And GP didn't really always lose lane. A bad GP lost all lanes yes but a good GP landed even in all lanes, didn't win them but landed even.
What do you mean by "back in my day" back in your day GP (freshly reworked GP) was one of the most broken champions to ever see the face of League. Then he got nerfed like 7 times and stayed in that state for like 3 months until he got a small buff and later this Klepto thing.
