[My Rework] Malzahar, The Prophet of the Void

Stephenizgod··5 votes·1,564 views

Before i get to my proposed rework of Malzahar i want to rant a bit, so if you hate rants just skip the writing here, but please do read the last paragraph. Also i ask anyone who down votes to please at least read through the entire thing and i would really appreciate a comment as to why you down voted. ;D

So i posted a discussion about Malzahar needing a buff, it wasnt very popular lol but i think thats because when you say buff, people automatically assume you mean more damage. People really dont want him getting a buff because of his Suppress, but this fear is misguided. Allow me to explain.

The suppress has this effect on people where they assume its OP because they cant move, they dont realize that their are many downsides to his ult the biggest being HE ALSO CANT MOVE! Thats not my point though, you see that you are suppressed and you can do nothing but watch your health slowly disappear, i admit it is not fun. The thing is though, with someone like Kat or LeBlanc or Yasuo or Fizz etc. you dont get to see your life slowly disappear, you dont get to sit their watching while you do nothing... you are just instantly dead... So honestly the suppress is more of a mental thing, where you are desperately trying to do anything but cant (except Qss but ill talk about that later). You dont realize that if i was Katarina you and your two buddies would be dead instantly, no need to sit there and watch, because you cant... she slammed her face into the keyboard and penta'd your team so fast you dont even know what happened. Yet people complain more about how OP Malz ult is... You may say "Shut up stephenizgod, you can CC Kat out of her ult, idiot." to which i reply: Yes and you can CC Malz out of his ult. The window is about the same too, you must cc him right when he casts his ult and you can cancel it (or you can Zhonya's or QSS/Cleanse). Its about the same window as Kat because if you dont CC her immediately you die or lose 4/5ths of your life. Plus even if you cancel her ult she can still peace out with shunpo, Malz is stuck there like an idiot ripe for the killing.
I dont mean to compare Kat to Malz (and im not, merely using a reference point) because they are two different champs with two very different roles, but there is a lot of similarities to what they can do and how they do it (except she doesnt need mana...). Now we can get into the other things like QSS and Cleanse, people always say "Well you lose more buying QSS just to counter one abilities bleh omg bblah Malz ult OP" but QSS has way more uses then just countering Malz. Ignoring its other uses, who cares if you only counter Malz ult? Thats a huge plus! You just made an enemy champion almost totally useless for 1200g (i know thats not right but leave me alone) plus he just blew north of 400 mana at the very least to try to kill you and now all his abilities are on cool down! He has no escapes, no hard CC, and no mobility... GO KILL HIM! Its really very simple :I...

So what to do... No one wants him buffed due to his Suppress that isnt even that OP (dont fight him in a 1v1 with no help around.. he is an Assassin... Zed and Talon can both do the same thing but better and more efficiently, so why does Malz get the hate?) So how do you fix this? I do not know and i do not care that this will get down voted. Here is a slight rework of some of his abilities. KEEP IN MIND I did give Malz a bit more damage in places so that i can scale them back down if people think it is a bit too much. Do not look at the numbers and immediately start bitching!! They can be lowered and most likely will be lowered, think more on the changes not the numbers.

http://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/5.15.1/img/spell/AlZaharNullZone.png

#Null Zone Cost: 90/95/100/105/110 Mana Range: 800

Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy which damages enemies that stand in it.

Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy for 5 seconds. The zone damages nearby enemies for 4/5/6/7/8% (+[1% Ability Power]%) of their max Health each second (damage to monsters is capped at 120 damage per second).*

Malzahar creats a zone of negative energy which damages enemies that stand in it.

The zone damages nearby enemies for 2.5/3/3.5/4/4.5% (+[1.5% Ability Power]% of their max Health each second (damage to monsters is capped at 120 damage per second). Malzahar's other abilities have additional effects on enemy champions standing in Null Zone.

  • Enemies effected by Void are slowed by 6/9.5/13/16.5/20% while standing in Null Zone and for 2 seconds after leaving.
  • Enemies standing in Null Zone will take an additional 20/30/40/50/60 Magic Damage from Call of the Void, this is increased by 5 Magic Damage for each additional enemy champion hit by Call of the Void.
  • Enemies effected by Malefic Visions will take 7/9/11/13/15% of Malefic Visions damage as true damage.
  • Enemies effected by Nether Grasp will heal Malzahar for 1/1.5/2/2.5/3% (+[1% Ability Power]% of their max Health each second they are suppressed.

