Riot? What is PBE for?

SwiftKitten88··70 votes·2,955 views

I dont have access to PBE i registered to try to get in but i wasnt accepted.

but i have public beta tested over 5 games (and even private beta tested a few)

so when i ask this is am sincere.

Do you even read what we write? when i beta tested Resistance 2 and resistance 3 by insomniac games. when we report a bug, it gets fixed. when we post something OP it gets addressed.

Now here when i see multiple threads and HUGE threads over 200 posts long with VIDEO EVIDENCE on how OP something is ON THE TEST REALM.

when these thread has more than 300 upvotes.

WHY DO THESE GO LIVE????

there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for XinZhao to have reached live servers in his current state.

in fact its beyond me how it even made it past internal testing to the PBE server.

there is a says that says "if its not broken.. dont fix it"

you did it withNidalee when you allowed her to jungle. she was in a perfectly balanced state and had been for 4 months with THREE viable roles and you decided to let her jungle. and it took you another 7 months before she was finally "balanced" in the jungle and you totally destoyed her ability to top mid or support in the process all of which now net a win rate of less than 35% in in those lanes just so she can have a 50% win rate in jungle.

sureXinZhao wasn't the best champ out there.. but he was simple to play.. he was fun. and although he may not have been one of the best picks. and MAYBE could use some SMALL tweaks.

YOU GO AND DO THIS???

Right now we are in an assisn meta focuing highly on AD assisns such as Zed and therefore his AD assissin counterTalon

and you releaseitem 3147 .. which not only makes the champion already too strong in the current meta even stronger.

what happened to the balance team? what happened to the REWORK team.

i remember when my mainNidalee was reworked. and it was AMAZING. she needed a few minor tweaks afterwards. but she became more fun to play allowed her more roles. and gave a much more clear way to counter-play against her

it certainly does not seem like the same balance team that redid her is here today.

why do turrets just melt when hit with ANYTHING? WHY do they do no damage to ANY champs even squishy champs once you reach around lvl 6

what is going on here? what happened to the riot i knew i loved???

XinZhao was different on the PBE than he is now on live. on the PBE there was a bug that was causing his critical damage to deal much more than the intended amount. this bug was fixed before he got sent to live, so that right there is a very good reason for riot to completely ignore all complaints about him being OP, as it was caused by a bug, which they fixed. Should they have spent a little more time testing his buff on the PBE? probably, but they'll get a much more accurate evaluation of the strength of the buff on live.

item 3147 is an item that is largely being overreacted to by everyone right now, so it is completely correct of riot to ignore the immediate backlash and complaints about it being OP, kind of like how they ignored all the complaints about how Illaoi was OP long enough for the players to figure out that she wasn't. Once item 3147 settles into place we'll be able to figure out how strong it actually is.

the rework team and the balance team are not the same team. obviously the person/people who made the Nidalee rework have absolutely nothing to do with any of the buffs or nerfs on the PBE, an they almost certainly had nothing to do with item 3147

i don't think turrets actually got any changes, it's likely that they became weaker as a result of changes to other things. people are screaming at them to buff the turrets, so i'm sure it'll happen eventually.

Plus, Riot nerfed the crit damage twice and the AD scaling once to add onto that bug fix.

Super accurate. And it also has a lot of misleading stats. I've seen people who said that the flat armor pen allowed them to shred tanks, and instead wanted to do %armor pen. And it got upvoted, despite the fact that it would let them shred tanks better, and that a fully stacked Seeker's Armguard gives positive armor against every flat armor pen in the game combined. The pop damage is a lot weaker than many people realize, and I can't tell you how many people think that it's just an AD DFG despite it having a longer cooldown, worse stats, passively activating, FAR less damage, no damage increase, etc.

the rework team and the balance team are not the same team. obviously the person/people who made the Nidalee rework have absolutely nothing to do with any of the buffs or nerfs on the PBE, an they almost certainly had nothing to do with item 3147

Correct. Repertoir, I think, made the Nidalee rework, and he's off busy with Taric and the mage update.

i don't think turrets actually got any changes, it's likely that they became weaker as a result of changes to other things. people are screaming at them to buff the turrets, so i'm sure it'll happen eventually.

They got their armor/MR removed, and got an HP increase. I don't remember any changes to their damage.

I just wanna say with Illoai that she was never OP, just complete cancer to play against. She should never had been released with the way her E worked.

Being weak doesn't excuse being absolute garbage to play against. I'm looking at you, Shaco, LeBlanc, Yorick, etc.

I don't understand how Illaoi isn't OP. Shes tanky, heals, has range, can 1v5 it seems, great damage, waveclear, and her vessel makes you have to leave lane for about a minute or try not to fight her, cs, and dodge spawning tentacles that you need to destroy all at once. I don't know what counterplay there is but to gank her often due to her mobility. If the jg doesn't do it often enough or at all, then it seems GG. Please tell me how to play against her, not why she isn't broken. There are alot of champions like Illaoi I find broke but can't find counterplay...

