PBE AP item changes - context please?

I just don't get it... why is Riot: -eliminating the "big" ap item purchases by nerfing NLR and lowering it to 1250g? -buffing a very popular ROA while lowering its price (at least they lowered the health i guess)? -buffing what could be good niche items like Liandry's with just straight ap?

I guess these changes are just going to be really big. Aside from making Rabadon's practically necessary early on any ap champ (rather than just eventually), it's making all of the ap items give roughly the same ap...

Is there context anywhere?

Yes, there is, but I'm too lazy to go find you a link.

They wanted to reduce NLR's base AP because it forced any item behind it to be 120 AP if they combined its recipe with any other AP item. This meant that these 120 AP items dominated build paths because they were simply too powerful compared to other AP items. In order to increase item diversity they wanted to more or less standardize the AP amounts you get from AP items.

Here's hoping they do the same with AD items, which I get the general feeling that's what they want to head towards.

They just might. BFSword is commonly considered an oppressively expensive item that keeps most AD build routes unsatisfying - especially when behind.

Honestly, i LIKE that there are expensive build components... it seems to make cs'ing well more important...

Okay, thanks for the context! I couldn't find anything buried in all the "looking for ip team" threads.

I think this will make Rabadon's as a second item even more mandatory... e.g. I used to like to rush morello/lucidity/rylais on ahri, to get 40% cdr and the slow to kite unbelievably well and do massive sustained damage. Now for 500g extra I'm getting the improved Rabadon's passive... then void staff was buffed too... overall my build got stronger but it seems like Rabadon's is just so huge now, and not even hard to build.

I understand why Rabadon's needs the buff (only way to keep total ap from the builds similar, and without that most ap assassins wouldn't be able to burst squishies anymore and would all need rebalancing), but I'm wondering if forcing diversity by making an item mandatory is really the right route. Would have largely preferred just better passives on everything to be honest.

High AP builds are basically Dominating, Because they are paired with Boat loads of Utility,

(how many mages don build item 3089 or item 3285 , item 3157 , and then item 3135 ?)

The basic Idea is to make the AP on item 3151 item 3040 item 3027 more on Par with Ludens and Zonya's. While making item 3089 the only Real go to Item for High AP.

My concern with the item 3152 changes is that Most minions and Monsters don't have MR. So making the healing effect, pre MR instead of Post MR does not help wave clear mages. It more or less only helps in dueling. This change to say Vlad, may be negative or neutral at best. (don't count vlad out until we see him with the other items though.)

And then item 3174 and item 3165 will have more components, making it easier to build.

I think it also may be related to the Abyssal Scepter rework, which was "shelved" because they wanted more opportunity for AP assassins to possess MR bypass.
