Once upon a time there were no "lane roles" like there are now. You wanted to play Ashe mid or Garen bot lane, nobody cared. Wanted to solo-lane with what are now called "supports", nobody cared. Lane roles ended up occurring through the playerbase, not Riot themselves. At some point, players would slowly start using mages vs Assassins mid, tanks and brawlers top, so-on and so-on. However Riot never told anyone to do that, it was all the players making the game their own and Riot just rolled with it. So saying "It's retarded to use Swain bot lane" just because it isn't a normal thing to see anymore is just straight ignorance on your part friend. If Leona's base numbers were better I'd use her top lane as well as support bot.