#Malefic Visions Cost: 60/75/90/105/120 Mana 60/70/80/90/100 Mana Range: 750

Malzahar infects his target's mind with cruel visions of their demise, dealing damage each second. If the target dies while afflicted by the visions, they pass on to a nearby enemy unit and Malzahar gains Mana. Malzahar's Voidlings are attracted to affected units.

Malzahar infects his target's mind, dealing 80/140/200/260/320 (+80% Ability Power) Magic Damage over 4 seconds. If the target dies during this time, the visions pass to a nearby enemy and Malzahar gains 10/14/18/22/26 Mana. Malzahar's Voidlings are attracted to affected units.

http://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/5.15.1/img/spell/AlZaharNetherGrasp.png

#Nether Grasp Cost: 100 Mana Range: 700 750

Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress an enemy champion and deal damage each second.

Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress target champion, dealing 250/400/550 (+130% Ability Power) Magic Damage over 2.5 seconds.

Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress an enemy champion and deal damage each second.

Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress target champion, dealing 350/500/650 (+100% Ability Power) Magic Damage over 3 seconds. The damage starts off low then increases the longer they are suppressed (it deals one tick of damage every .5 seconds starting at 26.6, 31.6, 41.6, 56.6, 81.6, 111.6 at rank 1). If Nether Grasp is cancelled early, a unique Frenzied Voidling will spawn for 5 seconds with 30% the stats of a normal Voidling that will only attack that specific enemy champion (it will still apply Void).

So i know there is a lot to read and i appreciate anyone who read through the entire thing. If you like me to explain any of the changes i made or why i made them, feel free to ask in the comments. I would love any feedback, even negative feedback as long as it is in the form of constructive criticism.

Technically, Malz's W is the only thing in his kit not countered by QSS. His silence, malefic visions, suppression (damage still goes through if you don't move out of his range), and ignite all get removed.

The changes are pretty interesting. I noticed that you significantly increased some of his ranges. I know you said the numbers can be toned down, but i'm pretty sure part of why he hasn't been changed was because of how close range he is for a mage.

Since Malz probably would end up buying Rylai's and Liandry's at some point the slow on his W might become useless. It would be pretty useful until that point though.

Considering that he already has the longest silence in the game, increasing the duration for hitting multiple champions without dropping the duration for hitting one might be a bit much on top of the significant range increase.

I think i might need some clarification on his W interactions with the rest of his kit. Is the flat damage per tick/second or is it a one time amount? Is the % true damage a % of W or E's damage? Is the healing based off enemy hp for the duration of R or as long as they stay in W after R hits them?

Stephenizgod1 votes

Yea but like i said no one understands how useful QSS is against Malzahar, so when they complain about the gold price it irks me. It pisses me off even more when i kill them in a 1v1 and they complain about how OP i am.. first off its a 1v1 and i never said he was weak in that aspect, second they dont even have QSS which would completely cancel me...

I actually only increased the range of his Ultimate. The other ranges are from the League website sooo if they are different from what you know then thats on Riot :)

I agree with the slow being somewhat redundant or useless after a point, i didnt really know what to put other then something similar to Viktors W. My other idea was for it to reduce either their damage while standing in the Null Zone or their attack speed. Both useful in different scenarios but i think neither fitting all that well with his concept, in my opinion.

His silence is his only form of CC other then his ultimate (which roots him as well) so i figure hey reward a good Malz by increasing the silence. I think the cool down should be increased and maybe the mana cost increased though. That way you punish a bad Q. His silence is only barely longer then Cho's and much harder to hit.

Sorry i didnt do a good job of making that clear, i should have put the bonus effects onto the individual abilities. All the damages/heal are applied to the damage of that ability not Null Zone. So the Q will have additional damage, the E will do true damage, and the heal will be based off the R's duration as in how long they are ulted.

7ha7guy7771 votes

His E is 600 range, everything else is 700. Q can be extended by angling it on a diagonal i don't know how much the increase is. I believe a max range W is beyond 700 due to the center being at 700. It seems like it'd be pretty hard to make significant changes to malz due to how much synergy his kit has with itself. That's probably why he's been left alone for years and only been nerfed or buffed indirectly. I find that the people who call malz op tend to be playing champions who are hard countered by him.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Yes and ironically the people who complain the most are Katarina players lol

As for his synergy, i believe the way to buff him would be to increase its use outside of blowing up one person.

This is the League of Legends website, this is where i got my info from :) if its wrong then my bad

7ha7guy7771 votes

Either the wiki and the league info site are wrong or i've been playing malz on and off for the past 2 years thinking his max range was 700. That's really weird

Stephenizgod1 votes

It definitely does not seem like 900 range thats for sure. I use to think his ults range was 600 it wasnt until like a year ago that i learned it was bigger.

