As a long term Nasus main since s2, I think it's time to rework Nasus

HateDaddy··91 votes·6,540 views

There's just no reason to play him anymore. Everything he hopes to do with farm is done better and more consistently by other fighters. In the past, when fighters were good, the upside of managing to get farm on Nasus was god tier mode late game with a 95% AS/MS slow, incredibly hard to kill, 700 range on wither and great front lining.

This was season 2 Nasus and the rewards were worth the risk of you managed to get farm. But since then, a lot of things have changed. He's been nerfed hard and never compensated one bit for any of those nerfs. The game has become ridiculously even more mobile while also granting these mobile champions CC to kite and stay away from Nasus indefinitely. He has no means to drain tank front lines because armor stackers on front lines reduce the effectiveness of Lifesteal meaning his one source of recovering health is heavily countered. The 600 HP on ult he gets is just another auto attack from a full build carry. He has no defensive steroids, no mobility, his strengths have been stripped away and he's a shell of his former self. It's why he hasn't been picked at all this season in competitive play and won't be.

I am convinced at this point, a rework is much better than buffs. The only thing I see buffs doing is pushing him to a point where he's just a wall of stats you can't overcome and quite frankly, that's bullshit. I don't want my champion to be Irelia 2.0. And honestly, when he has been good, that's kind of what he was. So I can't see a scenario where you buff him with his current kit and put him in a state where he's worth playing unless you buff him so hard, he just becomes a walking wall of destruction you can't deal with. Riot has gone away from that concept and has for awhile.

I am convinced you can keep his stacking Q mechanic in place. It doesn't even necessarily have to be an infinite stacking mechanic but it does need to be something worth stacking because at his core, that is his identity. Wither as a point and click disable probably just needs to go, I suspect you can turn this spell more into a mobility/MS boost spell that is granted additional effects from other spells - as an example, if Nasus casts wither on you and hits you with Q, your AD is reduced by 15% or something along those lines while having a different spell effect with E. I think his ult is honestly fine as it is, it was a spell that was honestly ahead of its time when it was made. I also think a HP% return on his W isn't out of the question so he can actually drain tank front lines in some facet.

I suspect this won't be popular amongst other Nasus mains, but the truth is after playing a lot of Jax lately, I just see no reason to ever play Nasus again. It's too frustrating. And I hate that because he's my favorite champion and I just want him to be good but not overbearing. And I just don't see a way his current kit can ever be good without it being overtuned as hell to compensate for how much this game has indirectly shit on his existence with CC/mobility galore attatched to every kit.

I also realize he's not even close to a priority to rework because there are others who've waited much longer and need it just as much, if not more. And they've been in line much longer, too. But I am at a point where I see no other options for him other than a full-on rework.

I want to say that I'd like the R to give him 20/30/40% bonus health for some odd seconds with the usual damage to those near him. If Nasus gets 1000 health, that gives him 200 bonus health at level 1 R, and if he gets 4000 health at level 18, his R will give 1600 bonus health for some odd seconds. (As a added bonus, if he lost any health before the ultimate, he can regenerate the missing health from what bonus health is left and he loses no health when being attacked because of the bonus; he can lose health but you have to get rid of the extra 20/30/40% health first.)

So they're encouraging him to AFK farm even more? Isn't Nasus's Q buggy on one of his skins anyways since that buff though? Which may or may not of been a buff according to some Nasus players?

Huh?

I'm not aware of any bug particular to a skin, and I have all of them. His Q was terribly bugged last patch but it was fixed

They should rework him into a Bot Lane support.

Passive - Marked player is the dog's owner. They gain some bonuses to armor and Mr while near each other.

Q - Throw cane at enemies while telling them to get off your lawn and briefly stunning the hit targets.

W - Bark a bunch, giving an aoe headache to enemies within range that causes a brief fear.

E - Create a zone on the ground that siphon health from enemies and heals allies who stand in it

R -

Passive - Nasus gains bonus damage reductiin for being near his owner.

