This board colossally misuses, misunderstands and misbrands “stat checkers/stat checking.”

In other words, “I do not like it, therefore it is a ‘stat checker’ and thus this displaces any blame I should take for my poor play and applies it to something else entirely (the champion).”

I am not going to get into specific cases of where I see it used wrongly because honestly, I don’t want to risk violating rules by calling out threads/players. In addition, it happens pretty regularly, so...

Let’s just define what a stat checker is/does:

A champion that has very little meaningful gameplay choices. They simply defeat you by being statistically superior. Generally these champions are point-and-click and are fundamentally and mechanically easy to grasp. What are some examples of stat checkers?

Trundle Shyvana Nasus (it pains me to say it, but it’s true - more on this in a bit)

Pretty much any tank is a walking stat stick.

Point and click mages.

AD Carries are NOT usually stat sticks, even though their premise is very straight forward and their damage is point and click. That is because their gameplay revolves around kiting and kiting or orb-walking/chasing is actually fairly mechanically intensive. You absolutely know when you have someone on your team who can do it, while you painfully feel when they can’t. However, stat checkers don’t have this dilemma - their gameplay revolves around decisions and less around mechanical play.

This leads me to my next point:

Stop stigmatizing the idea of stat checkers. Sure, too much of any concept being invested into one aspect is bad. More aptly put, a champion resting on the solo basis of simply stat checking probably isn’t great design - but, as we stand in the current game, those champions are necessary. For every stat checking tank or bruiser, understand that ultimately they hit a wall where they can no longer stat check and that’s where they fall off. And just because they stat check doesn’t mean they don’t have gameplay, they just have less. And in a game where champions like Yasuo, Riven, etc. exist with practically no functional cooldowns and infinite outplay potential, straight forward “stat” checkers are some of the best kits to overcome these champions. You may not like stat checkers, but they’re necessary most of the time.

So please, let’s stop misrepresenting this term and just call it what it is: you hate a champion for whatever reason - and that reason may be perfectly valid. But labeling it something that sounds cool and iniutively correct doesn’t make what you say true, it often time just makes you seem like someone that subscribes to hiveminding while avoidsing critical thinking.

HD, crit marksmen are stat checkers. Horrible ones that should not have been left to fester in the foundation of this game for this long, to be exact.

The whole reason why marksmen have an issue sharing a lane with anyone else is because they're objectively powerful with too little meaningful influence on the game's outcome outside of just being superior by stats. Who cares if they kite? Nasus still has to CHASE, right? Same shit. They're stil stat checkers. All of them. Marksmen like Lucian and Ezreal aren't as bad and that's probably why Riot's not super itchy to take them out of the meta so Caitlyn and her 650 no-scope ass can jump back in to ruin solo queue for everyone.

But with this logic, everything is a stat checker. You’re ignoring the important gameplay that comes with their kits. Yes, there are obviously some ADCs that are much better designed than others. And certainly, crit has its flaws. But to ignore ADC gameplay and simply brush it off as stat-checking is a bit asinine. I don’t deny that they aren’t or haven’t been overpowered for but they do have gameplay that riot, for better or worse, has structured their game around.

Well, lemme be a tad less sharp about it:

Being largely focused on AAs isn't the problem. Being solely focused on AAs is the problem. There's literally 0 nuance or variance to crit marksmen when they hit their late game fantasies, to the point where some parts of their kit aren't even worth using over AA spam.

Idk if Riot's actively trying to tackle this or no, but it IS an issue with marksman designs in this game.

Not every Champ has to be fancy and outplay enemies with his abilities. There is Micro and Macro. It´s not only about mechanically good but also playing with your brain turned on.

At the same time a lot of marksmen now you down without even having to move. Armor is actually too weak, and marksmen should have to kite better.

Where did you get that from my post? Why are you responding with these sentences?

Pretty much any champion with little to no utility is a stat check, as they offer nothing to a team aside from damage. In MMOs, the term is called a dps check instead.

The more utility a champion has, the less of a stat-check they are.

