You can't 1v1 them if you're not fed as fuck. They're tanky but can kill you in 1-2 seconds. Even if you 1v2, 1v3 them, they're probably gonna take someone with them. Try playing against a trinity/bloodrazor/rageblade jax.... who can kill him ? you literally can't AA him for 3-4 seconds with his E and stun, but that doesn't matter 'cuz youre dead anyway in 1-2 seconds.

Irelia has a 46% winrate and 5% playrate, she is not anywhere near what anyone would call "strong".
And even pre sterak nerf her burst wasnt really that impressive, what made her good was her ability to engage from a rather long distance away despite being a melee and keep targets from escaping instantly.-
Jax is better though, at a 51% winrate and near 7% pickrate for top alone, although he is somewhat worse in the jungle with less win and pickrate.
What does Jax do? He likes his 1v1, and thats it.
Jax is only a bit better than Tryndamere when it comes to dealing with organized enemies since his E doesnt block AOE or single target abilties meaning that most mages and tanks can keep him locked down.
So sure, you´ll get boned trying to 1v1 the guy unless playing something like Tryndamere and getting some items, but the game isnt all about 1v1s and even splitpushing isnt that great at this time.
OP you ought to be complaining about Fiora more, she has max % health true damage that scales hard with AD and if she gets near you its near impossible to get away from her.
She can also block every ability in the game with her W when its working right.
She even beats both Jax and Irelia fairly easily x)

Look at her lane kill rates mid lane- in the vast majority of matchups it's above 60%. Playing against her makes you feel so helpless, because no matter how hard you beat her early, once she gets sheen and tri she can kill you with ult easilly.

Irelia is a diver specialized on gapclosing with the added touches of survival and the ulti for lockdown.
For most mages who have the win condition of never letting enemies get near them, thats the same as facing a living nightmare.
The issue here isnt really irelia, the issue is just how horrifyingly bad the older mages are at dealing with the ever rising mobility, when half your damage is given through skillshots and burst you are just by definition helpless when someone has easy means to gapclose and deny your return fire.
And while Assassins would just jump around or go untargetable to the same effect, Irelia throws out her ulti and then stuns then the target is slowed.
Added with the bonus fact that Irelia even pre nerf was bad in melee matchups.......well no wonder she is sitting mid screwing with mages, those are just about the only ones she can go after at all.

false, she has a low winrate because she is so horrifyingly bad early game because of the passive nerfs. It's hard not to get poked down. And you're wrong actually, Irelia only has over a 50% wr against 4 midlane champs 
3 of them being worse than Irelia and 1 of them being more of a jungler than a midlaner. Her banrate is also decreasing, it was 98% before the nerfs now it is 50%. In a week or two it will only be 10-20%.

They have mobility juggernauts lack, are comparatively less reliant on their conditional bonus damage set ups and tend to offer more mixed/ true damage.
The problem occurs when snowballing levels gives them inherent durability on top of everything else.

i think people build because it's on (at least jg jax) essential items in the shop.
Anu3isII1 votesNo. People build it because they are actually smart enough to realise that Jax scales well with all the stats the item offers, making him one of the few champs who can build it viably.
Why it isn't a core item? One reason is that is such a powerful item in the early/mid game, that you have to rush it. Both of them are pretty expensive, so it is generally hard to get both while fighting people who achieved their two items spikes much faster.
Another reason is the whole meta, where even Tanks can be bursted. Jax is a melee fighter that tries to both murder people and survive the opponents' burst, making bonus HP much more valuable than Sustain through Omnivamp. This is why he started building these 
almost every game.
I personally like the item, but I wouldn't build it unless Tank meta comes back or Damage decreases significantly.
