How about a visual for Sion ult for deaf players?

Hellioning··60 votes·3,945 views

One of the people I regularly play with is deaf, and I just realized it'd probably be a good idea to have some sort of tint on the screen whenever Sion ults. The loud scream is helpful, but if you can't hear it, you have no warning unless your teammates are aware enough to start pinging, which isn't necessarily true in solo que.

Nocturne has had it since the beginning, and Zilean got one recently, so why not Sion?

I am a deaf player and i have no issue dealing with sound, my only issue is that when i press Alt +1 or +2 i know they speak something but that is not shown in-game so i had to go to their pages / other sites to see what does they say.

EMOFRATPARTY1 votes

Just curious, were you aware that when Sion ulted there is a global audio notification? For the current version of Sion, I mean.

EDIT: Also, what do you mean by this?

I have no issue dealing with sound.

Fateborn5 votes

He means it by "I don't need sounds to know things are happening around me" For example, Nocturne's ultimate, even though he says Darknessssss, we see tinted background blocking out vision, and we knows it've been used. Sion isn't like that. So in respect to Riot, they should remove the stampede sounds, or add some visual marking on screens that shows that he used it, but doesn't reveal where it's coming from, like four corner arrows shaking which would be ideal.

I have many questions. No disrespect intended.

  1. Do you read lips?
  2. How do you learn words?
  3. Do you drive?
Jamnon1 votes
  1. Yes.
  2. Watching lips and feeling their throat as they speak.
  3. Yes.

Are you deaf?

What does driving have to do with being hard of hearing?

JsKingBoo1 votes

Sirens

Jamnon2 votes

Yes.

Emergency vehicles use flashing lights too. Plus if you see every car behind/around you acting oddly (EVERYONE pulling off to the side), you know to move. Hard not to notice that. Or it's a green light and no one moves.

Being deaf, you pay more attention to visual ques. And also you dont notice when someone honks at you lolol.

Must be nice driving during a traffic jam.

Behind you during daylight

Very few people around

Or it's a green light and no one moves.

You're at the front of the intersection

A very specific circumstance, true, but unfortunately being deaf doesn't help in this situation

Deaf, not blind.

Still people around.

Rear-view mirrors.

Absolutely. While we're at it, let's have Sion revealed on the minimap to all players both when he begins and during his charge. There should also be a giant red arrow visible to both teams above Sion's head, indicating which direction he's currently being steered. Also, he's constantly spamming that global noise, just to ensure everyone on the map knows what's going on. We could even have the map auto-ping at his start location to grab attention.

Hell, let's just skip the middleman and have the game auto-guide all enemy champions out of Sion's path. There's no reason why Sion should be able to land his ult with any kind of reliability anyway.

Disclaimer: This post has been typed in a sarcastic tone, meant to demonstrate a point. Do not take seriously.

I don't see why they can't make like a subtle shockwave indicator from where the ult starts that only appears just under the player's feet or something, I mean the man literally scream so loud everyone on the map can hear him. Is it entirely implausible to suggest they have a general idea where the scream originated?

OyddAWqJ5r2 votes

Map spanning, distortion-looking shockwave that travels outwards from Sion's location at an extremely fast speed (covering the map in a second flat). Makes sense given it could be the shockwave from his map spanning shout. Only problem is it giving away his location.

Kitsuki051 votes

This is why I'm suggesting it is only visible under the players feet. You don't hear things from their epicenter, you hear them from the general direction relative to your currently location. So for example if he was ulting top and you were bottom, you'd see/hear the sound come from somewhere far north and you wouldn't freak out and run under tower. Still don't know exactly where he's going though.

DUDE BRO5 votes

Nocturne's tint is because he removes vision, not because of his dash. Zileans ult does it because it's hard to notice during a teamfight. It would be pretty annoying to have your screen tint red everytime a sion ulted, since he could be top lane while you're bot lane.

And unfortunately deaf players are most likely an EXTREMELY small playerbase to put any sort of toggle into the options, especially for just 1 champion.

Jamnon1 votes

So instead of catering to a player base, they should cater to a single player (and even smaller player base: one person): ie you.

Makes sense.

