The chat filter and the mute options do not give license to fill chat with obscenities over a video game.

Krigjer7 votesI agree with OP, HOWEVER I wish I wasn't so afraid to cuss in chat for fear of punishment. Let me clarify: I was raised that they are just words and not all that offensive, however, it's not acceptable to cuss relentlessly AT someone.
The difference between 'Wow that ult is fucking bullshit' vs 'You're a worthless fucking player'.

If you are directing your anger at someone then your behavior is unacceptable. But expressing how you feel so long as you aren't trying to hurt or antagonize another is perfectly healthy.
I'm a firm believer in free speech and the freedom of expression, but when a person uses their speech to oppress another then how can it be "free"?

If it makes you feel any better, I do it all the time. If I talk at all in a game, it's almost a given that I swore about something in that game.
Sometimes it's positive ("Holy shit! That Zil ult <3"), sometimes negative ("I can't fucking believe I thought that was a good idea..."). My rule of thumb is that I try to never use chat for any negativity that's not self-directed (I've found that self-deprecation goes a long way towards preventing toxicity - own those mistakes!), and as such, it's already difficult to direct any profanity towards anyone else.
So, I guess what I'm saying is, profanity isn't inherently problematic, nor inherently punishable. It's all in how you use it. You seem to have a good sense of that already, though, so you should be fine.

ahferroin71 votesI kind of understand what you are saying, but most of the people I see verbally abusing someone demonstrate no interest in teamwork. I don't generally mute anyone myself, but I also don't really care how angry you are at me, because I'm just going to report you for verbal abuse at the end of the game anyway.

for "Hate Speech" and never say anything in the chat. then i see ppl in the chat cursing at one another or had ppl get rude with me for not ganking their lanes enough. rito needs to fix this issue, or at least look into their reports like they are supposed to.

Phrixscreoth3 votesBut is it an issue? If you're doing nothing wrong in your other games, those reports won't go anywhere. If you ARE doing something wrong in your other games, well it's those games that'll get you in trouble, not a game where you never said anything and played Shaco.
And Riot DOES track people who are reporting a lot and having nothing come of it. Their reports get weighted less than others and so won't ping your account the same way other reports might (at the very least, that's how it worked last I heard).
ahferroin72 votesBecause verbal abuse is only one facet of poor behavior. Quite often, when I end up reporting someone, it's for multiple categories including verbal abuse. If someone is willing to be verbally abusive on a consistent basis, then chances are that they are also behaving in other ways that are considered reportable.
