Avoid Dying

I am as guilty as most anyone of greed and overextending, but to improve my game and to advance, I must work very, very hard to suppress that greed and blood lust so that I can focus clearly on the bigger picture and my end goal.

Your champion dying is the worst thing that can happen to you and your team apart from losing your nexus and the nexus is lost because you and your allies died too often. Even if you are the carry, once could spell doom for your entire team.

Is a deathless game possible all the time? No, not realistically.

But us as players must take steps to minimize our deaths as much as possible.

Even seizing an objective when it is unwise to do so is being greedy. One turret is not going to win the game. It helps, but you are more valuable to your team alive than a destroyed enemy turret.

Blazing solo against the enemy nexus is also greed. Allies going in one at a time trying to kamikaze for the win is an almost assured path towards defeat.

We must weigh our choices wisely. Games last for many long minutes. We have the time and resources to make the right choice in any given scenario, but we often allow our emotions to override our reason and it is only after we've been punished do we begin to realize the mistakes made unless, of course, we continue to allow our emotions to dictate our actions in which case, we are blind to finding any fault in our actions and misplace blame upon others.

Some of us suffer under the delusion that as long as we accomplish something, a death is a noble sacrifice. These occasions are few and far in between. The reality of the situation is, allowing our champions to die in an attempt to accomplish something without any guarantee of accomplishing it is not nobility. It is selfishness. It is an emotionally driven goal to try and seize instant gratification for ourselves so that we may experience a fleeting sense of accomplishment.

Dying because our opponents outplayed us is acceptable and inevitable.

Dying when it could have been easily avoided or because we made the conscious decision to throw our champions into harms' way is a criminal offense in League and our opponents will most assuredly punish us and, by immediate extension, our teams for it.

The other day, I was playing MF ADC in ranked and I had a support Sona who would always stick around too long. One example was after we took the bot lane turret, I was calling for us to go mid, but she was calling to keep pushing in to the second turret. After a little back and forth, it seemed obvious that she wasn't going to leave the lane, so I stayed with her and we pushed. Enemy team comes, we both die, the instant we respawn she tries for it again. Later on into the game, the enemy team is doing baron and our nexus is open. Pretty much everyone is saying to just leave it, but she goes to it, runs in 1v5, doesn't steal the baron, and explodes in the process, leaving us to defend an exposed nexus 4v5 vs a team with baron buff. As you can tell, that didn't go so well.
