Tank Mordekaiser Ults 50-kill Katarina to Win the Game

LifeCyclesTWA··2 votes·2,956 views

Hey everybody, just played a game as my top lane Magic Penetration/Tank Mordekaiser. Basically, in an epic battle of Smurf vs Smurf the enemy Katarina went like 42-2 in the first 30 minutes of the game. Their team took all of our towers and inhibs, and all we could do was defend. I kept telling my team not to surrender because I would be able to kill and ult the Katarina while tanking their team once I hit full build, but the surrender votes kept coming while me and the Shaco (who kept trying to backdoor all game long) were the only ones to vote no, much to the disappointment to our teammates.

Anyways, a game that should have been a 20 minute surrender was won and we all had a game we will never forget lol. The twitch referred to it as "The Alamo" and the Katarina was so pissed lmao

EDIT: Just wanted to explain why I bought Zhonya's instead of Luden's Echo or Rabadon's or Lich Bane or whatever. Basically, you can't deal damage if you are dead. Every time Katarina would ult I would pop Zhonya's Hourglass to survive and try to ult either her or the Jinx for the kill.

First: You're not a tank, you're just building fighter Morde rather than mage Morde. You're not all that far outside of Morde's normal build path, considering his love of resistances whenever he can avoid getting bursted.

Second: Grats, but why is this really relevant?

I normally grab Randuin's, but because of that Kat I swapped out Randuin's for Zhonya's. Stasis > the defense provided by Randuin's in that situation.

Absolutely, though I personally prefer Zhonya's over Randuin's in all situations (STASIS IS INCREDIBLY STRONG). If you build pure durability on Morde, you just become an ult bot who hopes his teammates focus the same target he does and tries to become a distraction. "Tank" implies that you actually have either the CC, damage, or general threat to have the enemy team focus you combined with building durability and resistance. Morde doesn't really have the capacity almost by definition, thus he's locked into either fighter or mage.

And what about my second point? Why is this relevant? Just wanted to share the post carry high?

Durability Morde does actually do a great amount of damage, so long as you back it up with penetration. Obviously not as much as a dedicated DPSer, but a tank Mord will outdamage any bruiser out there. Magic Penetration + All of his spells being AoEs with high base damage and low CDs = win. 35% mag pen + 15 mag pen from marks and quints + 15 mag pen from boots + 20 mag reduced from abyssal scepter (can reduce mr below 0) = 35% mag pen and 50 mag pen. Void Staff + Abyssal Scepter + Sorc Boots = all the offense you need. Build Sunfire Cape early, if you get full build then sell the sunfire for either a Randuins or a Zhonyas. Thats how I build my Morde.

EDIT: Not to mention you get better use of his ghost. Your ghost gets a high % of your bonus health, and also dies when you die. Just by being alive you are doing a load of damage. Plus, CC isn't so frightening when built tank. Your ghost's attacks also build up your passive. If you ult an ADC literally become an unkillable being of death and destruction until they focus down your ghost. If they focus your ghost instead of you/your team, you just won the teamfight.

That's why I called you a fighter. Tanks wouldn't build penetration. If you built Sivir full durability, would she suddenly be a tank? Morde has zero CC, one of the most important tools for providing peel or initiation, leaving him EXTREMELY low on the utility front, where almost every tank out there excels. If I were to play Morde while building full durability (note: NOT what you're doing), what's to stop me from simply picking someone like Shyvana with comparable damage, better CC, better early laning, and an ability to take Smite/Tele for Cinderhulk?

But that's this is a completely acceptable way to build Morde. I'm not saying it's not. It's a little more durability heavy than I prefer and you're missing out on grabbing Hextech Revolver, which is an excellent item for him in laning phase, but to each his own. My personal build either starts with boots+4 pots or Doran's Shield+Pot depending on matchup, rushes hextech, and then goes for Sorc Shoes into Echo, Zhonya's, or Abyssal, with Zhonya's and Abyssal being core items. If I'm ahead, Rabaddon's next. If they're building MR, Void Staff. If I'm behind, more durability (Thornmail, Rylai's, BV, GA). Tons of damage, deceptive tankiness. My personal preference.

