Some questions about the logic behind this game

I've heard numerous times, but some champs don't seem to follow these rules. Why ? (And in my opinion, this is what is slowly killing this game)

  • If you're ranged, you shouldn't have escapes / too safe, aside of your range : Ezreal Kalista Tristana. Now imagine giving these tools to a Xerath
  • If you're a juggernaut, you shouldn't be mobile : Camille (not sure if she's classified as an assassin tbh, an assassin shouldn't have 3k hp and 200armor and mr)
  • If you're a tank, you shouldn't have the same damage as a carry : Maokai Ornn Gragas
  • If you're an adc, you should deal constant and moderated dps : Jhin Caitlyn Draven Twitch MissFortune item 3087 item 3031
  • If you're a burst mage, you shouldn't have your burst ready every 3 seconds (Syndra Veigar for instance) : Zoe
  • If you're ranged adc, you shouldn't ever be "too tanky" without sacrifying your dps out-put : item 3047 item 3156 item 3812 item 3046 item 3026

A lot of these rules were made up and/or misused by the playerbase.

For example, the idea of having extra safety as a redundancy on a ranged kit sounds bad in a vacuum, until you realize that Ezreal lacks the firepower of most Marksman, Kalista is outclassed by many champions 1v1 if they can stick on her or outrange her, and Tristana's utility contrasts with her weirder patterns as a hyper carry. These champions trade other things for more safety and redundancy.

A lot of these issues pop up throughout these "logic" issues. They're false binaries, just because you're Tanky doesn't mean you're not allowed to do damage, just because you're ranged doesn't mean you're not allowed to dash, just because bla bla bla you're not allowed to bla bla bla, as if there's only one way to balance a champion in that spectrum.

Camile is a Skirmisher/Diver not a Jug

Where did you hear about those rules?

  1. Is not a rule. If the champion is budgeted for it, then it’s fine.

  2. Camille is not a Juggernaut. She’s a diving fighter, the kind that is supposed to have mobility.

  3. Ideally, yes. And if you haven’t noticed, those high damaging tanks are usually very prominent complaint topics (although as an aside, Gragas is technically supposed to be a mage).

  4. Also not a rule. ADCs have dps on average, but there are exceptions (Jhin, Quinn, and Kai’Sa are all more oriented towards burst then other ADCs). You are also falling into the trap of thinking high damage=burst. A class building only damage with multiplicative scaling in order to take down high resistance and health targets is going to hurt targets without those same resistances exponentially harder. Explosives are strong in order to take out buildings or armored targets, but humans, being made of squishy flesh bits, get deleted by them.

  5. Also not a rule. If the champion is designed to be more sustained damage, such as an Azir or Cass, and they are doing single ability damage like a burst mage, then it’s a problem. But there is no “minimum cooldown” for burst mages in general. It all just depends on the champion.

  6. If you build those items as a ranged ADC, you’re not going to be hurting anything, or if you build just the one you can fit into your build, you’ll still be very squishy. GA doesn’t offer any kind of meaningful protection; very few ADCs can actually effectively build DD; PD is a duelist item, which is only built by duelist champions, it doesn’t help with teamfight durability; Maw is built mainly by assassin and fighter type champs, the type that’s supposed to get a bit more scrappy; Tabi were nerfed for the specific purpose of giving ADCs too much defense against assassins, so you got that one. Kinda.