Active - For a few seconds all effects (damage cc etc) that would hit the the doge's owner hits Nasus instead. If the amount of damage redirected kills Nasus, he gets rabies and is put down by his owner granting the kill gold and exp to his owner instead of the enemy team.

He just a painful jackass to deal with all game, I just dread playing against him, not because he is overpowered or anything the lane is just boring as hell, and you don't ever win it, you just delay the inevitable. What fun is going into a lane knowing you already lost?

I was going to respond to this with an actual reply until I saw your last sentence, which is incredibly stupid.

Ad hominem son? To a valid argument and not a post ass licking you like 95% of the others? Nasus is one of the 5 infinitely scaling champions in the game, one of the 2 whose damage doesn't cap(Nasus Veigar). He's a ticking time-bomb. He WILL get out of hand eventually, no matter what you do. Same with Sion, he can suck ass, but still, 5.4k HP is a lot of trouble to go through. Laning against him is boring, because the only thing he was to promote counterplay, is his E. Q is an autoattack, W is point and click. Tons of interaction, when all you can do is just "stay away".

That is his and Veigar gameplay gimmick, you don't let them get out of control.

Sion is similar but his is more so he get bulkier infinitely.

They are more passive laners you need to bully out.

Plus like juggernauts, for Nasus at least, he can easily be kited even with a 40% CDR to help his W.

All I know is, I got to 1129 AP with veigar yesterday, and I hadn't played him for a year and a half. Pressed R, literally one-shotted the enemy xerath.

All I know is, a 40%cdr Nasus, with 800 stacks, trinity force and a bloodthirster, can heal for 1500 HP per Q.

Well I would first ask why they got to 1129 AP and 800 stacks.

Transgressor1 votes

There's nothing to ask, yesterday, in a normal as 5 premades, I managed to get 1080 stacks at 38 minutes, and I still couldn't carry. I lost that Veigar game as well. I got my ass handed to me by that yasuo. ended up 13/7/8, and one-shot everyone appart from the enemy braum. Eventually, I got out of control. There was no point in losing lane. I used 5 teleports to go back to lanes for cs instead of teamfights. All I had to do was stack, buy items, and prepare. And the fucking commenced. Same with Veigar. It got to a point, when all I had to do was press one button.

They both need tuning down. Perhaps they could lose some stacks every time they die, like item 3041 item 3141 , so that there would be a purpose to shutting them down appart from an artificial delay? They both got massive sustain, paired with no legitimate damage cap.

he just becomes a walking wall of destruction you can't deal with. Riot has gone away from that concept and has for awhile.

They have? Mordekaiser Garen Darius Skarner seem to indicate otherwise. In fact, they seem more open to the "giant tanky ball of destruction you can't deal with" than ever. Two days ago I watched a slightly-ahead Skarner run into a 1v3 and come out with a triple kill against Lucian, Olaf, and Shen. Nasus is in fact a perfect Juggernaut candidate. Hopefully if they do that, they'll have figured out how to balance these things by then.

I don't think Skarner needed that change for reference. As for Darius, I think his means to survive in teamfights is an awesome mechanic. Is he possibly overtuned still? It's hard to say, he's always banned lol. I don't think Garen is even good anymore honestly, now that you aren't the villian for killing him in lane, he's easily dealt with. His entire lane phase compared to old is much worse overall in exchange for a potentially better late game. As for Morde? Eh...no comment.

Whether they're balanced or not isn't the point, the point is that they are intended to be giant walking walls of destruction that are simultaneously supertanks and damage dealers. When they're strong or ahead, they're not like ADCs or mages that you can catch out of position, CC, and burst down, you have to spend tons of time and resources chain-CCing them and slowly burning them down, and if they have their team with them they become impossible to deal with. That's what they're meant to be (ok, Garen less so, but the others fit that mold perfectly), and it's what they would be even if they were balanced. Nasus fits the same exact mold, he's just less effective than they are; in fact, I'd go so far as to say that Nasus is the original Juggernaut, the first Juggernaut-style champion that was ever added to the game long before Riot had to idea to rework this bunch of champions.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not making a "nerf juggernauts" post.

