Jungle main's opinion on Jarvan right now

High, I'm a relatively average player (don't really play ranked so not really a way to gauge my skill since last time I played ranked was around July). I've mained jungle since about March, and have played for about a year overall now (since December 2013, around Yasuo release). I first played Jarvan back in May during a free week and fell in love with him. Still he's probably one of my favorite champions. Now the actual J4 stuff.

So what has changed in season 5, because last time Jarvan was touched was somewhere in the middle of season 4, and that was buffing his passive to its current state. But if J4 hasn't changed, how could he possibly be op? First thing we have to note is the nerfing of other junglers, mainly Kha'Zix and Elise. Towards the end of Season 4 (actually mid S4 for Kha) many junglers got hit. Of course the biggest one changed by new jungle were Elise and Evelynn (Elise being nerfed and Evelynn screwed by new stronger jungle camps). The biggest change of all though was the rise of Gnar. Upon release many felt Gnar was underpowered, so he was soon buffed. However once he was buffed people learned to play him, and that left him in a buffed state and people actually knew how to play him well now.

So why does the introduction of another champion buff JarvanIV? The answer is simply both of their ultimates. How can this be fixed? A few ways actually. Firstly we can increase cooldowns on Jarvan's ultimate. As someone who plays Jarvan frequently his ult was the first thing I thought was "op" about him, especially with its cooldown. And with his E+Q combo along with his W slow, Jarvan's ganks make up for his poor early clear. Another alternative (I like this one) is to change his ult interaction.

Currently if Vayne E's or Gnar R's someone into JarvanIV's Cataclysm they are stunned. What if we changed his ultimate to where it just pushes them out of the ultimate. This would mean enemies could potentially force Jarvan out of the ult, forcing him to break it to get in or EQ in and potentially lose damage, or an ally could push enemies out of it. This would mean Gnar and Jarvan couldn't both just ult into a 2v5 and still win easily.

Seeing as how Jarvan was not changed at all, he himself obviously isn't the direct source of the problem. So we shouldn't treat it like he is the problem. Nerfing states on Jarvan will do about as much as it would on LeeSin. Jarvan still has his knock up, armor shred, and his terrain creation. The are all key parts to his kit. And while you could supposedly take off the armor shred, I personally feel like that is simply a bandage on a wound you need stitches for. So here's a list of plausible changes I propose:

Change 1: Cataclysm no longer interacts with stuns against terrain (Vayne E and Gnar R). If people can use non-terrain crossing dashes to get out/in (even a well played Lulu ult can get someone out), then shouldn't knockbacks also go through?

Change 2: Decrease Base damage on Q, increase scaling SLIGHTLY. SLIGHTLY. One more time. INCREASE IT SLIGHTLY, NOT MORE THAN 5% EXTRA. This way Jarvan must sacrifice some of his tankiness to do the same damage with Q.

Change 3: Seeing as how Jarvan also gains heavily from Armor pen and shred such as item 3071 and item 3707 item 3134, we could perhaps nerf those, but I feel like that would consequently nerf WAY too many champions, so that one is my least favorite of these.

Feel free to leave your own thoughts on possible ways to change him right now. Please remember though, if he wasn't op in season 4, and is in season 5 without him being changed, what is causing the current strength?

Final Words: Before anyone says "Jarvan main detected" or "Stop defending your freelo," I would like to say I am not really defending him. I will admit he is strong as hell right now. But from experience a good Jarvan player could do the same stuff in season 4.

I don't think the release of Gnar means people are now playing Jarvan in solo q. I'm pretty sure it's because the jungle does more damage and they removed the spirit stone items for mana regen/hp regen. Not only does Jarvan get free damage from his passive, he can place his E get AS and Armour buff which gives him a pretty solid clear.

if someone asked what one problem with jarvan was, i think his clear would be the one thing i wouldn't mention. literally every aspect to him as jungler is better than his clear

JarvanIV is like Vi in that they can both be built extremely tanky and still do scary damage (partly because of their armor reduction).

I don't want to see either nerfed, rather I would see weaker junglers buffed.

Vi and J4 weren't really OP until Riot started nerfing all the junglers that would keep them in their place before.

exactly. neither were buffed, but now they're 'magically' op. they've been like this always, we just had powerhouses like Elise and Kha'Zix who could actually fight them in the jungle. now only Lee Sin contests them.
