Assume you are someone like Urgot or Illaoi. You are against Teemo or Mordkaiser. I got adaptive helm to deal with them but my friend says it’s better to get black cleaver, but I told him what’s the point of getting a damage item first when Teemo just pokes me and mord just beats me in every fight? What do you guys think?

I main Urgot and do the same, rushing Adaptive Helm against these match ups. It greatly reduces their damage and enables me to win lane that way. My base damage is oftenly high enough to deal with most targets that way (if they are not insanely fed).

Yes you will survive him for longer but you will also clear minions slower, so you will suffer more damage to begin with.

It probably depends, if you have decent base damage abilities you could probably go that and tabi into teemo and do reasonable. You will be sacrificing waveclear by doing so as well and hope not get to far behind by that stage.
Don't know about morde, if your ad hes probably gone seekers (which is far better than adaptives build path) and wrecked your ass anyway as he'll have 45 armor from it while whacking you in his sex dungeon. Even with adaptive I think he would win that exchange _also throw in a tabi's to his build too _.
On some juggernauts if you want to just neutralize the lane, sure. Others would rather try to go for the kill opportunity that building some damage can provide.
Illaoi and Urgot actually have ranged abilities, so they can get their core item first no problem. If you really need the MR, just grab and sit on it until you complete your first core damage item.