Nasus is still a nightmare late game. It doesn't matter if you clense his wither, every good Nasus runs summoner 6 and summoner 12 . At 500 stacks, with item 3078 , he can virtually two shot just about any squishy.

Maybe he's not as overbearing as he once was, but that's good. League is a team game, so relying on your team to provide some CC long enough for you to get close is expected. You can't be 1v5 call of duty 360 no scope anymore, which is good.

Yea no. It's so far from that, that it sucks. Nasus gets shit in 1v1 (!) by a bunch of sated devourer junglers, and I have lost duels with a triforce+full tank or triforce + lw + full tank build with more than 1k stacks against Yi's and Shyvana's (Shyvana had a lot of armor though, but that Yi just had too much damage, it was stupid. I had thornmail, 300+ armor and 3k + hp, bitch pls still lost).

And he gets really melted late. Nasus is hardly a menace lategame and that sucks. League might be a team game, but the fact Nasus can't soak up much doesn't make him that much of a good pick.

And about being overbearing. Honestly not really. When I played Nasus in season 2 before his buffs, he was really considered trash, despite his godlike lategame.

You basically AFK farm lane (Your jungler will usually camp you if you have a good team, basically nullifying anything the enemy top laner does against you). You build PURE tank and can out trade people by dropping a 20 mana cost abiliy that's point click. Nasus is just a 0 skill champ honestly.

NOOO, the problem is NOT Nasus, the problem is the hyper mobile champions with super long range, and cc on every ability, and massive damage, and free fucking GA that has 130% AP scaling in AOE damage. Ekko is the embodiment of what should have never been released. I get what you're saying but Nasus isn't the problem, its champions like Ekko, andKalista, and Yasuo, not to mention** Fiora**, all the Juggernauts, and every sated devourer Jungler. Nasus is fine, if anything they need to put a cap on his stacks, its all the bullshit that riot has released and made this game into a pick this champion or buy this item to guarantee a win type game.

Sasogwa3 votes

Well, what's annoying with Nasus is that he's not really the good old lategame champion it once felt really good to play, because back then in season 2 he really had a trash laning phase. His manacosts were really high too. His laning was abysmal. But he was so good in lategame. But it was also the items, the champions... He felt actually really tanky and his wither was very strong against ADC's. Now it's easily dealable with a Mercurial or Crucible and the attack speed is slow is so much weaker than it used to be. Despite it being very obnoxious as a spell, his Wither kinda made him have a great teamfighting. He also used to take Shurelia to compensate his lack of mobility and it was very nice. Right now, tankiness is shit compared to what it was back then. There is true damage and %health everywhere, AD carries are super strong, crit itemization and AP itemization are very strong... Nasus is just plain bad in lategame teamfight, and it's really sad.

However, he's really viable right now. His laning is actually pretty strong, and his midgame is ridiculously strong if well farmed. He can put huge pressure by splitting and can teamfight midgame when people don't quite melt him or kite him too hard yet.

But it doesn't feel as fun as it did. When you play Nasus, you're looking to have a nightmarish laning with huge reward, and not really staying all game long top. You wanna be like, having a challenging laning but being able to come back huge in fights. Right now, you just split all game with a safe laning. It's sad

Well a big part of that was the calculation changes on resists. Back then, resist stacking made anything tanky, not so much now. Riot has done a fairly good job of granting true tanks a very good method of being innately durable with %reduction damage, resist steroids, shields and such. Nasus doesn't fit into any of this because at his core, he isn't a tank - he's a fighter. He's not going to be nearly as tanky as a true tank, nor should he be, but he doesn't offer much else either past a certain point. It's why I said a mechanic of %HP return on his Q vs champions isn't a bad idea, this means he can actually drain tank front lines.

