Some issues with Varus

In this topic i'll avoid his Q and R as they are his strongest and more impactful abilities.

First off he needs a better passive and W, his e is pathetic as well and none of them make a good job in fulfilling his intended fantasy. i'll try to explain their issues below.

If he's supposed to be an ADcarry then his passive is a sorry excuse for an steroid, lacking both reliability and power. And if he's mean to be a mid laner poke based champion then his passive completely misses the mark.

If he is meant to be an ADcarry his W needs to be useful besides procing the stacks. And if he's meant to be a mid laner then his W is completely out of place because the ability is useless if your abilities are on cooldown (which they are meant to be as a mid laner)

His E problem is that it sucks in both damage and utility. It's only redeeming factor it's the griveous wounds but the slow, damage and cooldown are all pathetic. Tbh i'd be completely okay if you removed the damage from this ability and gave it grounded debuff (kinda makes sense since a rain of arrows would pin down enemies) to solidify his role as lockdown disengage poke champion. this ability overall feels incredibly weak and it usually feels like it doesn't matter if you use it or not.

If Varus is supposed to be like Lucian and Ezreal then he is too mana hungry and his cooldowns are too long. Essence Reaver also barely helps his mana sustain. As an ADC his itemization options feel awkward and rely on a feast or famine playstle to work. And as AD mage (tear build) half of his kit goes to waste.

If Varus is meant to go bot lane and compete against the likes of Lucian, Jinx Ashe, Twitch then he needs to be shifted towards that role and that role only. And if he's meant to go mid and be a poke AD mage then he needs to be shifted towards that role. It'd be really coold if Varus could excel at both roles and fill different roles in many team comps but it isn't possible. At the moment Varus sucks at both and feels incomplete, and he's been a weak champion for far too long that has been relying on a feast or famine playstyle.

Varus could easily be put into a healthy spot with a little of thought and interest from the balance team but this post is problably going to be ignored like 99% of the actual balance discussions in these forums.

He also brings a lot of utility with his R

I'm not saying he doesn't have issues but each champion has a power budget, a lot of varus power budget is in his Q and R, arguably to much of it to the point his W and E feel overly weak

He's fine, he's a very strong pick in competitive because his kit is so strong. L2p.

This is correct. And holy shit I haven't seen that name since the old GD

Being a Q bot and very strong are completely different things.

Meh. When the q can snipe for like 30-40% of your opponents health, things could be worse. Varus really should have some power taken out of his q and distributed throughout his kit tthough. I think overall his power budget is alright but its just too concentrated. Hail of arrows feels so unsatisfying, and that passive feels even more so. Compare varus passive to get excited, worlds apart in terms of satisfaction despite being triggered off similar circumstances.

That's exactly what i mean, it isn't healthy for a champion to be so one dimensional.

Except he's picked for his strong area denial+control in E and R and his ability to kill tanks with W. L2p.

He's an extremely outdated champion. I use him if my team has around 1-3 tanky front lines that give a ton of cc to protect me. He should get a sub-par rework that reworks his passive and his E.

yeah I have to agree that his passive is very lackluster, though moving blighted quiver as a real passive would mean that its damage will get a small nerf because it wouldn't be gated anymore.

His E does suck, specially because its cast time, how are you supposed to slow enemies if you slow yourself x_X?

He's not supposed to be like Ezreal and Lucian though, these two champions main concept is mobility, Varus' is long range poke and utility.

I do think it's possible to balance a champion for both mid and bot though, you can see it on Ezreal, Corki and even Quinn.

His W is fine I believe. It allows him to go AP which is very strong against certain team comps and is a lot more fun to play subjectively. I would say his E is a little under powered and his passive could be changed a bit.
