Are Critical Damage runes worth it?

Ok sure but why··2 votes·7,137 views

I mean, my rune page for ADC's gives me 37% bonus crit damage, which is almost that of a second Infinity Edge.

It's complete shit in the early game, but late game, it knocks people's socks off.

Do you guys think they're worth it in a meta where games are almost solely determined by what happens early game?

No there not worth it ever.

i use my 20% crit damage page on Tryndamere Jhin MissFortune Gangplank

Tryndamere gets free crit chance at level 1 Jhin gets a crit every 4 attacks MissFortune bounce shot can hit the enemy adc/supp for like 50% hp early game if it crits Gangplank early game sucks no matter what, so if you go critplank his late game Q's are strong

edit: Yasuo because he gets 100% crit after 2 items

I'm actually thinking you could add yasuo to that list, only because of how "crit-centric" his build could be. Add 20% crit damage to mitigate his passive's reduction, warlord's bloodlust being "amped" by the crits, and the bonus healing off things like bork, and he could legitimately become something scary.

BRB buying runes

Actually, it doesn't work that well on Jhin and Yasuo because of the reduced crit damage they carry.

I honestly wish Jhin's AD would be increased with critical damage, too. Maybe increase the amount critical chance increases AD based off critical damage, the same way Ashe's autos work. That'd be pretty nice.

While it would be somewhat niche and would die decently to randy's, the lategame potential something like yasuo could have with these runes could work. At the very least I'd put it on the same "tier" as full lethality+IE yas, if only because this thing would only need 2-ish items to operate on full efficiency.

Definitely not worth it. Youre missing out on crucial base stats. You need more AD for better last hitting and early trades, you need attack speed, for self explanatory reasons, you need armor and MR or youll get deleted. You can use a few of them, but i wouldnt replace too many runes.

Actually attack speed on the early game is pretty much only worth it in the jungle, everywhere else it gets outclassed by ad since abilities dont scale with atk speed, they scale with ad and in the early game fights are more centered around abilities rather than Basic attacks.

Most people tend to favor runes and masteries that benefit them in the immediate, rather than the later stages of the game. Two very simple reasons:

1.) A strong early game leads to a terrifyingly strong late game. If your runes cause you to score a kill 3 minutes in, then runes don't really matter anymore, you basically jumped way up in the power curve. This isn't always 100% true though, and certain champions and players can work with all sorts of sets, but it IS the standard. So adjust accordingly.

2.) The games end pretty fast these days. Average game length seems to be getting smaller and smaller - With the Baby Baron buff coming soon, it'll only get shorter.

EDIT Just a quick tip for Runes in general, if your newer and trying to figure out what to take, I highly, highly suggest taking defensive runes, as they almost always help you out more than offensive ones in the early-to-mid game.

If i see an enemy player in my bot lane who has NO MR or ARMOR runes? I immediately assume him a step down in the experience bracket and step up my offensive game accordingly.

Yeeah, that's sorta what I was looking to hear. I ain't new one bit; I just wanted to see how everyone else felt about late-game investments like that. I try to stall out every single game I can so I can reap the benefits of late-game runes, but everyone else is just really, really eager to get that quick ranked lp.

You would think that it would help the 'Hyper-Carry' types shine, but the problem is that CS is just too critical for them, What helps you CS? early game dominance, so again - we are back to square one.

I'd suggest experimenting and finding what works for you. That's half the fun of league, remember as you go up the ladder though, players get smarter, and you'll start seeing the limitations of taking crit-damage runes into a diamond level game. You will be at a huge disadvantage.

Yeah, when I play things like Ashe, or Jinx, or Trynd, I usually have to either rely on my ranged damage ability to snipe out the bigger minions, or somehow manage to beat their comp and get fed enough for at least one crit damage item.

Personally, it works marvellously with how I play. But I have to tell people before the minions spawn, "Hey, I got crit damage runes, so I'm gonna be a steaming pile of trash early game." But after you get two crit items, you're pretty much in for a nice pentakill or something like that.

After doing the math I would say no. If you have 100% crit chance and build infinity edge, they give a 13% damage increase. If you somehow get 100% crit chance without building infinity edge they give a 16% damage increase. I think an early 8.5 AD and 14% attack speed is just better than a conditional 13% damage increase not accounting for the loss of the typical runes. In reality, it is probably closer to 5% damage increase after losing the other runes.

What kind of math was used there?

If you have full build, around 350 AD in the late game, those runes make each auto do around an extra 150 damage per auto, which is rather helpful if you got the tanks around you willing to let you do such a thing.

The amount of AD you have is irrelevant when dealing with percentages.

2.5/2.87 = 0.87 = 13% difference

You could also take 1005-875 to get 130 and then 130/1005 = 0.013 or a 13% loss in dps

If you really want to get technical though you have to use DPS as a calculation because attack speed loss is factored in.

item 3153 item 3085 item 3006 item 3094 = 130% + 57% base increase = 187%

With runes that is 201%

2.87x0.658 = 1.89 attack speed 3.01x0.658 = 1.98 attack speed

1.89x1005 = 1899 dps 1.98x884 = 1750 dps

1750/1899 = 0.92 or 8% loss in dps

Keep in mind that this does not even account for the fact that you have 80% crit chance. I will redo the calculation with that in mind.

2.5x0.8x350+350x0.2 = 770 2.87x0.8x350+350x0.2 = 874

770x1.98 = 1525 dps 874x1.89 = 1652 dps

1525/1652 = 0.92 (it only changed by like 0.4%)

Now I will redo the calculation for level 1 and show you what you give up for an 8% dps difference at full build.

65x0.658 = 36 dps 74x0.667 = 49 dps

36/49 = 0.73 = 27% loss in dps

Crit runes are generally bad because it's all about the early game in most cases since the game is often decided there. AD+ attack speed generally outperforms such builds.