Tohob1 votes

anyone with either range or mobility can dodge all of her abilities and clear her tentacles easy. an Illaoi can 1v5 just like Nunu and Singed can 1v5. she relies on her opponents to stay in the middle of her ult and try to fight her to 1v5, just like Nunu relies on people standing in his ult and Singed relies on people chasing after him. Illaoi can't even 1v1 against a player who can kite. all you have to do is walk away from her, and she doesn't have the mobility or the CC to do anything about it.

Arakadia2 votes

So if I'm melee I should just play safe in lane phase and take out squishies in teamfights, as say.... jax. If im not mobile same thing kinda, but maybe flank and stay away from allies so her ult doesn't hit her. Thanks, this helped even though its not that complex. I just have trouble when its two she melees trying to fight her: Im nasus and my jungle is Vi lets say, then she kinda crushes us.

Tohob1 votes

as Nasus you'd likely want to buy item 1001 really early so you can stay out of the way of those tentacles, and just use your passive lifesteal to sustain away the damage she deals to you, and just keep farming those sweet Q stacks. ganking Illaoi is an interesting dance, as you often have to bait her into using her ult and then back off, circle around, and immediately gank a second time as her ult wears off. Vi can take her down, but you need to play smart and keep away from the tentacles. generally keeping the lane as tentacle-free as possible will give you a huge advantage against her (which is why ranged champions shine so much vs her, as they can clear them super safely)

also protip: Nasus can stack Q off of her tentacles c;

Arakadia1 votes

Aww snap! Thanks man!

Captain Aishi1 votes

I personally found out that shyvana lanes really well against illinois, because her Q can instakill tentacles, her W gives her enough movespeed to dodge tentacle smashes, and most beautifully, you are almost immune to her E when your abilities are ready. when she pulls your spirit, you e her, activate your W, autoattack and Q her and the spirit is gone, because E, W on-hits with aa+Q= 9 instances of damage making the spirit disappear instantly :)

and when she jumps in the air for her ult animation, you instantly ult out and wait for it to expire

TahmKench Expert2 votes

I wish riot stuck it out for Tahm like they did for Illaoi.

Xela Syab1 votes

are you drunk? Illaoi is pretty broken. Tanky like renek with poke like Zyra who thought that was balanced.

ModWulf Helhammer15 votes

Testing for larger bugs and skin feedback mainly. Population is too small to make rely on info from PBE to make balance changes

Sinister Anubis8 votes

Thats riots fault for deleting peoples accounts because the pbe so called was overloaded at that time. Pfft ya right.

Sypher The Poro1 votes

Try logging on to PBE after a rework or new champion release. Better make sure you have 4-5 hours set aside, so it is still pretty overcrowded when 90% of those players never play PBE otherwise.

Bolwinkel2 votes

You couldn't even play a solo bot game when jhin was released on PBE just because ~90% of the people who only play on PBE for new champs/reworks were on then. I still don't understand how it can be a "Public" test realm if it isn't even public. You have to be accepted. I honestly think only those on their main accounts that are plat and above should be allowed on the PBE. Why? Because they have a much much better understanding of the game then those in the lower ranks so they will know what they're talking about when giving feedback instead of just "OMFG SO BROKEN FIX PLS". Also so then it would greatly reduce the number of players on the server so that when a new champion comes out, the servers won't break.

Sinister Anubis1 votes

Iv never had this issue and I had a pbe account since before pulsefire ezreal. You sure it's not the computer or the broken patch.

Bolwinkel1 votes

1st. I didn't understand most of what you said 2nd. Riot made it so you couldn't make a custom bot game with just yourself. You had to have 2-3 people in it. 3rd. Why the fuck would my computer have anything to do with connection problems?

Sinister Anubis1 votes

Because if your computer sucks it will have issues connecting to a server. Duh also don't take that bs attitude with me i gave you legit answer. And finally go be rude to someone else. Also you can make customs with just your self i still do it to this day on live. idk bout pbe. Next time you want to get a attitude tell it to someone who cares.

Bolwinkel1 votes

Well seeing as to how you've edited your previous post to now be understandable. Your computer has nothing to do with your connection. It does however have something to do with your fps. Your internet/location is what causes you to have issues with the server. Or it's just on the servers end and not yours. I said, in both posts, that you couldn't make a solo bot game when Jhin was released on PBE because of the overhaul on the server. Next time you want to be illiterate, don't.

Sinister Anubis1 votes

tip for you don't play pbe then. also it does have to do with your computer and the broken patch. its why its called pbe. I edited my post because i replied to you from my phone and it didn't like me typing pbe. So anyways you didn't say anything about not being able to make customers on pbe you just stated it in general. Oh next time stop being rude and inconsiderate towards others you might have a better conversation.

