Can we please get a rioter to explain the reasoning on matchmaking?

I doubt this will get a response, but getting some sort of clarification on why putting people on win streaks with worse and worse teammates makes sense? Along with that, why keep the bad LP system? Why keep promos/series?

i can see them trying to ignore the question about LP and promo series... i dont like them either .. but at least they MIGHT have SOME sort of argument i cant think if to try to explain that away.

as for why the put people on win streaks with worse and worse teammates.. that is beyond my level of comprehension... i can verify that they do that... but why on earth the system does that is beyond me..

Honestly, I think it's to keep a portion of the player base playing more. In the higher divisions you have rank decay, so you have to keep playing to stay in that division.

In lower divisions many players are happy to reach gold for the rewards, and kinda reduce their play rate once they achieve that goal. If Gold skill players get there to easily, they may not play as much, hell some may not even queue up for ranked till next year... if you're not playing, you're not invested, if you're not invested, you're not going to be spending money.

This is a free to play game, and every last one of them puts in some kind of psychological grind mechanic to keep people playing... you think they don't do it in this game?

Promos in theory shouldn't exist. If there is a whole different set of games you need to complete to get to the next division or rank then that means they clearly match you up differently than what you are usually matched up with. That is wrong.

I'm more worried about normal matchmaking, I'm Silver that got matched with/against Challenger player about 10 times this season, with at least 2 Diamond players in each of my normal games... Most games end up being full Plat with me being the only Silver around.

Marshbouy1 votes

Your normal MMR must be really high, and most high elo players have really low normals MMR, since they play ranked.

Riot will almost never go back on something they implemented to be fancy, even when it's proven to be detrimental.

So they will not go back to a ladder system, although the tier system doesn't offer anything meaningful to the game that the ladder system did not already. Except more toxicity if anything else due to the high stakes of a series and losing one.

Barring anecdotal evidence, has it been confirmed that players on winning streaks are matched with worse and worse players?

as humans. we recognize patterns. thats one of our best specializations as a specifies.

two god damn times. after EXctly. 5 game streak. I was placed with 2 SILVER 1s as a PLATINUM 5 player. and the enemy team had 3 Platinums and 2 gold 1s. this is one example. this happens every time you win multiple games in a row. 5+ games. good luck bud. you will get trashed soon. the difference in MMR was ridicllous. also I was placed against a challenger smurf with 97% winrate 2 days ago after a 4 -5 game winstreak.

you can go back years. and you will see the countless threads of this phenomenon happening. it is a phenomenon. this is a pattern. there is no way to prove it 100% because thats like saying what comes after infinity? the only ones that can prove its true are Riot. we ourselves can see the pattern and complain about it.

to the op.

they will probably not respond to your post. because the system is obviously flawed. there is a reason we're using LP. and not MMR like every god given ranking system that exists. its just a stupid gate. that promotes duoing with higher elo and boosting/smurfing. and discourages doing well solo

who the hell in this world. goes from a gold level player. to diamond. in a day or two. nobody. you have to improve. over time. but they want to burn you out so badly. at a 51% winrate if your a beast and some 3000 games played to get there. if you're lucky. chances are you are going to get stuck in platinum.

I literally know NOBODY that ever created a new account and made it to high elo on their own. even if they are originally high elo. they duo so they DON'T get shit team mates syndrome. and they do it so that they don't fall into the infinite LP+/- Trap

its amazing to me to see a player with good cs. good kdas and plays out well. has the same winrate of a feeding lee that has shit kda. shit cs and shit everything. because the system is fucking garbage

I've never experienced these things though. I have been on plenty of winning streaks, the most recent one being a 65% winrate over 80 games (in soloq, up to Diamond 2 86 LP), and that ended because I personally started playing worse, not because of my teammates. I notice that the quality of my teammates isn't related to my winning streaks.

Also, I've made two smurfs, both of which were placed in high silver, and with both of them I was able to climb up to plat with 85%ish winrates, and have never gotten these "bad teammates after winning streaks" that people speak of.

I can recognize patters too, and I haven't seen this phenomenon happen over 1500+ ranked games.

80 games is nothing. you currently have ~50% winrate.

Win streak to diamond 2 immediately after promoting lose streak to d5 0lp

Yes, because of my performance, not my teammates. My teammates weren't suddenly worse.

Humans also see patterns where there are none, and think things that are truly random aren't random. If you get Singed 20 times in a row in ARAM despite owning 130 champions you'd say the RNG is broken or rigged, when it fact it could be perfectly random. I believe it was Apple who had to make their playlist randomize function LESS random because people were seeing supposed patterns and claimed it wasn't random at all. Human perception is really, really easy to trick, so don't take it or supposed patterns for granted. The only thing that matters are raw stats of thousands of games. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you or saying this isn't an issue, just stating that just because it looks like a pattern doesn't mean that it actually is one.

I never put any stock in the opinions of people to lazy to hit SHIFT for the first letter of a sentence. I mean the opinion can't be well thought out if the writer is that lazy is my thought on the matter.

Honestly I wished they switched to a straight lp system. No hidden mmr, no promos, no series bullshit. If you're in x percentile of players, you get x rank. Give players consistent matches where the total lp is as close as possible and players can see exactly where they are at.

No matter whether or not it matches you with worse players on winning streaks, people will still think it does because negative experiences resonate stronger than positive ones.

This is especially true in a community like this, where hating everything Riot does is seen as the "right" thing to do and gets you upvotes.

simsinfinity2 votes

Throw in some confirmation bias too. How do you define a win streak? Why are you paired with bad players after a five game streak and not six? Or a seven game streak and not eight?

This is a game where millions of games are played daily, and a great player will win 60% of the time. If anything, the anomaly is not getting the "bad players" after two won games in a row.

no, this isnt imagined.

the win streak, loss streak rollercoster is a thing. people wouldnt remember the win streaks either by your logic.

if it happens now and then, its coincidence. but thats not how leagues ranking system actually works. winning a game, then losing one, then winning one... thats the exception. the reality is, that win/loss streaks are common.

simsinfinity1 votes

But it is imagined. It's the Gambler's Fallacy in a different setting. The pairing with other players will always be inherently random, but each game is a unique occurrence. Just like a roulette wheel. The ball could land on red 7 times in a row. That does not mean that it is any more or less likely to be black on the 8th spin.

Say it with me now.

"I am a human with confirmation bias. Realizing this will make me less of a twat."

Marshbouy1 votes

Why are people getting put with people above/below them by a multiple divisions? You can't just say "oh it's confirmation bias that i'm playing with silver 1s in my plat 4 game" Sure confirmation bias might actually be the reason behind the "winstreak=loss streak" thing, as I have done thinking about it and it makes sense, but confirmation bias does not address other questions I had.

YoungSirJ0ey1 votes

That's the MMR system, which admittedly could work a hell of a lot better, but is functional, if not satisfying.

Marshbouy1 votes

The game deserves to have a satisfying ranked system. Losing the bid for your next big rank up because of the pure chance of getting an AFK in 2/5 games and a troll in 1/5 is terrible.

YoungSirJ0ey1 votes

That is a different problem entirely, relating more to this game's awful playerbase.

Marshbouy1 votes

It's not a different problem entirely. They are two problems that work in tandem to create an incredibly unsatisfactory ranking system. DOTA2 and Overwatch both have awful playerbases, but you don't have to deal with not ranking up because you just happened to get placed with someone who afks, feeds, or trolls.

Did you have a better system that is guaranteed to work better without being too much of a risk on riot's part? no? then don't complain.

Marshbouy1 votes

A basic MMR system that places your rank based off of your % of players.