However, he's really viable right now. His laning is actually pretty strong, and his midgame is ridiculously strong if well farmed. He can put huge pressure by splitting and can teamfight midgame when people don't quite melt him or kite him too hard yet.

No, he's really not. I don't care what stats say, he's completely garbage now. Fighters destroy him in lane and rush BC, making his FH Rush significantly less effective. 3 patches ago, this mid game God tier level was a real thing and frankly it's always been that way since s3. But that simply isn't the case anymore. And more over, why even bother taking a risk to play a champ that loses to so many fighters when you can just pick a fighter and be more impactful more consistently? Again, there's just no reason to play him and the risk of playing him isn't worth the reward.

But it doesn't feel as fun as it did. When you play Nasus, you're looking to have a nightmarish laning with huge reward, and not really staying all game long top. His lane phase is meh at best. Sure, you can play incredibly passive and slowly farm up, but doing this means you're allowing your lane opponent to do the same. At this point, even by mid game, he's likely going to be far more impactful than you are. So what are you even farming for? Just to become a salty split pusher and hope to make it to 45 minutes + where you can be so farmed you can just face tank towers? That's lame anyway you slice it.

Drain Tanking as a mechanical goal is generally hard to balance and usually just ends up in frustrating. Its just a stat check. If you drain more than the enemy can deal in damage, then he will be a brick wall, hammering to the nexus. If he cant drain enough, he will do nothing, getting ignored. Id say, remove his sustain and auto target CC, and give him some real strength.

But I am at a point where I see no other options for him other than a full-on rework.

A rework into what though? Late game he's the guy who chunks down towers and one hits the poor sona player. I mean he's also got CC, but he can never go bot because he needs to farm, so that shouldn't change either. I was looking at the wiki page for anubis and despite being commonly depected, he's got few stories around him and no personality so there's not much to go on there. Well, he could build either item 3035 or item 3071 to reduce the armor he has to deal with and make his Q hit harder.

In theory, he could. But he needs to basically focus his entire build on being as tanky as possible or having items that help him deal with his weaknesses like Trinity as an example

I thought his core gameplay was hit Q, chunk down a tower.

That's what it has become, which is kind of lame. He was once a monster team fighter but nerfs after nerfs and the game going in a different direction have changed that and forced him into the role of an AFK split push bot.

I can see riot turning wither into a skill shot, but I don't see them giving him extra mobility. It and his aoe skill were meant to counter champs with mobility instead of making him go faster.

I think they'll get rid of the AS slow entirely, it's kind of the direction they've gone in when theyve reworked anything with an attack speed slow. I think his W/E are spells that can have a lot of cool effects, even if it doesn't give him mobility - it can give him other uses.

A rework into what though? Late game he's the guy who chunks down towers and one hits the poor sona player. I mean he's also got CC, but he can never go bot because he needs to farm, so that shouldn't change either. What? Lol an enlightened intellect with an ass kicking mean streak? There's plenty go on. But aside from that, you can remove him as this AFK split pusher and give him a teamfight presence again that isn't a point and click slow into one shotting something. That's inconsistent and lame to play as and against.

So what should he be reworked into since all he is is the late game tower chunker?

I think he could be molded more into a drain tanker, a better one innately and not so much dependent on items he can't really afford to build. He can still offer utility and be more of a clean up role after he's front lined as opposed to press ghost, press R and b-line for their carry.

