Why do you play support?

I see board posts all the time asking for a different/improved "role" for the support. I don't get what is so bad or desperately is in need of change. It is a lower income, potentially lower damage, utility based role. If you want to deal massive amounts of damage or spend most of your time in the jungle and between lanes, or go for a high kill count, PICK A DIFFERENT ROLE TO PLAY. The support role's job is utility driven so anything extra is meant to be taken as a bonus. You should not go for kills unless you are the only way to Finnish off a target, you can do just fine with assist gold.

Jobs for the support:

  • ward with a sightstone based item (while not the only, you are the main warder because you are suppose to help by SUPPORTING the team, not carrying them. plus your build is far more suited for those items than any of the 4 others who could use that 6th slot for an item more suited for their role)
  • clear enemy wards
  • protect carries (mainly the ADC since you lane with them)
  • use some items to help the team if needed (these are a few good choices item 3512item 3060 item 3109 item 3222 item 3107 item 3504 item 3050 or item 3190)
  • look to help teammates if they need it, while not abandoning the one(s) you are already helping (dont roam top/mid without your adc for a gank if your ADC is not fully able to 1v2 and win, or you have not yet won/lost the lane)
  • make situations for your teammates to get ahead or to turn a fight if you are losing one
  • look to bail your teammates out if possible (even if you die instead)

#These are some the responsibilities that come with the support role, if you don't like them, play a different role.

Personally I play support because you control a lot of the power flow in the game. Champions like Blitzcrank Nami Morgana Thresh are very strong regardless of if they are fed or not because their kits provide the CC/survivability needed to turn fights, make picks, and just be useful regardless of their K/D/A.

Why do I play support?

Originally because my favorite champion at the time got nerfed into the support role. Then because I found I was really good at. Now because it's easily my best role, and I don't trust other players at it.

I'm better at it than other stuff because I'm teamplay oriented, I like the strategy aspect of games, and I enjoy the kick you get out of stuffing people's attempts to do stuff. Kinda the same reasons I played tank and heals in WoW, even in PVP.

Supports are super fun to play. Some people get hype about making big plays and getting penta kills and blah blah blah. What brings me joy is playing a support like Janna to negate any possible playmaker and turns the play into an awkward situation for the enemy. Some people like playing Shaco, I like playing play-negating supports. We're equally despicable >:D

I also like going in pair with another person (hence, ADC). I play multi roles but support always gives me the most positive outlook of a game because you never know what you can accomplish.

Taking out-of-meta champions to support also refresh the experience of playing LoL. Neither you or the opponent truly knows the outcome of it and it's just fun that way.

Mage supports are also hella fun.

ADC supports are also hella fun.

Tanks supports... Ehh.

Assassin supports are hella fun.

See, I enjoy people like you. People like you are the exact reason I play things like support lb, as the hatred that occurs when I outdamage both the adc and jg is just something that can't be enjoyed elsewhere.

As for the topic, you're kinda going about this all wrong. The whole idea of the "support" is to get the team ahead by any means neccessary. If it means bringing cc/tank stats, then that can work. If it means doing a decent chunk of damage because your adc is bronze 5 0/10/0 material and can't get kills any other way than to finish off 98% damaged targets, then that works as well. Ultimately, if your support has decent warding and can get your team ahead, why should you question their means of doing so?

While I don't agree with everything in this post, pretty well done for the most part. I am a d2 support main thresh 1 trick. I play support cuz thresh is broken and I have a 67% winrate in 670 games across my 4 accounts which are all plat1+. If you find a champ you're good at stick with it lol.

you can feed your ass off as support but your utility will always be the same, the only difference is. how much you heal or shield: Nami, Sona, Soraka, and Janna

Utility Will always be strong throughout the game if you play someone like: Bard, Taric, Blitzcrank, Thresh, Leona, Alistar,Zyra

and tanks will be tanks: Leona, Thresh, Alistar,Taric

point is, support is not for everyone but is very unique because you can fuck up early game but still be significant to your team, unlike a Nunu who goes 0/27 at 15 minutes

As a support, you are only as good as the carry you are supporting, that is why it feels frustrating sometimes.