Igotlazy1 votes

You should have seen the traffic the PBE was getting right after Ekko's release. Hour long wait times and constant crashes due to so many people trying to log on. Whole thing was a mess the first day. It's really not too hard to overload the PBE, trust me.

ModCaptainMårvelous8 votes

Ok, here's the thing (and this question gets asked a lot): The PBE -isn't- for balance changes.

"B-but why-" Because the average PBE player is bad. Just as the average league player is bad, 9/10 players on the PBE are garbage who don't test products. They don't provide feedback that's meaningful. "Nerf this cuz it's broken" or "this buff sucks change it" without providing context. The PBE is primarily a place where bugs and errors are fixed.

Do bugs make it past? Yeah, but that's true of any game. You don't see the game utterly crashing for everyone every single patch so, in that way, it does its job. However, balance tests are to make sure a new buff/nerf doesn't crash the game or completely make the champion unplayable in a base sense of the word.

Balance changes are pushed to test them in a live environment to see how they react. It's only through mass testing that they can get a feel for how things are going. Does this mean that there will be imbalance? Yeah but that's true of everything. League has never been in a state of overwhelming balance. There are high and low periods but never never perfect balance. This is also why the PBE isn't for balance changes: Riot can only get a feel for the changes when they're in a live environment with a ton of people winning/losing/giving feedback. PBE doesn't even come close.

PS: They balance around high-tier play. Xin might stomp in low ELOs where people don't know how to counterjungle or deal with Xin but in high ELOs he's still a pretty meh pick. There comes a point where you stop asking for nerfs and start questioning what YOU could do better as a player.

Count Zubat7 votes

PBE exist mainly so streamers and youtubers can show off new champions and skins before they hit live. At least that's how it looks like right now.

The Sword Saint5 votes

Blame the people who leak shit from pbe so consistently and in such an organized manor that Riot can't afford to bring anything to pbe that isn't basically a final product since all the players are going to be looking at it instantly.

You'd see more experimental ideas and earlier stage work that could potentially pivot and change much easier if we didn't have place like surrender@20 influencing pbe to become more or less an early showcase of upcoming content rather than a place to find and test bugs and try out ideas that probably wont make it into the game.

The Rewritten6 votes

Or Riot could break the habit of pushing a large percentage of content straight out of PBE despite multiple instances of highly upvoted threads against it from various sources.

We would not freak out if there wasn't a high percentage of it going to live despite us voicing our concerns.

Retillin5 votes

This^. I would say Riot should try to DOUBLE their changes per week on the PBE. Toss out some really crazy stuff to try, but then only release 1/4th of the things they put out. And/or increase the time changes are on the PBE before being released to live.

I dont consider Talon to be a Zed counter. Zed has too much built into his kit to just out duel talon I find it to be a skill matchup

yah i never understood that people also think going into stealth as talon will save them from a zed ult.......like wut seriously?

Owltears2 votes

I got into the beta this year, and I left it because Riot RARELY listens/responds to comments about champs unless there's DOZENS of posts about it in the already TINY beta player pool. The que for ANYTHING is normally over 15+ minutes and somehow still the most toxic people get stuck in it (though rarely).

The only thing I've seen them actually do was implement Mandrake Wards and them remove them because there was an error in the coding that allowed you to place an unlimited amounts of wards if one mandrake was on the field by your placing.

PBE is to showcase what is coming and to fine the MASSIVELY HUGE BLATANT Bugs that Riot's "Test Team" didnt find.
That and to troll as hard as you can.

Any constructive/critical thoughts on changes are ignored.

Twitch Chat2 votes

PBE is populated almost entirely by terrible players and the number of people on the server is extremely small so matchmaking isn't very good. If you see a video from PBE or play a game there you have to remember that there is always going to be a large gap in skill between the best and worst players in any game. Overall its a generally terrible place to test for balance so riot's decision to not really take any balance related feedback from PBE is not a bad decision. All the bugs that get reported and still get through to live are annoying though.

Keep in mind that the PBE continually pushed for skarner buffs until he was literally the strongest hero ever released.

Iqqi2 votes

Clearly not for testing. See this is were you really see just how dumb they are. Clearly their PBE members do not represent the 90% of their players. Just another example of how stupid they are. Really hope they dont have kids. Have enough idiots on this planet already.

Numb3rs2 votes

PBE is for lucky people who want to use free skins and play new champions before they get released. hardly anybody even reports "bugs"9

Jungle Lux God1 votes

The Public Beta Environment is there to test to make sure bugs that completely break the game do not get onto live. Bugs that crash the game are the most important piece of new content that doesn't get onto live, and the PBE is there primarily to catch those kinds of bugs.

It's not there to test game balance. Using the PBE to test balance changes is like using an indoor swimming pool to test a surfboard; you can take whatever feedback you get, but it won't give useful feedback until it actually gets taken out for the real deal (live for balance changes or the ocean for surfing). It's just not possible to get the balance right on the PBE.