RelentlessGrit3 votes

So very thoughtful :) How could they refuse such a model citizen of the community?

TenSlashTen3 votes

I honestly didnt know he had a sound effect until the 20th time I played him I had the game sound on for once... His ult is just so easy to avoid idky we even need a visual.

But yah.. I guess...

Agidyne3 votes

Why does the warning even exist?

I just want to ram people and both the Ultimate and the Q are already easily dodged by just moving a little bit to the left/right.

I mean, c'mon. Sion isn't even invisible like Rengar was back then.

And you can't even flash while you ult to have some garanteed damage.

TeemoHunter13372 votes

i disagree.

either keep it as is or remove the shout too.

We play without sound at the school's computer room, a mild screen shaking would be awesome.

There are a ton of games that you miss out on; I've got my PC hooked up to a TV in my living room, so it makes it difficult to use sound on any gaming I do. I'm partially deaf, so I like it a little louder if I'm gonna use it, so I usually don't. Plus my wife hates (HATES) League. I've been gaming just reading subtitles and using visual cues for a couple years now.

I've also got young kids now, and a lot of games use bad language, so keeping it to subtitles can help with that anyway. There are a LOT of sounds in the game that give other players cues that I miss out on, but this is one that might be fixable. Maybe something like Rengars' ult, where you get a little "!" above your head?

Orangesilk2 votes

There should be a toggleable option for subtitles, so that the rest of the playerbase doesn't see any changes, but for the player who needs the subtitles a small text indicating taunts, jokes and audio warnings Sion roar would be great.

TheSeltzerBaron1 votes

I can hear and I usually don't notice it until I see him go flying past me. My mom is almost completely deaf so I sympathize but it's not going to happen.

dialMARK4acti0n1 votes

This would be really good. Heck! Subtitles for VOs. 'Cause having Dunkmaster Darius if you can't hear just sucks! 'Dem taunts be crazy.

I play with sounds off and still never got hit by a Sion ult. Heck even when i play with sounds on, i never hear the noise

AvariceSyn1 votes

This brings up an interesting point. There should be accessibility options for players who are deaf or otherwise impaired to still be able to play the game. Most games have subtitles of some kind. Speech and important vocalizations such as sion ult should have the option to be read in chat or above the ability bar of the hud.

Jamnon1 votes

There could be a colored outline "flash" of the map (think tunnel vision) which would be selectable from within the game menu. Just like you can choose color blind mode in some games, so too could you turn this option on, in case my suggestion wasnt clear.

Think "Golden Eye" for the 64, like when you get shot, the screen flashes red around the edges. Something similar.

KidKaiser1 votes

while they're at it. they might as well make Sion's ult actually STOP once he presses R the second time.

instead of having him drive off half way across the screen before realizing his summoner pressed R like 50 times.

Cindikle1 votes

I would assume they would be a bit more used to it honestly.

There's a lot in this game that those of us can hear react to. They have had to learn to not need this. While Riot has done a good job making things as visual as they can. You can't just slap a visual on everything. Sion's ult isn't exactly hard to avoid even if you don't hear the sound.

I'm not saying they shouldn't get something if it is hard for them to manage. I'm saying the ult would probably have to change to make up for how it's even easier to prepare for.

Even with that. I think the sound is only there for flavor. Not really a warning system.

straight4free1 votes

The deaf players are lucky, they don't have to deal with the horrendous annoyance of listening to Sion scream at you for an hour.

I need a slider in the options specifically to mute enemy champions. I just turn champion voices off entirely when I have to face a Sion.

No champion should be like that.

GhostCadillac1 votes

I know League is known world-wide and I really don't intend to be mean, but I highly doubt there are many players who are hearing impaired who play League. Obviously, League is a team game that requires a lot of listening and cooperation. It'd be extremely difficult for the hearing impaired players to comply with League's concept. In any way, for any player who play League and are hearing impaired, you have my respect with managing these skills well.

On a side note though, this is a must be incorporated thing if there are players who are hearing-impaired that play League.

SwainDaRokJensen1 votes

I agree with this. many times I don't even hear the scream until Sion is actually in vision. (might be a bug?) So the visual would be nice.
