Riven is the paragon of what a pure melee carry should be

Apocalypsic··7 votes·639 views

She has the mobility and damage to get the job done while lacking what most other melee carries have stuffed into their kits, hybrid damage or free armor penetration.

She's fairly telegraphed and easy to counter build against on top of being incredibly squishy because her good scalings and horrid base damages actually force her to dedicate her itemization to primarily damage.

hybrid damage or free armor penetration.

Riven also scales incredibly well with CDR unlike most of them while having WAY WAY WAY more damage in AOE which means 2 things: 1: she doesn't need anti-tank steroid like true damage from gangplank, her lack of anti-tank steroid will be compensated by high damage. 2: building black cleaver+last whisper with her will be more effective

Yasuo can't build Black cleaver Same for Yi, he can but scales way better with other carry items

She's fairly telegraphed

who isn't? the only one that isn't telegraphed among melee carries is Yasuo because he can jump from 1300 range if an ally has a knock up

and easy to counter build against on top of

counterbuilding has nothing to do with this game, a lot of champions are impossible to build against and still balanced like Nasus counterplay is what matters

being incredibly squishy because her good scalings

unless rare abuses most melee carries are not tanky unless they're immobile like Darius

this is the only part where you're totally wrong Riven scales on her passive and Q from total AD, this makes her less Feast or Famin unlike MasterYi , this will make her relevant even behind which is not a bad thing because feast or famin is toxic af

TLDR: : Riven is a good design, but she's not the only good melee carry

if we take away board QQ Yasuo Riven Darius Gangplank Fiora are very good design in high elo, some of them might be overtuned and need some number nerfs. But overall , they have counterplay and they're not stat-checking because all of them have been updated

Tryndamere MasterYi Jax on the opposite, are still stat-checking offering little counterplay with no utility to their team unlike GP/fiora/riven/yasuo

I don't agree, in a sense, with YI. Considering he guy is almost unplayable in high elo for the most part because he has too much counterplay and not enough play options of his own besides hoping and trying his best to get fed. He is feast-and-famine tho.

his counterplay is a general counterplay appliable to everyone like ""cc him" or "kill him" his kit does not have an inhert mechanic that makes you able to outplay him like fiora's vital point/W skillshot or GP barrels or yasuo Q,

he's weak in high elo because he's garbage in early game both in lane and jungle and if his early game was strong he would be able to play the game with LESS counterplay than other champions. Which makes him in the end a "have more stats than him" champion called stat-checking champion

he needs a rework

He has interactive counterplay options, it's called fearing him during ulti, baiting his W, saving CC for him, delaying spells to bait Q and invading/ganking him early etc.

League is not meant to be designed and played like a fighting game where every single character can deal with and potentially beat every other character on the spot as long as you're good enough. ARTS/MOBA isn't made on that premise. A stat-checking champion has no reason to be reworked and "homogenised" (into today's more and more independent champion line-ups) just because they're team-dependent to shine or to be killed.

EDIT: why the downvotes. Do you think those precise and guaranteed counterplay options are worse than certain others whose only counterplay is to supposedly dodge their fast projectiles, ranged harasses or other spammy nonsense that are also coincidentally on low CDs and/or resource cost where landing is not a matter of skill but a matter of inevitability while receiving un-proportionally large amount of boosts for every landing with how little amount of risks most of those involve? What do you lot even define counterplay thesedays?

except it is meant, you can check any rioters if they said the opposite they were already fired If champions have no counterplay they end up the most reliable champions and are either overpowered or kept weak on purpose which is yi's case

Dota2 the king of melee carries have reworked all their melee carries into non-stack checking heroes and have all counterplay except those who were still not reworked AND ARE GARBAGE IN COMPETITION LIKE MORDRED because stat-checking=too much reliable=either overpowered or cannot be buffed because will end up overpowered

no comments, i'm repeating myself

fear counters anyone, anyone will die during the duration of a fear

You are not restricted to killing Yi when he's feared, you can force him to disengage because Yi is not slowed when on ulti and feared, which makes him running backwards at full speed, disengaging the fight entirely. You can use that to force a 4v5 or whatever advantages have you and leave Yi to somehow take on your entire team solo afterwards (which means he will die too). It's a guaranteed counterplay on him, much like how Silence is especially powerful against certain champs.

that's the only counterplay he has, but unfortunatly his W doesn't do damage so in the end he remains stat-checking

It isn't the only counterplay. The fact his only saving grace both self-restricts and can actually be counterplayed is a big deal in and of itself, as most champs won't have it that bad.

except it is meant, you can check any rioters if they said the opposite they were already fired If champions have no counterplay they end up the most reliable champions and are either overpowered or kept weak on purpose which is yi's case

When even the twitchest shooter games have countering happening, we as a variant of strategy game wants it to be entirely twitch-based, something is definitely wrong. There is nothing wrong to have a team game to be designed and balanced at team level.

Yi is not kept weak because he is too good of a deal, it's only like that because Yi has a thing for wrecking noobs who don't know the basics such as focusing, and Riot intentionally nerfs him because of it, and not because Yi was ever too good of a deal or too much of a problem to balance. Yi was only broken once, when AP Yi was still around, ever since then it has always been items fault that globally affects everybody rather than his own issues.

I don't play Dota2 so I can't comment much. But last time I checked, Dota2 is by design a game with 2 extremities, one being macro and the other being stat-check, and prides itself for having the extremes of those 2 aspects. But what do I know.

..................

Yi also has counterplay directly on his Alpha, due to how its CD is designed, it can not be used more than once in most of the fights, which forces him to withhold and use it critically or else get blown up. It forces him to put himself at severe disadvantage afterwards (especially in TF) if he uses as a fighting tool. And it's also intentionally over-budgeted so he will be over-reliant on it, but he can't use it much most of the time.

There is nothing wrong to have a carry to be balanced at the team level, I'm very certain that's how carries are meant to be balanced.

eh...

Riven's penchant for burst and her AoE aren't really things that are or should be representative of melee carries as a class.

Putting aside balance for a moment, Fiora is very clearly the most "pure" vision of what a melee carry is in this game. And as much as people might dislike it, her %hp true damage is a large part of it.

The only reason Riven works without tank killing steroids is because she has better backline access than Fiora or Yasuo, and the raw burst to do work when she gets there.

While I would never opose champions with abundence off animation canceling mechanics and endless skillcap

You have to keep in mind half of community doesnt have hands... etc

If every champion became more like riven League would become a better game If every champion became more like garen League would bankrupt...

They just made her animation canceling easier to do. So clearly Riot doesn't agree.

Poske3 votes

False they made her Animation canceling non rng based. You always cut the animation by the same ammount rather then by a random number in a small interval.

Also they made her more playable in servers such as yours where canceling with her was impossible if you had high ping and when I say impossible literaly non registered not possible
