URF isn't bad this time around, it's the community

Śhunpo··59 votes·17,586 views

Sure, the crit buff and lethality, Zhoyna's etc. makes the mode innately toxic, but in actuality, it's the community.

This game's community used to appreciate having derpy fun and toxicity wasn't all too common outside of ranked. Nowadays, the community just picks meta every single game in EVERY single gamemode (including ARAM, utilising rerolls) and toxicity is at an all-time high.

To say that playing this game is frustrating is an understatement, as it well and truly feels like you're in a mental hospital as opposed to a video GAME. That's another thing, "game" used to translate to fun with competition thrown in, now it's competition with the possibility of fun. This is just fundamentally broken and makes it so that the only retention to games is the fact that you MIGHT get to a level where you can compete on a national or international level.

In my personal experience, every single game of URF has been a sweatfest, with little to no fun for both sides (plus toxicity in the mix), with only toxic 0 counterplay champions being picked. I'd love to pick some fun niche stuff, but there's an AP Malphite and some other bullshit in my games.

tl;dr URF is amazing, this game's community is garbage

UPDATE: Just had multiple teams rush push to end. Epic.

urf has always been like this but for some reason everyone forgot when they were asking riot to bring it back

Śhunpo7 votes

It wasn't like this when it first came out, and for the 2 weeks that followed.

cuz people were still experimenting. urf has always been a sweatfest.

Śhunpo3 votes

True, but then Riot banned said champs and there was actually SOME level of diversity.

Mordistar1 votes

You know, i do agree with you, however I would like to see an item banned first before anything else, see where the gamemode ends up. item 3146 This little thing is the most broken item in the entire gamemode, if you have scalings for both, this is first buy and you run to the bank with it. The champions abusing it are extremely toxic to face, and in Jax's case is downright impossible to deal with. I want to see this item banned effective immediately and see how the meta shapes.

The changes Riot made didn't help either. Oh just remove the top twenty? Well the next twenty still grossly outshine everyone else. Bans? Not gonna work because at least 30 champs are S-tier. etc. This is why ARURF is superior, even if URF as a whole I dislike: At least you have a fighting chance then.

Jeddy0178 votes

Yeah, but once people realized what the best champs were in URF, most people just played the URF Meta. The same champs showed up in most games. And EVERY single time URF was brought back, people always bring back the URF Meta. EVERY TIME.

Eventually Riot added bans to chill the URF meta so we don't have to see the same champs EVERY game. Which eventually led to ARURF. Then, this awesome community cried for OG URF because they just wanted to go back to playing the URF meta.

You're right OP, URF isn't bad. The Community just ruined it. Thing is that they ruined it YEARS ago.

Mianta12 votes

The game gets ruined when that m7 try-hard zed deletes you in the blink of an eye, you know? It gets to the point where you either have to accept the grey screen again, or try hard to survive so you can have some morsel of fun you were hoping to have by playing this certain champ on URF.

Idk. I agree with you, but I'm also in a position where if i literally cant do anything, then I'm not having fun.. so I play another game hoping I get a better comp that I can trade with, cuz I do love URF. Especially AP rakan in it lol.

Blue Shift7 votes

It's because SO MANY champions are so extremely frustrating to verse.

Their design philosophy for a while now has just been "make it fun to play and balanced for pros so we sell more skins".

No champion in the past like 2 years have had actual thought put into how people that play against them feel.

Spooky Skeleton6 votes

"oh boy urf is back let's have some fun!"

entire enemy team picks op shit, splitpushes constantly, then types GG EZ

"on second thought let's just not"

Van Dam Bam5 votes

URF has always been and always will be like this, even back at season4 people will just lock in the most op shit just to win and even back then people made posts like this with titles such as "URF is a fun mode but the community is making it unfun". Best thing to do is just do group play or something or just don't play it,tbh i've played so much URF since it i first played the mode that it no longer isn my cup of tea anymore,i can lock in fizz and spam e or karthus and spam r/q or cancer shit like wu/vlad/zed and go against them so many times before i say ok i'm done.
That's why i loved nexus blitz, was a new mode with alot of new stuff to experiment with but everything in URF is figured out and now it's just spam the OP shit for the win and if there's anything i've learned from playing league it's that the players would rather spam OP shit and be meta slaves than do their own shit, remember the "Don't be a meta slave" era where people were against the tank, bruiser, mage, adc, supp meta?