I don't know how I feel about drain tanks. Fiddlesticks is annoying. The only reason ADCs aren't drain tanks is IE is so much better and OP on them. I remember when BT was the rush item on them. Fiddlesticks is a pretty bad example, not to mention he's hardly a drain tank if you focus CC on him. Drain tanking is a good way for an immobile champion to maintain relevance and durability through fights as opposed to stacking defenses and just kind of being there. This doesn't necessarily require a rework, just something to make him more consistent

Not going to mention how his base Armor is horrible compared to Garen, Darius or Skarner? AND they nerfed Frozen heart/Thornmail, which are too expensive for him to buy now because his income is only farm until he gets strong enough. AND they nerfed Frozen heart/Thornmail, which are too expensive for him to buy now because his income is only farm until he gets strong enough. And at that point it is too late and there are a million counters out there for Nasus. And yeah he has no tank steroids like a sheild or damage reduction or stats. His ult just makes ADCs, and anyone who has %HP damage shred him even faster. item 3153

I'm fine with his base stats being worse, but I just think he needs a better mechanic to be durable and establish his presence in fights than to stack armor items/magic resist/HP

Well Riot said he is a juggernaut and probably the Original design or thought process of what a juggernaut should be. But their last reworks are filled with stats and steroids so much that Nasus is a joke unless his other laner is AFK. Hes bad stat wise and from armor being nerfed and other bruisers/juggernauts being buffed to hell.

he can still trade with ease against some match ups

While I have not mained Nasus as long (only since S3), I think he is in a very delicate spot to rework. Personally, there are two things I would want out of such an event:

  1. Q stacking stays. This is what defines Nasus when everyone thinks about him, and this is what should stay unchanged.
  2. I want him to be the pinnacle definition of bad early, god late game. I remember when Renekton was the meta top laner and that feeling of dread for the first 9 levels or so. Or hell, that feeling in your gut you get when you realize that you have to lane against Vladimir . That feeling you get as you outfarm and outscale them after getting your shit kicked in early on is what I live for, and what should be strived for if they rework him.

Remove his passive. It's bs in 1v1s and for poking him. Youre supposed to poke him out of lane but he has crystalline flask, teleport, hp pots, and a lifesteal passive. I have played nasus, I can win any matchup, even darius. Just need full tank and bait his q to push the minions to your tower. You become a splutpush god and if you can tele into a teamfight and flank them he wrecks. Passive should go.

While it eventually becomes a good means of sustain, early game it does jack shit since they nerfed it. It isnt until level 9 and about 100 stacks that it really plays apart in his lane sustain.

Hm... I'll brainstorm a few ideas. All random suggestions that have nothing to do with each other.

#Passive

  • Truesteal - Basically like the new WotA, his basic attacks and Q will proc lifesteal equal to the amount of damage he would have done before resistances. Only problem with this is that it kills some of the synergy with Hydra. Perhaps have him apply it on all physical damage dealt then? Anyway, moving on.
  • Completely New Passive? - removal of this passive in favor of a new one (possibly move this one to Q if it is absolutely needed).

#Q

  • Added Cripple Effect - If you've spent awhile on these boards you may have heard this suggestion tossed around a few times. Basically what it does is temporarily disable the afflicted target's dash/blink/self-displacement abilities. This definitely would not belong on Wither, that'd just make Wither broken. It'd be more balanced attached to Q. This effect would last 1 second and possibly have a rapidly decaying slow (talking like, from 30% -> 0% over 0.5 seconds or something) attached to it in order to emphasize and better communicate the fact that it cripples. (Maybe have some sort of icon for it as well)
  • Cooldown Unaffected by CDR--Stacks Reduce CD - This would open up more build paths to him, allowing him to diverge from FH and SV as mandatory rush items (though CDR is only half the reason he builds those items, but still, more options). As to how much CDR is granted per stack I don't know, but it could tie into this:
  • Gain New Effects in a Stack Tier System - Effects like the above mentioned ones. Personally think they should come at the cost of some damage on Q or perhaps just a limit on Q's max damage.