7ha7guy7771 votes

I'm going into a custom game now to try and manually check ranges using landmarks on the map. I know for a fact his ult is 700. I could have sworn E was 600 not 650. I guess i'll find out soon. Edit: wow, i guess his ranges are accurate

Posui Gart1 votes

"Oh, lets make Malzahar SO COMPLEX NOBODY WOULD UNDERSTAND HOW THAT WORKS" Ok, now about your changes: Passive-Did you remove AD scaling on voidling's damage? Also, is Void debuff consumed on proc? Q-3 seconds(max level) is already too much, and your suggestion makes it 3.5 if only 1 champion is hit, up to 5.5 seconds. It may be balanced by the fact it is hard to hit, so ok W-Did you really just removed the cap on monsters? And at 300 AP it is stronger than old, even without Void debuff and other things. With this buffs Malzahar can solo baron with a liandry+RoA+any other AP item and level18, with 500 AP Null Zone will deal 12% max hp as damage every second, for a 60% hp for whole 5 seconds, and tons of damage from passive, E and liandry's debuffs. But this kind of rescaling is actually nice. Now about that additionl effects: Void-So if voidling hits you while you are in the zone-you will take tons of damage, ok, thats actually fine Q-Not realy that much of a buff, ok again E-Is it for W damage, or E damage? Again, not that huge buff R-Ok, for 500 AP it is 8%x2.5=20% of enemy max hp as heal per ult. Ok too, maybe too strong if there is nothing to cancel that ult E-Not really needed, he already has free mana for spamming E R-so thats +100 damage for his ult and +range, but lesser damage if it is cancelled early, but it then spawns a weaker voidling

So: Lots of not really needed buffs. Looks like you wanted a reward for keeping enemies on your W as well as a reward for using voidlings carefully, and a reward for hitting your Q on more than 1 enemy, but it turned into a complex synergy of spells that would be really hard to balance

Mongoose1 votes

hes fucking trolling

Posui Gart1 votes

I prefer not to accuse people of trolling if it is not obvious. And this guy here can simply be a frustrated Malz player who gets countered by QSS every single game.

Stephenizgod1 votes

First off no one ever buys QSS even if i tell them to because im sick of their bitchin about how OP i am... Second im more frustrated at being out damaged or made irrelevant by champions with similar roles but fewer drawbacks.

Stephenizgod1 votes

No im not im very serious... but thanks for the input

Stephenizgod1 votes

Honestly its not as complex as my wall of text makes it out to be. Perhaps it would be easier if i put the Null Zone effects on their own abilities?
No i didnt, if i did it was unintentional
Obviously there is no bonus silence for hitting only 1 champion, i did think 3 seconds was too long but at the same time its not all that easy to hit when 2 champions are coming for that ass
The cap removal was a joke, honestly didnt think anyone would catch that lol good job (I like jungle malz :P)
The Q didnt need much of a buff, i put most of its power into its silence, i didnt want to undo the slight nerfs i gave it by giving it a lot of extra synergy power. The E damage obviously. Agreed with the R heal and it can be scaled back if its too much, but like i said in the post i only focused on numbers enough to not immediately discredit everything i said, im not great at balance (clearly).
He only has free mana for killing minions, but the reason i lowered it is because of how unreliable its bounce can be.
And the R changes i think fix the whole "Suppress OP" by rewarding you for cancelling it early, you take far less damage if you are quick or have good teamwork. It doesnt help Malz much though as he can already deal a ton of damage anyways so it really didnt change his R. The voidling is fun >:( and its not OP sooo....

You said it alot, not a lot of buffs, but thats my point... you can buff someone without throwing damage on them. You see a lot of unnecessary buffs but if you add them all up their utility helps him in a lot of ways. Whether he is poking down multiple people, team fighting, sieging, etc. but none of it really helps his 1v1 all that much. Im not here to make him the ultimate 1v1 mage, i wanted to help him outside of this where he is completely useless. If you are not going to give him a more reliable and safe 1v1 then improve where he is lacking in strength without removing his weaknesses. Whether i accomplished that i cant tell, thats really up to everyone else.

