Is there an actual reason why Thresh is a ranged champion?

His entire kit basically functions in melee range, like he only has ranged auto-attacks for the sake of being special (and for confusing people who associate ranged auto-attacks with projectiles, and the occasional person wondering why he doesn't proc Relic Shield...).

If Thresh was a melee champion, but gained attack range on Flay-charged swings (up to his current attack range at max charge), how much would this change him?

He might need a bit of a base stat buff or something, but it seems like it'd be more intuitive overall.

Probably a shitty idea to give a melee champ a passive aa buff.

As opposed to him currently being a ranged champ with a passive AA buff?

Yes it's much better. You can harass people with it as is. If he was melee he'd be garbage.

Is this because you're bad at last hitting with relic shield?

I don't even play Thresh.

I've just seen more than one person talking about how the upcoming changes to Relic Shield (specifically the halved heal when used by ranged champions) hurt him in particular, and was contemplating that.

Riot even said they were considering buffing Thresh if the changes hurt him too much, but I'm not sure what you could actually buff on him to compensate for what he loses from Relic Shield's changes.

He can't be labeled melee, because he'd have the largest natural AA range for a "Melee" and thus can pretend to be Kayle with Tiamat.

Rakan is ranged too you know?

But yes, removing FoTM passive and active shield, and now halving his heals ae big nerfs. Making him melee and letting him executing minions would be nice