0 Hogapu4 votes

Your tl;dr could apply to League in general tbh.

Śhunpo4 votes

Honestly, that's my view on League as a whole. The game is quite alright, but the community is downright dull, unoriginal and toxic.

What I don't enjoy is

Syndra clicking R at 2-3 items and doing 1800 damage.

AP Kai'Sa doing 1500 damage with a evolved W.

Hecarim one shotting people with no real counterplay.

Fun fact, Riot actually banned overly oppressive champs with URF the first time around.

ugh I wish they would, I played arurf pretty much non stop when it was out before on live and pbe, I'm tired of regular urf already. It's just not as fun and repetitive.

Thefrostyviking3 votes

I mean, i define fun in urf as either trolling people by using some weird ability spam/combo or just deleting them in the blink of an eye.

Or doing something like dark harvest Cait with 2 lethality items+4 IE´s(Vs squishies) and ulting people to death.

However as long as i can keep murdering enemy champs or trolling them around successfully that means i´m winning which results in their towers and nexus going down so naturally the games end.....

tons of game are amazing at it's core but people in general ruin it. I dont like playing pvp because instead of wanting to just play and win its "gotta be toxic, gotta be toxic whether I'm winning or losing, it don't matter".

Ya, This is why I don't play URF and never understood it's popularity....

There's ALWAYS some try hard assassin main, or duo who will stun lock 100 to 0 you in every game!

I feel like those are the only people who keep crying for URF. They are basically bullies ruining the game for everyone else.

In my personal experience, every single game of URF has been a sweatfest, with little to no fun for both sides

most of the problem is that elder dragon.. as its not hard to win if its handed to you on silver platter.

each dragon gives a 20% damage swing, plus true burn damage, plus all the other stats. PER dragon is a lot of power to be given free at the 10 min mark of the game. add baron on top of that then its pretty ridiculous.

the objectives are turning 100% the games in to 10 min laning phase followed by a stomp and forced end at 20 or ff after dragon goes down. this is anti fun when the game is so heavily dictated from one objective at the 10 min mark. and this makes the mode a far cry of what urf used to me when they first released it.

when you consider before elder was added to urf there was at least a chance for some of the games to make it past 30 min and to have to have some back and fourth fights on longer games. those were always the more fun games at least for me even if i lost..

the dragon is also warping the picks massively and limiting them a lot. as you need to pick strong laners so you can contest dragon when it comes up..people would be more willing to pick more weak lane champs/for fun picks. if the mode was a little longer or if they dident have to worry about contesting dragon or getting stomped so hard immediately once the other team gets an elder.

the pick warping from the short forced snowball games and dragon is causing a lot people to complain about urf vs arurf. which riot will use that to only do arurf from now on or worse not bring it back at all..

in the PBE people were telling riot that elder dragon was a problem and was anti fun and snowballing the games to hard..riot knew this but did not care.

** the forced objective interactions over op objective is basically encouraging people to more competitive/aka tryhards rather then to just have fun.**

Sometimes it seems as though Riot looked at the way that certain other regions played the game, and then standardized it as "the one true LoL".

Is higher MMR URF like this? I just had a game yesterday where I ran people down as Corki, pressed all my buttons and actually killed them. I don't expect to win, I expect to do fun stuff like I did that game.

Yin Yang Taoist2 votes

There are other modes. I don't enjoy URF because its a headache to play against cheesy champs. Fizz, Rumble, Malzahar. Kallista spamming Q with a Nami pre-made support behind. Jinx and Jhin in the same lane spamming W for 10 minutes straight. Just a headache! So if you dislike it, just play a different mode.