Posui Gart1 votes

R heal is not actually something that matters. In 1x1, after his combo he either kills or dies, in 5x5 you usually have no time to cast your W for that heal, and it is usually cancelled. While he has mana problems at early levels, they disappear once he gets his catalyst/any other mreg item, and your change only matters after E is maxed. Malzahar's problem is that he is unreliable. You can't just assassinate enemy ADC because you have low ranges and low mobility, you can't reliably poke with Q because it is hard to hit, and you can't just oneshot enemy tank with a combo because he has not that much damage unless enemy stands in null zone for full duration. However, he gets compensation. His silence can win the fight with its damage(80% scaling and 300 base, that results in 700 damage after 500 AP, and that is on not that high cd), his E can deal something like 50% of enemy ADC's hp as damage(with liandry), it has even more damage than Q and it can't miss, his W can deal like 10-20% of ANYTHING INSIDE as magic damage, and his R can oneshot that enemy ADC/midlaner if any ally throws a skillshot at him, his full combo deals so much damage LB can get lessons from Malz about oneshotting. Your changes give additional rewards while not changing that unreliability(aside from ult). I can't say if it is good or bad, but it probably won't change him much(aside from buffing his full combo even harder, i guess with full items he can kill enemy tank with 4k hp if he gets 3 voidlings, and after that he will be as hated on boards as other assassins)

Stephenizgod1 votes

Well it helps him stay in lane or in a 2v1 it helps him survive long enough to kill one person, who knows maybe both. I have been in countless situations where 100 more hp would have saved me or got me a double+.

I always throw down my W in a teamfight, at any moment you may need to ult and it helps him deal a ton of damage. I also ALWAYS throw down my W before i ult. Malz can cast all his abilities extremely quickly so i usually always get the W+R.

The problem with Malz's damage is it is DoT, meaning someone can heal they, they can cleanse/QSS/Zhonyas, someone can shield them, they can level up, an item can activate like hexdrinker, a delayed CC can knock Malz out of it, etc. So his damage is unreliable when you look at it as just numbers. LeBlancs damage is reliable, you know how much she will do roughly and as long as you land your abilities its almost guaranteed (more so then Malz's damage anyways). My changes make his 1v1 more reliable, in my opinion at least, without making it impossible to still stop him. I dont want to make him overall more reliable because i dont want him to be OP, but he does have quite a bit of short comings that are not properly rewarded. The small changes i made only effect him in small ways when used correctly (except for the Q i believe that to be the most questionable balance-wise).

Like i said, you can buff a champion without adding in raw damage or flashy effects. Its hard to say if my changes will actually help him but i know that they dont make him any more OP then people already claim (Q changes aside).

Posui Gart1 votes

Well, QSS is not a good item for most champions because it only upgrades to AD item, getting Zhonyas can kill you if misplay it (casting Q on top of enemy in stasis is great), and Cleanse can't be activated while suppressed. In fact, its not QSS but low ranges and no mobility that makes him weak and underpicked. I personally see him as counter-assassin, his kit hard counters everyone who relies on fast combos and close range, like Zed with his delayed ult will jump right into QW and possibly ER.

What I would like to see is some buff on voidlings, they are close to useless lategame. Your buff with that Void debuff is interesting, but it does not solve the problems that they are easy to kill. My idea was: if voidling is killed(not just disappeared because of duration), it will leave a small W for 5 seconds, if it was grown-it will leave usual-sized W and place weaker E(50% damage) on its killer, if it was enraged-it will leave same W, place usual E on its killer and add 1 stack to Malzahar's passive.

Maybe you should try to clear some of your spell effects, removing useless and unneeded(like that WE true damage interaction, might as well just stop the countdown for E while enemy is standing in zone, or that rescaled R damage, making it linear would make it more clear)

Stephenizgod1 votes

QSS is still a good pick against him if his ult is something you worry about, but it is not the best item for everyone and no it is not what makes Malz weak. I agree that low range and no mobility are big weaknesses but so is large mana costs early game and natural wave clear with his E so he is constantly pushing. I use him against Zed and Katarina mostly, sometimes Talon depending on how good i am doing reaction-wise.

My alternate Passive change would have been something like every Voidling out counts as 1 stack on his passive, meaning eventually you could have a horde of them lol probably not the best idea. My other option would be for them to gain permanent bonuses for killing enemies afflicted with Malefic Visions.

I wouldnt say the W+E interaction is useless but its free damage for no effort so i agree its not a good idea. Yours is a better suggestion i guess, but probably ends up as more damage overall using his full combo. The R scale damage is meant to reward the enemy for good CC timing or good teamwork and punish Malz for a bad ult if its cancelled early. It rewards a good Malz ult by dealing more overall damage though. I dont know how to word it or put it into numbers correctly or more clearly though.

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

These changes are weak and unnoticeable. His W needs to be in true damage, and we can shave off 0.1% off the base damage to compensate.

