering her gift, that she might be prepared should a fitting recital require the harmony of her talents." Swain himself is even quoted on her Champions Universe page saying "Her melody moves the soul, her silence sunders the body."
If you ask me, this is not shown very well in her gameplay. In reality, she's a Q spamming bot in lane and presses w while fighting and e while trying to escape/catch someone. The only thing in her gameplay that mirrors her lore a little bit would be her ultimate. She makes a sound so mesmerizing that her enemies can not control themselves and must dance.
Please Riot, give Sona some depth in her gameplay. She has the potential to be this Bard-type character (bard as in music not bard as in the champion) Let her string together music in order to create different effects. Let her truly buff and rally her allies while weakening her enemies. She could be a support that people fear in teamfights rather than find annoying in the laning phase for dealing more damage than the ADC. Let teamfights be her concert in which she will truly ROCK.
I made a post similar to this a long time ago and got a response from RiotRepertoir . The link to it is here. The TLDR is basically -> Sona is particularly too good at everything to be considered good at one thing and given an identity. She also is a support that is easy to pick up and Riot does not want to touch her in fear of turning away new players to play her. He also mentions something about meaningful choices. I'm assuming he was trying to say how Sona's choices (her passive I'm again assuming) although are quite different and unique are also quite linear and not super game-changing. I just hope that maybe since the time of that response they would have a change of heart when it comes to League's own Maven of the Strings.
TLDR: Sona is a champion that could and should be looked at by Riot and possibly given a complete overhaul kit-wise.