#W

  • Remove - Removing this would solve many problems, as you said, but this is such an iconic skill of his that I'd hate for it to come to that
  • Wither Cloud - As it sounds, it instead creates a controllable Wither pet cloud like Viktor's ult that increases the potency of the slow for every second a target remains in it. Size could increase with level. This will, however, remove its reliability as a targeted shut down ability. But maybe that's what's needed.
  • Wither AoE - Instantly applies Wither to all targets in cone/circular area/line in front of him. Would still be basically unavoidable, retaining the reliability of it but also allowing him to apply it to more targets. This would allow the potency of it (raw slowing power) to be nerfed. Yup, that's where I was going with it. It's just way too strong as a single target ability but useless if it was a weaker single target ability. Making it AoE may just be what needs to be done.

#E

  • This is such a basic and good ability and somehow really iconic to him. I really don't think it should be touched.

#R

  • Remove the Things in Bold - "While Nasus is empowered, he deals magic damage to all enemies around him each second, capped at 240, and gains bonus attack damage equal to 6.375% of the damage dealt, up to a maximum of 300 bonus AD."
    • They both seem so unnecessary. One removes visible power while the other grants invisible power. Take both out and it'll just make more sense. Ofcourse, the % health damage would need to be looked at again.

great ideas, I would like the idea of his ult to be changed, as Nasus and Renekton have very similar ultimates. I fell that his W could also be changed, but I do like the idea of an ability that stacks.

It’s a shame because it really destroys his identity, but he really needs the infinite Q stacking removed to have better gameplay.

While I do see Susan as the only champion that can still win the game all by himself (assuming the enemy team lets him) I do agree that he needs some love. I think his whither needs an overhaul. I like his Q stacking although I'd like to see it be a bit more interactive. I like your idea of additional effects from other spells; something like a (healthy) cross between the way Urgot's abilities combo and the way Brand's abilities combo. In fact if he was given these additional effects his stacks could increase these effects as opposed to only increasing damage. This could open up his kit to a lot of interesting interactions and make me actually like this champion. XD

bravo sir, I was saying this awhile ago, and i'm glad an actual Nasus main can say it as well. Nasus as a character thematically is not only bad ass, but his style is unique. The problem is that with an infinite stacking mechanic they have to take away from other aspects of his kit. The wither is also the issue as you said as it is incredibly strong and doesnt allow him to have strength in other aspects of his kit. The E is good for extra damage and armor shred on Q...but by this point in the game it is now significantly outdated as a spell. it still works and it helps, but he could use something else. I also feel as weird as this sounds, you could take his passive and move it to something that scales with an ability as a passive. Like maybe as you level up Q his life steal increases up to a flat 10 or 15% or whatever it is on his current kit and then give him a real passive that is actually useful come late game where he shines.

the one thing I think though, is that if they do rework him...he would need to still be a scaling champion who has a godly late game but weak early game. he doesn't need early game buffs because from what I can tell, his early game is something good nasus players know how to play around.

Nasus was made in a time where league matches could end in under 10mins. This was his trade off. Every time they make the game matches longer it was a huge buff to nasus. They made towers tankier, nerfed FB gold, reduced snowballing/ganking from junglers(with jungle exclusive damage items) and countless other things to make matches go past the 30min mark. Also the new items are fantastic on nasus. He has been buffed indirectly really hard.

I used to hate on Nasus a lot, thinking he was broken and was a lategame rofl stomp. But the more I look at Riven, Darius, Morde and Garen. I start to slowly realize he was pretty balanced all along.

I'd like to see him have some farming milestones like GP does, you know, purchasable upgrades.

When you Q a minion you collect soul fragments which can be used to amp up his Q in some form or another.

Upgrades like -Q now does 1/2 the damage as an AoE effect around Nasus -Q now has a secondary counter which can stack up to 10(1 minions kill = one stack) When he casts his Spirit fire it unloads all the stacks as a dot on targets caught inside Dealing X amount of damage per stack. -Q Has no cooldown but only deals 1/4 of his damage. -Q Has double cooldown but deals 75% additional damage.

Only one of these upgrades is available for grabs.
