this is something that never really made sense to me, and i'd like an explanation. He's an ad champion, who charges people with a spear, why does it make sense for his e to do magic damage?

Same reason Warwick biting people does magic damage.

He uses his mana to empower him giving him the ability of flash stepping and also hitting their legs magically to slow them (think Byakugan from Naruto using his mana to influence the enemies' systems making them slower)

last time I checked this game isn't real life. not everything makes sense. how can an airplane wear boots?. how does ignite work on brand?.

Think of magic damage as Ki, or flat mana. Xin zhao isnt using a physical ability - hes using a martial ability which uses Ki.