The community is the same everywhere, I don't find a huge difference between people in any game. (Except MMO's where people are generally a bit more patient) Its just that the mode filters out the players who are still willing to play this and those who aren't within the first few weeks. And this is when you have everyone playing champs to win with. I remember playing a Teemo earlier in URF and some teammate was so incredulous that he kept asking if anyone even plays a Teemo in URF. So, that shows you the state of the mode. Personally, I think that they should make URF random instead of letting you pick your own champs. And certain champs which are too spam heavy like Malzahar, Fizz, Rumble, Zed etc. need to be nerfed down in that particular mode like they did with champs such as Ziggs, Xerath etc. in ARAM. Of-course, its a personal suggestion. Its not like the mode is deserted! But unless something like this happens, I'd probably never go back to it.

I'm not one to complain about the return of URF as a temporary game mode although in relation to this post I find that the community that abuses said champions completely ruins the fun of URF as a whole. Obviously URF is about 80% CDR one shots, stupid builds and etc but there are people out there that take it too seriously of such to the point where they rather try hard in URF and feed in ranked :|

Champions that are not tilt worthy but boring to play against in URF (My opinion): Fiora Fizz Kayle Syndra Brand Morgana Tristana and a few others

Naturally all these champs get banned by me every single game..... there's no fun in some player going all out on Fiora just to say gg ez i'm clearly better then you... thankfully I'm one of those people who only builds full movement speed because its dumb af

no one is abusing champions, they're simply having the fun that everyone who wanted urf wanted them to have.

KiwiFlavor Ziggs2 votes

The bans really help. Seeing Fizz, Morgana, Vladimir, Master Yi, and anyone that can become untargetable or virtually un-cc'able banned away makes the game fun again. I like seeing people experiment with other builds because the playing field level out more. Because even if the enemy is an S-tier champ, one good cc orwombo combo can take em out.

I'd like to see untargetable spells get a slightly longer cooldown nerf by a second or so to increase the counter play gap so they dont have to be perma-banned, but maybe they'd be too weak idk.

Śhunpo2 votes

Tbh all untargetable spells should have always been 3-4 second flat cooldowns from the start, if not 5 seconds, and Zhoyna's should have just been disabled or kept at a 120 second cooldown.

Lovelle2 votes

There are also more champions with kits that are difficult to play around when played competently, which is exacerbated in a mode like URF, where no one has to worry about cooldowns.

Mr Dalloway1 votes

For me my biggest complaint has been players that queue together insisting on laning together. 9 out of 10 times they do not choose champs that have synergy and then get stomped. When I get stuck in a game with two duos it forces me to go mid alone even if I pick a champ that would be better off paired with someone top or bottom. But some games are fun so just have to get through the crappy ones. At this point I am just spamming Kai'sa because I know at least I am good at her, find her fun, and she can be OP as hell.

I am banning Akali every game even though Zed and Katarina can be just as bad in a good players hands.

You stated that people picking META champs, but not we dictate which champs will be META, so partially Riot's fault and their unbalancable champions.

Śhunpo2 votes

Definitely, Riot is at fault, however, that being said if not for the community we wouldn't be seeing meta champs in every single game. Buuuuutttt, I do agree, fuck Kaisa , she's broken even in URF!

seem to me like you might no like pvp games after all, maybe you're more of a solocampaing player or pve player... its not the community you dont like, its the competition and if you dont like competition im sry to tell you but pvp aint for you, even in agario the little circle game, usually people try super hard.. its normal, its pvp man

Śhunpo2 votes

Don't get me wrong, I love competition, but I only really enjoy it when it is fun. Winning in my honest opinion is not (subjectively) the only reason to enjoy any form of competition, I think that that argument is flawed.

PvP games work when you can enjoy them even if you're losing and when you feel like you're learning or improving. This is just something you cannot do with League nowadays thanks to the community being almost entirely made up of passive-aggressive or hostile individuals who get a kick out of feeding their own ego. The only thing I'm improving at when matched with these players is my ability to withstand insanity without going overboard myself. I really do think that people should calm down and actually have a more positive attitude.

That said, all of this is personal opinion, so if XxShadow_Master69xX (or ||||||| or "insert random numbers here") wants to correct me and say that watching opponents get frustrated their one and only way to enjoy the game I'm not exactly about to discredit that, as that's their opinion.