Stephenizgod1 votes

They are weak in the sense that they dont make him OP... not unnoticeable but my goal wasnt to erase weakness, only improve strengths outside of his 1v1.

The W being true damage would be quite OP i would think, Tanks would melt like butter.

i have a friend that uses Malzahar and plays all game without buying Null Zone because he says it doesn't deal any damage. i don't play him but i find very odd that someone wouldn't at least buy level 1 of a spell and be with 2 spells until level 6 and the with 3 until he is forced to buy it.

These changes seem to reinforce his personality.

Some notes:

Call of the Void: i think it's cool you have an incentive to try to hit multiple champions with it (having in mind it's really hard to do so), but im not sure the spell needs a buff.

Null Zone your change makes it so at max lvl:

8% -> 4.5% 1% -> 1.5% Ability Power % So you need to cover 3.5% with an extra 0.5% AP, in other words you just break even at 700 AP, you require 700AP for your version to deal as much damage as the old one.

Enemies effected by Void are slowed by 6/9.5/13/16.5/20% while standing in Null Zone and for 2 seconds after leaving.
Enemies hit by Call of the Void will take an additional 20/30/40/50/60 Magic Damage, this is increased by 5 Magic Damage for each additional enemy champion hit.
Enemies effected by Malefic Visions will take 7/9/11/13/15% of its damage as true damage.
Enemies effected by Nether Grasp will heal Malzahar for 1/1.5/2/2.5/3% (+[1% Ability Power]% of their max Health each second.

this is an interesting mechanic, as it incentivates combos and adds a new mechanics of "spells being cast in a zone gain extra effects"

Though with your numbers, this would be 100% OP, if you want to keep these numbers, you will have to nerf the damage on the abilities.

I would change the effects this way:

  • Voidlings in the Null Zone gain extra movement (perhaps attacks) speed.

  • Call of the Void cast on the Null Zone gains extra width and silences enemies for 0.2 secs longer.

  • Null Zone refreshes Malefic Visions's duration while the affected unit is on it, if the unit dies while on the Null Zone, Malefic Visions grant extra mana.

  • This is perhaps the most significative change: Making Nether Grasp only able to be cast on enemies stepping on a Null Zone (can last even if Null Zone wears off while channeling):

    • Advantages: Adds range & psychological zoning.
    • Disadvantages: Gives your opponents counterplay options. Requires more mechanical skill to pull off.

agbudar1 votes

your friend isn't very smart i lvl null zone second due to how much damage it does in this meta against tanks. E first since it's easy to land and makes trades/farming lane piss easy. get someone to stand on a fully lvled null zone with E proc on him ult plus ignite basically means the end of anyone due to max%hp scaling

Stephenizgod1 votes

mhm i normally max it second as well. The only time i max Q second is when i need to poke someone down from far away and my W is not helpin early game.

Stephenizgod1 votes

So thats ridiculous... depending on who i am fighting or their team comp i will max W second because the %maxhp damage can get insane. Plus its hidden damage as no one really understands how much they are taking or dont notice they are standin in it. Its a great ability but its not my favorite.

You sort of contradicted yourself by saying W damage was too weak but then said that it did too much? Its so weak because of the bonus effects it gives. It actually incentives getting it even more because of how much bonus stuff you can do with it. I wanted to turn it into utility instead of extra damage.

I do not mean to offend but your changes are a bit more useless or way more Op then mine. You ult change is... well not a good one and has absolutely no Advantages...

7ha7guy7771 votes

I typically take it at level 4. Null zone at rank 1 without ap can do up to 20% max hp damage, with 800 ap at max rank i can do 85% max hp damage and with enough magic pen, luden's and liandry's, it can 100-0 anyone stupid enough to stand in it for the full duration

Nilok1 votes

The only thing Malz needs is his code fixed, make it so voidlings don't get caught on things, maybe tie their movement speed to Malz's boots.

Stephenizgod1 votes

A difference of opinion i suppose :) that would be nice as well though. Those little rascals have some of the weirdest movements...

he just insists that the spell is a mana waste and only useful lategame because earlygame the other spells outdamage it. he also uses summoner 13 summoner 4 and has item 1027 as his first buy (what can i say, the guy likes mana)

im constantly telling him to have the 3 basic spells by level 4, start with item 1056 and buyitem 3027 instead of item 3003 .

the worse thing is he ONLY uses Malzahar for mid/top and rushes every game to get those positions "why should i learn other champion for the position if i already have one?, i better master Malzahar - he says", and uses Rengar if he is forced to jungle. but has like 90% of his games as Malzahar, 100% of mid/tops as Malzahar .

but anywho, what do you think about the changes i suggested?