But you still haven't answered my question: Why post this? What's the point?

Have you heard Braum's lines?

I believe building any AP on Morde aside from Abyssal Scepter, Void Staff, and POSSIBLY the situational Zhonya's is a massive mistake. His AP ratios are total shit, he benefits enormously from building tank items. Compare his AP ratios to ANY other AP champion in the game. Building Mordekaiser AP is as ridiculous as building Shen AP. Infact, I would go as far as to say AP Shen would be BETTER than the AP Mordekaiser people run, because building a Melee Champion with 0 CC or Mobility damn-near glass cannon is beyond RIDICULOUS. I have 1k+ games as Mordekaiser, the best Mordekaiser has ever been in the League of Legends was when people built him full on tank back in 2010-early 2011 back in the League of Sunfires and when FoN was still in the game. Granted, Mordekaiser has been changed since then, but I strongly believe he regains the strength of old if built magic pen + tanky as hell. The build I ran in this game is the least tanky build I would ever run as Mordekaiser.

Anyways, why post this? I left a response for that in another comment, but here "Anyways, its less about Morde vs Kat and more about how awesome it was rallying a group of new players together and convincing them that we could win despite the fact they have a 40+ kill Katarina" .... "nothing is more scary than a fed Katarina to a new player, and being able to conquer that fear at the craziest of levels was awesome."

You were full build, and so was she.

Fight could go either way, pure damage doesn't always beat pure defense/hybrid.

I would have had a Randuin's in place of Zhonya's, but me being able to stasis whenever she'd try for the ult is what ultimately resulted in us winning the game. Anyways, its less about Morde vs Kat and more about how awesome it was rallying a group of new players together and convincing them that we could win despite the fact they have a 40+ kill Katarina. Telling them "Hey, we won this fight but their Shaco got away. Its okay, don't chase him down. Lets grab baron while their Jinx and Kat are down." etc... it was a pretty cool experience helping these guys out. Newer players don't realize KD means absolutely nothing In fact, it was stupid for Katarina to take that many kills, she could have made an effort to give kills to her team. She was a terror, she dominated her mid lane, then ganked the shit out of our bottom lane. I just kept the team trying to think positive and we eventually wound up winning. Believe me, nothing is more scary than a fed Katarina to a new player, and being able to conquer that fear at the craziest of levels was awesome.

Smurf/10. You're part of the reason the new player experience is so awful.

There are 2 kinds of smurfs, the smurfs like the Katarina that play pub-stomp champions and talk shit to new players about how superior to them they are.

Then the smurfs like me, who are just trying to level up another account and am trying to make the experience not only as pleasant as possible for the new players, but give the new players an opportunity to learn more about the game than they normally would vs other new players. It may be worth noting I got +4 honor from the enemy team, +3 Friendly from my team, and +1 Teamwork from my team after that game. I am not a shit talker, I just play Mordekaiser and enjoy helping others out.

You still cost the other team the win. If they didn't have a smurf to offset your participation it would've been a landslide.

Morde is one of the hardest champions to deal with at full build, that said it's a shame people are okay with showing their faces after smurfing.

My champion mastery for Mordekaiser is maxed out. This is a Mordekaiser only account.

Anyone else notice the Katarina never got a Void Staff? Pretty sure all AP champs lose a LOT damage when the enemy has 150+ MR without a Void Staff. lol.

I bet you think you're smart :] I was the only one on my team with over 150 MR, in this situation their Katarina was correct in building Abyssal Scepter in its place. Combined with her magic pen runes she's sitting at atleast 45 magic penetration, not including what she is getting from masteries. Look at her damage and kills, her damage wasn't her problem, it was her over-aggression and lack of wards.

Zair Umbras1 votes

It only takes 150 MR to make a Kat cry to be honest, unless you run 20 MPen in your runes, get Sorc and a Liandry's as well as a Void. Then she'll do damage, but yeeaah.
