Anyone else worried for other 'fun' champions?

Both the Sion and GP reworks took a goofy character and made them deathly serious. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, of course, but it does set a worrying trend; namely, I'm worried for Vlad. I play Vlad mostly cause I think his puns are hilarious and I don't want them to go away. There are, of course, other champions who are also in danger of becoming more serious; Mundo, in particular, given his in-game and story personas are incredibly different, just like GP.

I want League to remain mostly silly. Taking yourself too seriously is really common in gaming these days, and I don't like it.

The thing with Gp is that in the lore he was never a "fun" champ. He was a ruthless pirate who shoots his own men when they disobeyed him and who murdered his own father to get to power.

Sion more or less didn't have any personality. His "personality" was a bunch of schwarzenegger puns and these weren't really fun for those who don't get the joke(and even then it wasn't that funny).

Moving beyond characters to settings—I am preparing to cry if/when they retcon the Yordle Mothership. :(

At any rate, I agree with you. A friend of mine pitched a strange but plausible theory: that this is part of League's internationalization. The idea is that certain international audiences just don't get irony the way American audiences do, and so they're converting everything into a "played straight" version. Again, a strange thought, but not one I can readily dismiss.

I think the same way. Gangplank, despite being a character I didn't own and didn't really enjoy playing, was still one of my favorite champions to have in the game because he always came across as a sort of nice-guy badass with a jolly laugh and free oranges who could carry your team if things got rough, kind of like a Braum who deals damage and wears clothes.

I miss that old (medium old?) champion splash art as well. He looks like he's in the middle of stifling a laugh.

ah well, maybe this is just Riot's way of making him grow up or something.

They're probably reserving 'fun' stuff for skins and yordles (except Poppy; she's all business, except lolipoppy; that's all nightmares)

i love his puns mostly because they feel so out of character. EVERY other aspect of him is dead serious and he's just going around dealing puns of damage in a completely serious tone.

While I think the writing team has mostly been on a roll lately with the Bilge stuff, my only major complaint was the Gangplank lines. I mentioned over on Factions that most of his new lines (especially post-"death") fall into the category of "I'LL [do bad thing] TO YOUR [body part]!" And, yeah, that was always his persona in the Lore, but pretty much all exposure to Gangplank came from gameplay. As far as I can remember, Gangplank's only appearance in the lore aside from his own biography (Unless you want to count MF's mother's murder retroactively) before Burning Tides was in the JoJ article about a drinking contest with MF. So I was, despite being a big lore fan, always associating Gangplank with "Yo ho ho...and a bottle of.....RUM!" And while his new VA is certainly a better fit for his Lore character, I just had more fun listening to the old one.

And yeah, League is an inherently silly environment. It has to be remembered that this is a universe where a hamster man flies a helicopter and a chaingun/spatula wielding manatee existed before being murdered by a werewolf. That doesn't stop some dark stuff from being possible and good variety, but the balance is a very important thing to watch.

I think the champions most at risk of getting this treatment are these: Vladimir You already brought him up. Honestly, Riot could just copy/paste Blood Lord's VA and do it, not that I'd want them to, because League has a ton of sinister supernatural villains, and only one pun loving hemomancer. DrMundo Again, you mentioned him. Mundo is a tricky character. Mundo is a serial killer. He killed people, he killed pets, by all logic we should HATE Mundo. But everyone loves Mundo. He's goofy, he's silly, and that works. I think the darker parts of him are already well presented just by the names of his moves (Infected Cleaver? Sadism?). Veigar This is a tricky one too. Veigar's backstory is pretty traumatic. But a big part of Veigar's personality is that yes, he is laughable. I think exploring some of the more sympathetic parts of him could work in a backstory piece like MF/GP/Graves/TF's new ones, or perhaps during a Bandle City event, but a lot of those funny lines are just the core of his character now. He has a little charm that way. That was a short joke.

disagree. i can't get into a game when it's too childish, the lore gets me into the game and makes it a lot better.

The thing is, both of these were to line up the in-game speech and the lore. It is said in Mundo's lore that he has an "unique manner of speaking". So I doubt he'd have any changes in that way.

To be honest GP was... not a well designed champion.

And Sion was even worse, the Visual Rework on him was more important than it looks, it was someone who was ESPECIALLY revived, why would a goof like old sion would be revived?

Probably something similar will end happening with Urgot.

They will surely keep Vlad's puns - that's part of his character. And as an arrogant mage who thinks himself as invincible while acting like the biggest douche on earth... yeah, horrible puns and bad humor somehow hit to that.

Mundo on the other hand could use more seriousness as his theme would really benefit from it. Apart from the hulk, he's also a genius doctor but also a mass murderer (mostly for research reasons). That kind of fails to deliver currently, but I could see him reworked into some kind of "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hide" champion, transforming back and forth between "genius doctor" and "HULK SMASH!". So much potential...

You left out Miss Fortune. They took probably the least serious of the ADCs and changed her lore into the typical grimdark vengeance trip. Now her ingame dialogue doesn't even match with her lore, so I'm pretty sure they're going to change it to finish making MF the same character as literally every other ADC this side of Jinx.

Like some have mentioned, yes, you all should be extremely concerned for any 'fun' champions left. If the VU team touches Vladimir , I 100% guarantee that his puns will be completely gone (except for 1 line that has a random chance to play when you recall, so they can say they 'totally get what players liked about him!')

DrMundo Will be turned into a joyless, grimdark 'Mr. Hyde' monster. Riot has basically admitted this already. At least we'll get to see how 'SUPER DUPER SERIOUS' Riot is now, without any of the 'stupid kids stuff'

Veigar Will be preserved because he's a Yordle, and those are the only things allowed to be silly anymore (besides the random mutant)

Taric Will have no quotable lines at all, and will certainly lose his joke (it's not serious or forgettable enough). I doubt he'll be super dark (there was a long Riot-led post asking what players liked about Taric), but he'll certainly be boring, like every other champion personality Riot has released since JInx ( Gangplank , Ekko , Kalista , Sion ). Except for TahmKench , that was a pretty good VO.

Riot is trying really hard to make League super dark and serious, like a 14-year-old wearing his Slipknot t-shirts and dying his hair black to show how cool he is. Don't expect any more 'fun' things that aren't sterilized to death