Crit based ADC's for the most part are stat checks. Crit items good = crit adc's good. Crit itmes bad = crit adc's bad.

The concept of damage vs durability is stat checking and if we are to go by that logic alone, then literally everything in this game is stat checking because every value of a concept is done so through statistical measurement and application. In other words, merely pointing out a stat and saying “hey this is stat checking!!” just isn’t valid, because everything is constructed by an interaction of statistics in this game - it’s how they’re applied that matters. And although ADCs do right click for their damage, the interaction of kiting for retreating and orbwalking when chasing is incredibly mechanically intensive. Like i said, you definitely notice when you’ve got an adc that can’t do it well, but you’ll never notice if you’ve got a maokai that doesn’t know how to W - it’s because there’s not much mechanical execution in maokais kit, it’s about understanding zoning and when to engage. And while that’s not mechanically hard, knowing all the different situations and how to do it certainly isn’t easy. And that is necessary. And it’s why the idea of simply shaming stat checkers for stat checking is a bit absurd.

Using this logic then, to a certain extent, every champion in the game is a stat check (which isn't entirely untrue) as every champion in the game builds items and scales with those items. Take Vel'Koz. He is incredibly reliant on hitting skill shots and as such isn't easy, has fairly high base damage and so doesn't scale as well with AP as some other champions, but if you gutted AP items super harshly, then he'd be unplayable.

Arguing that crit based ADC's aren't massive stat check, just under the pretence that they have certain, difficult mechanics is extremely biased, especially when their reliance on kiting has been massively reduced over the years - simply stand as far away as possible and rely on your team mates to stop the enemy divers from closing that gap. That's rather an irrelevant point anyway, as by definition a stat check is not measured soley by how easy a champion is to play, but more so how reliant they are on a specific stat and how the strength of that stat(s) dictates how strong they are as a champion and crit items, as well as the stats they provide, are arguably the most volatile bundle of stats in the game. How many times have the crit items been massively changed in an attempt to balance the champions that build them? Usually at least once per season. As I mentioned earlier - crit items are strong = crit adcs dominating the meta and being the only adc's that see play and if crit items are bad then those same champions are heavily pushed out of the meta.

Arguing that only simple champions can be considered stat checks is kind of crazy as even the most mechanically simple champions may require extensive game knowledge in order to make the most use out of them. Take Singed for example. He is an extremely simple champion mechanically, but has one of the greatest increases in win rate after 50 games on the champion. Sure Maokai is very straightforward, but he does not innately win from pressing W every time he sees an enemy champion. Same goes with Yi, he can't just run into the enemy team and 1v5 pentakill without properly assessing whether or not the enemy team has the necessary tools to stop him.

It's often that people use this and other terms to "justify their argument".

This guy uses Yi and killed me, he's a stat check, therefore he's OP.

This guy was an ADC and killed me, he's a stat check, therefore he's OP.

Granted, we are in a damage-based meta, but there is more to League than just... stats. Kiting, chasing, baits, ganks, anything. You said it best: stat checks exist, but they exist until a certain point, and then they have to rely on their decisions and movements, like avoiding the CC on CD.

Trundle is just a stat check, really?

He's nothing like those other two, as he's always been picked solely for his utility, and it's his utility that was nerfed hard last year that ultimately gutted him (he has no early game anymore). If he was truly a stat check, he wouldn't be able to be played support with cdr builds centered around Pillar usage. He does no damage with builds like that.

He also steals stats, so simply having higher/lower numbers than him means nothing outside of the rare 1v1 situation (Trundle never goes top except as a counterpick).

He's probably one of the least stat-checky bruisers in the game. He still offers the same utility no matter what his score is, which is why funneling gold into him is pointless.

Juggernauts are the exact opposite of statcheck because their damage is the most unreliable in the game. “Statcheck” implies that you can win just by comparing numbers and then easily apply them. Champions who you cannot kite/run from or who can easily damage you from range are more likely to be “statchecks” because they don’t have to worry about how they’re going to apply the stats that they checked.