Yea the game is unfun cuz u die quick but that's kinda the point of it. I can be very toxic in solo q but in urf? Nah idc enough and idk why people do. It's a dumb fun mode I see no reason to take it seriously whether I win or not its literally the same thing. Kids should fucking relax.

Śhunpo2 votes

I get that URF is supposed to be about speed, but holy shit do I die almost instantly. It was never like this with old URF (unless some very talented individual picked Zed ).

That, and I'm sick and tired of this game's community having the whole "ggez" mentality even with what is supposed to be a fun gamemode. Seriously, just play ranked if you want to be that sweaty. If it was that easy you should clearly be playing ranked and you should already be Challenger, so just leave us to play a fun mode!

U forgot the epic fun champion Malphite. Memes aside urf is insanely popular and ofc it'll attract lots of people included kids. Imo urf is a toxic mode all by itself that's why u see so many toxic people in it. The whole mode is about abusing shit anyway. Imo ascension and one for all are way better and more fun and less toxic I hope riot brings em back cuz I'm kinda tired of having urf every year for more that 2 or 3 times. OK we get it but give us sth different in between.

Yesterday I was playing with a really tryhard Katarina, who went like 30/1 in those two games I played her with. She was boasting about her skills, but from all of the 10 players, she was the only one, who took the game that serious. URF is just like this. There are always no life, no fun players, who just go for showing off. I overall enjoy this gamemode, because I can do things otherwise I couldn't, but I really do pity those, who play meta things in this gamemode, because they are just wasting time there.

Śhunpo1 votes

I mean, I main Kat and I tend to tryhard at times, but in a gamemode like URF even I know it's just better for everyone (namely myself) if I just chill out and go easy at it.

Need Gold 4 Tent1 votes

I'm a Yi main, and while I did play a few games just to feel his real limits, I generally avoid him. That said, when I did pick him, it wasn't always instant win because then the other side might have a Jax so it actually balances out. He shuts me down, murders my team. I revive, outplay his dodge with my equally broken no cd Q and murder his team. The thing is, his team doesn't really get to play because of me, and my team doesn't get to play because of him and I can understand how that feels.

But you can still have fun as long as you don't want to win. I get in a game, spam skills, ks as much as I can and lose in the end, and that's fine. Let the OP people do their thing. You'll get some on your team and some on their team and it will balance out to make it somewhat playable. If not, well there's always next game.

Someone figured it out!

To be honest I’ve been trying to find the perfect middle ground when playing urf on my accounts. Champions who are fun to play, but not anti fun to play against.

So far I’m just playing champs I enjoy and here’s what I got

Anti fun

Galio.... didn’t really surprise me, I just wanted to play him once since he’s my favorite champ, but yeah. He’s more broken than a McDonalds Ice cream machine. Lux Poke bot. Was kinda boring tbh. At least with Galio I had a bit of fun. Shaco he’s pretty fun with the full AP build, but he rides the edge of anti fun a bit too closely Ryze see Lux

Fun to play, not unfair to play against

Warwick healing build and AP build Rakan movespeed build, AP build Mordekaiser normal build, Full AP build, movement speed build. I expected Galio levels of broken-ness and was pleasantly surprised that he wasn’t too overbearing Karma this one surprised me tbh. I thought she’d be broken but she’s actually just slightly above average Skarner literally just go full movespeed and kidnap people it’s pretty funny, but he himself isn’t OP.

Not that fun to play (IMO) and not anti fun

Nunu I’ve tried full tank, full AP, and Full MS. Some of it worked but I somehow find SR Nunu way more fun than urf. It’s an anomaly.

Fun to play but terrible/situational

Darius by the time My Q finished winding up Id keep dying. And being Kited is 10000x more painful. But if you get ahead dear god he seems straight anti fun. Swain Surprised me. But his passive doesn’t scale with CD, his E and W are easy to dodge, and his Ult just doesn’t heal him fast enough in urf where everything’s on a 1.5 second CD.

Still unsure

Teemo had one guy curse me out for dying to shrooms repeatedly and another literally LAUGHING and challenging me to a 1v1 playfully. I think it just depends on how you think about Teemo.
